Chapter 4 - The Missing Baby FileWe called the police.

By midnight, the house was full of uniforms, flashing lights, and questions.
My mother sat on the sofa pretending to be devastated.
Claire refused to speak to anyone except me.
Evelyn sat in the bedroom with one hand on her stomach.
The baby kept moving.
Every kick felt like a warning.
One detective, Daniel Reeves, examined the stolen-note situation.
“Anything else missing?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He looked at Evelyn.
“Any enemies?”
My mother answered for her.
“She has plenty.”
I stared at my mother.
Detective Reeves noticed.
“You two should probably stop talking to each other.”
My mother glared at him.
Hours passed.
The police found no footprints.
No forced entry.
No usable fingerprints.
Whoever entered the house knew exactly where everything was.
They also knew exactly what they wanted.
The phone.
The note.
Nothing else.
At three in the morning, Claire handed me another document.
“You need to see this before your mother gets rid of it.”
It was an old clinic record.
Patient:
Evelyn Hart.
Pregnancy:
Twenty-eight weeks.
Outcome:
Live birth.
I stared.
“Live birth?”
Claire nodded.
“That is why I came.”
I turned toward Evelyn.
She looked like she was about to collapse.
“You gave birth?”
She nodded.
“Three years ago.”
“And the child?”
“I never saw him.”
My throat tightened.
“Him?”
She nodded.
“A boy.”
Then Claire said the sentence that shattered everything.
“You have a son.”
I stared at Evelyn.
“You told me we lost the baby.”
“I was told he died.”
“Who told you?”
“Dr. Hale.”
Claire shook her head.
“He never died.”
The room went silent.
My mother stood suddenly.
“That’s enough.”
Detective Reeves looked at her.
“You knew?”
She said nothing.
“Mrs. Voss?”
My mother sat back down.
Claire opened a photograph.
A baby.
Newborn.
Wrapped in a blue blanket.
The date matched Evelyn’s delivery.
But what mattered was the bracelet.
The same one my mother had shown me.
Mercer.
I looked at the back.
There was another name.
NOAH.
My heart stopped.
“His name was Noah?”
Evelyn nodded through tears.
“I called him Noah.”
I looked at Claire.
“Where is he now?”
She hesitated.
“We don't know.”
“What do you mean?”
“He was placed in temporary custody.”
“By who?”
“Your mother.”
I turned.
My mother shook her head.
“I was following instructions.”
“Whose instructions?”
She said nothing.
I stepped toward her.
“Whose?”
Her voice finally broke.
“Your father’s.”
My blood went cold.
“My father died twelve years ago.”
“He left orders.”
“That makes no sense.”
“He knew this would happen.”
“What would happen?”
She looked at me.
“That you would marry Evelyn.”
Silence.
My mother whispered:
“He never trusted her family.”
Claire suddenly stood.
“That’s not true.”
My mother looked at her.
“You know what your brother did.”
Claire’s face changed.
I looked between them.
“What brother?”
Nobody answered.
Then Detective Reeves walked into the room holding a report.
“We found something.”
He placed a photograph on the table.
A security image from the clinic.
A man leaving the building with a newborn baby.
His face was partially hidden.
But the timestamp was clear.
Three years ago.
One hour after Evelyn gave birth.
May you like
And on his wrist was a watch I recognized immediately.
My father had owned that exact watch.
