Chapter 5 - The Name Under the NameI couldn't sleep.

Eleanor Whitaker.

The name was unfamiliar.

Yet it felt like a piece of a puzzle I had been staring at for years.

Megan spent the night searching public records.

By morning, she had found a newspaper clipping.

A house fire.

Two women missing.

One child missing.

The names were Eleanor Whitaker and her infant son.

My hands went cold.

“Evan survived,” Megan said.

I read the article again.

Eleanor was presumed dead.

The child was presumed dead.

But there was no body.

“No.”

Megan nodded.

“His official birth certificate was issued ten years later.”

“Under what name?”

“Evan Mercer.”

Mercer.

Lauren's last name.

I looked at her.

She stared at the floor.

“We were never just husband and wife,” she said.

“What were you?”

“We were connected through our families.”

She explained that Eleanor had been involved in a financial network that moved stolen assets through shell companies.

When the operation collapsed, several people vanished.

Eleanor disappeared.

Evan was raised by Judith, who claimed to be his aunt.

I felt dizzy.

“Judith wasn't his mother.”

“No.”

“She lied to everyone.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Lauren's answer was quiet.

“Because she needed Evan.”

“For what?”

“Eleanor left something behind.”

“What?”

“A ledger.”

Megan leaned forward.

“What kind of ledger?”

“Names. Accounts. Payments. Politicians. Judges. Police officers.”

My stomach tightened.

“And Evan found it?”

“Years ago.”

“Then the fake death…”

Lauren nodded.

“Wasn't about insurance.”

“Then what?”

“He wanted to disappear before the ledger came to light.”

I stood.

“So why involve me?”

Lauren looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Because Evan believed you had it.”

“I don't.”

“You do.”

I shook my head.

“I've never seen any ledger.”

Lauren opened her bag.

She pulled out an old photograph from our wedding.

I recognized it instantly.

Our wedding reception.

I was laughing.

Evan stood behind me.

Judith was holding a champagne glass.

Lauren zoomed in on the image.

“Look at your necklace.”

I touched my throat.

The necklace.

A simple gold pendant Evan had given me on our first anniversary.

I had worn it for twenty years.

Lauren said softly:

“The ledger was hidden inside it.”

I stared at her.

“No.”

“Evan was supposed to take it the night he died.”

My hands began to shake.

“Then why didn't he?”

“Because he couldn't find it.”

I ripped open my purse.

The pendant was gone.

I had worn it that morning.

Now the chain was broken.

Megan looked at me.

“Someone took it.”

A sound came from outside the motel room.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Three knocks.

Nobody moved.

Then a voice came through the door.

Evan.

“Caroline.”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“I know you're in there.”

Lauren began crying.

Megan reached for her weapon.

Evan spoke again.

“Open the door.”

I stared at the handle.

Then he said the one thing that made my blood freeze.

“Your necklace isn't missing.”

May you like

A pause.

“I have it.”
