CHAPTER 15: THE CHOICE

“DAD!”
The scream came from beneath the house.
Then another voice answered.
My voice.
“Don't come down.”
I stood frozen in the darkness.
There were two voices.
One belonged to Isabella.
The other belonged to me.
But I was standing upstairs.
So who was speaking from below?
My father whispered:
“It's the memory.”
I turned toward him.
“What memory?”
“The version of you they created.”
I stared at the basement door.
“Then my daughter is trapped with it.”
“Yes.”
“Open the door.”
“I can't.”
“OPEN IT!”
My father shook his head.
“If you enter, the system will recognize you.”
“Good.”
“It will connect you to every memory they've stored.”
“Then let it.”
“You may never come back.”
I didn't care.
My daughter was down there.
That was enough.
I stepped toward the basement.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Wait.”
I pulled away.
“No.”
“Listen.”
“I've listened to lies for twenty years.”
“This isn't a lie.”
He looked terrified.
“The system doesn't want Isabella.”
“What does it want?”
“You.”
I stopped.
“What?”
“The first Isabella isn't the target.”
“The second Isabella isn't the target.”
“You are.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because you built the original architecture.”
“I don't remember.”
“You don't need to.”
Daniel pointed toward my head.
“The system remembers for you.”
The basement door suddenly opened.
A white light poured upward.
Then I heard my daughter's voice.
“Dad…”
I stepped forward.
This time, I didn't hesitate.
I walked downstairs.
The others followed.
At the bottom was a room I'd never seen.
Except somehow...
I remembered it.
A massive circular chamber.
Hundreds of monitors covered the walls.
In the center stood two glass chambers.
Inside one was Isabella.
Inside the other was the first girl.
Both were unconscious.
Between them stood a machine.
A thin beam of light connected the two chambers.
I looked around.
“My God.”
Daniel whispered:
“This is where it started.”
I walked toward the machine.
A screen activated.
My own face appeared.
But older.
Twenty years older.
It was me.
The real me.
Not a recording created by Black Meridian.
Me.
I looked into the camera.
“If you're watching this, you've finally returned.”
I stepped closer.
The recording continued.
“I know you won't remember making this.”
I swallowed.
“I know they erased the memories.”
“But I left one thing behind.”
The screen showed a small metal box.
Then my mother's face appeared.
She was younger.
She was crying.
“Your mother helped me hide the final key.”
The screen changed.
A DNA sequence appeared.
Then a photograph of Isabella.
Then Daniel.
Then me.
The final image showed the first Isabella.
My voice continued:
“The system cannot be destroyed from outside.”
I looked at the two girls.
“It can only be destroyed by the person who created it.”
Daniel whispered:
“You.”
I nodded.
The recording continued.
“But there is a price.”
My heart tightened.
“To erase the system, you must erase the memories that created it.”
I understood.
“My memories.”
“Yes.”
“All of them?”
“Yes.”
The screen showed my childhood.
My mother.
Daniel.
Elena.
Isabella.
Everything.
The recording continued:
“If you destroy the archive, you will lose every memory connected to Black Meridian.”
I looked at the girls.
“That includes them.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
My voice on the screen continued:
“Not their existence.”
I froze.
“Their memories of you.”
My chest tightened.
“If you activate the final sequence, Isabella will survive.”
I stared.
“But she will forget me.”
The recording paused.
Then my mother's face appeared.
“No.”
I turned toward the screen.
Her voice trembled.
“She won't forget you.”
“She will forget what happened here.”
I stared.
“The system can separate traumatic memories from emotional memory.”
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
“She will still know you are her father.”
I felt hope for the first time.
Then she added:
“But the first Isabella…”
The screen went black.
I looked toward the glass chamber.
The first girl was awake.
She was watching me.
Her lips moved.
“Dad.”
I walked toward her.
She placed her hand against the glass.
“You came back.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“I did.”
“I knew you would.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“You left me.”
“I didn't know.”
“I know.”
She smiled.
“You always came back.”
I touched the glass.
“I'm sorry.”
She shook her head.
“You saved me.”
“I did?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“You made the second me.”
I froze.
“What?”
She smiled.
“I was dying.”
“My memories were breaking apart.”
“So you created another body.”
“I created her?”
“You gave me another chance.”
I looked toward Isabella.
“So she's you?”
“She is me.”
Then she smiled.
“And I am her.”
I didn't understand.
The first girl continued:
“We were never supposed to be two.”
“Then what happens?”
“We become one.”
My heart stopped.
“No.”
She smiled sadly.
“Dad.”
“No.”
“She'll survive.”
“And you?”
She looked at Isabella.
“She'll carry me.”
I shook my head.
“There has to be another way.”
“There isn't.”
I turned toward the machine.
“There has to be.”
Daniel stepped beside me.
“There isn't.”
I looked at him.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I knew you'd refuse.”
“I do refuse.”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“You always did.”
The machine began powering up.
Red lights appeared.
FINAL SEQUENCE AVAILABLE
I looked toward the control panel.
There were two buttons.
PRESERVE SYSTEM
ERASE SYSTEM
I reached for the second.
My grandfather's voice suddenly filled the chamber.
“Don't.”
I turned.
He stood on the upper balcony.
Blood covered his shirt.
But he was smiling.
“You don't understand what you're destroying.”
I looked up.
“I'm destroying you.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You're destroying humanity's greatest achievement.”
“Blackmail?”
“Control.”
“Same thing.”
He laughed.
“You think people want freedom?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
He spread his arms.
“People want someone else to make their choices.”
I looked at Isabella.
“No.”
He smiled.
“You're wrong.”
He pressed a button.
The glass chambers began filling with gas.
Isabella woke up.
“Dad!”
I ran to the controls.
The first girl screamed.
“NOW!”
I slammed my hand onto:
ERASE SYSTEM
Nothing happened.
The screen demanded confirmation.
THIS ACTION CANNOT BE UNDONE.
I pressed it.
The system rejected me.
IDENTITY CONFLICT.
I looked at the screen.
“What?”
Daniel shouted:
“You need both keys!”
“The first key is your father!”
My father stepped forward.
“And the second?”
Daniel looked at himself.
“Me.”
He placed his hand against the scanner.
Nothing.
Then he looked at me.
“You need to remember.”
“Remember what?”
“The beginning.”
My head exploded with memories.
The laboratory.
My mother.
Daniel.
Our father.
The first Isabella.
The machine.
Then I remembered.
I had built the system.
But not to control people.
I had built it to preserve memories.
To save my mother's mind.
Our father corrupted it.
Black Meridian was born from my invention.
I remembered the moment I realized what he'd done.
I remembered trying to destroy it.
I remembered creating Isabella's second body.
I remembered giving her my memories.
I remembered telling the first Isabella:
“Someday, I'll come back.”
She had believed me.
For twenty years.
I looked at her.
“I remember.”
The scanner activated.
My hand went onto it.
The machine screamed.
Every monitor exploded with light.
My grandfather shouted:
“NO!”
The archive began deleting.
One file.
Then another.
Then thousands.
Millions.
Faces disappeared.
Names vanished.
The servers burned out.
The glass chambers opened.
Isabella fell into my arms.
The first girl collapsed beside us.
I caught her too.
She looked at Isabella.
Then smiled.
“It's okay.”
“What?”
“You found us.”
Her eyes closed.
The light around her began fading.
I held her tightly.
“Don't leave.”
She whispered:
“I won't.”
Then she touched Isabella's forehead.
The two girls' hands connected.
A bright white light filled the room.
I couldn't see anything.
Then silence.
When I opened my eyes, only one girl was lying in my arms.
Isabella.
Alive.
Breathing.
I held her.
“Sweetheart?”
Her eyes opened.
She looked at me.
“Dad?”
I started crying.
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Why are you crying?”
I laughed through the tears.
“Because I missed you.”
She looked around.
“Where are we?”
I held her tighter.
“Home.”
Behind us, the servers went dark.
My grandfather was gone.
My father stood silently near the entrance.
Daniel was beside him.
Elena was crying.
Beatriz was kneeling on the floor.
The Black Meridian archive was gone.
Every secret.
Every stolen memory.
Every weapon they had built.
Destroyed.
But something had changed.
Isabella looked at me.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“I had a dream.”
“What dream?”
She frowned.
“I was with another little girl.”
My heart stopped.
“What did she look like?”
“She looked like me.”
I smiled sadly.
“What happened to her?”
Isabella thought for a moment.
“She said she loved me.”
I closed my eyes.
“She did.”
“How do you know?”
I kissed my daughter's forehead.
“Because I remember.”
She smiled.
Then she hugged me.
For the first time in eight years, I knew exactly who my daughter was.
Not a subject.
Not a key.
Not a system.
Just Isabella.
My little girl.
And as we walked out of the house together, the first sunlight of morning entered through the broken windows.
Behind us, beneath the floor, the final server went dark.
But on the last surviving monitor, one line remained.
BLACK MERIDIAN: TERMINATED.
Then another appeared.
SUBJECT ZERO: LOCATION UNKNOWN.
I stopped walking.
My father saw it too.
He looked at me.
I looked at him.
Neither of us spoke.
Because we both understood the same terrifying truth.
My mother had never been inside the vault.
And if Subject Zero was still alive...
Then somewhere in the world, she was waiting.
Not for Isabella.
May you like
Not for Daniel.
For me.
