CHAPTER 11 THE WOMAN BEHIND THE VAULT

“Nathan…”
The voice came from inside the vault.
Not from a speaker.
Not from a recording.
From somewhere in the darkness beyond the massive steel door.
Grace stopped breathing.
Richard's face turned completely white.
Even Thomas looked shaken.
Alexander whispered:
“No.”
The vault door opened another inch.
A woman's hand appeared around the edge.
Thin.
Pale.
Trembling.
Then she stepped into the emergency light.
Grace covered her mouth.
Nathan's mother was alive.
Older than the woman in the photographs, of course.
Her hair was streaked with silver.
There were deep scars along the side of her neck.
One eye was slightly swollen.
But there was no mistaking her.
Eleanor Cole.
Nathan's mother.
The woman everyone had mourned for twenty years.
The woman whose funeral Nathan had attended as a twelve-year-old boy.
The woman whose grave he had visited every year.
She looked toward the cameras.
Then whispered:
“Nathan.”
Grace's knees nearly gave way.
Lily looked at her.
“Mommy, who is that?”
Grace couldn't answer.
Eleanor looked directly at Lily.
And tears filled her eyes.
“My granddaughter.”
Thomas stepped backward.
“This wasn't supposed to happen.”
Eleanor turned toward him.
“You should know by now.”
Her voice was weak.
“But nothing ever goes according to Alexander's plan.”
Alexander suddenly raised his weapon.
“Enough.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“You're still carrying that?”
Alexander's hand trembled.
“You should have died.”
Eleanor smiled sadly.
“I almost did.”
Nathan's voice suddenly came through the speakers.
“Mom?”
Eleanor looked up.
“Nathan.”
The word carried twenty years of pain.
Nathan's voice cracked.
“Where are you?”
“Inside the vault.”
“I'm coming.”
“No.”
“Mom, I'm coming.”
“Listen to me.”
Her voice became urgent.
“You don't have much time.”
Nathan stared at the camera.
“Time for what?”
Eleanor looked toward the children.
“For them.”
The screen flickered.
A timer appeared.
00:17:42
Grace stared.
“What is that?”
Eleanor answered:
“The vault's self-destruct sequence.”
Nathan's voice became sharp.
“You're telling me the vault is going to explode?”
“No.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“Worse.”
She looked toward Alexander.
“He built a system that will erase every record if the vault is breached.”
Nathan understood.
“All the evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Then we need to copy it.”
“Already done.”
Nathan froze.
“What?”
Eleanor held up a small black device.
“I sent the files to someone outside the family.”
Thomas suddenly moved.
“Who?”
Eleanor smiled.
“That is what you're afraid of, isn't it?”
Thomas stared at her.
“Who has the files?”
Eleanor said nothing.
Alexander shouted:
“Kill her!”
The guards raised their weapons.
Nathan's voice thundered through the speakers.
“Don't!”
Every gun suddenly locked.
The soldiers stared at their weapons.
Nathan had taken control of the security system.
He spoke again.
“Anyone who fires loses their access.”
Thomas looked toward the ceiling.
“You think you've won?”
Nathan answered:
“No.”
A pause.
“Not yet.”
Grace stepped toward the vault.
“Nathan, how do we get inside?”
A panel beside the door suddenly opened.
Three biometric scanners appeared.
Emma.
Daniel.
Lily.
Grace stared.
“They're the keys.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
Nathan's voice softened.
“Mom, what happens if they open it?”
Eleanor looked at the three children.
“They'll see what this family buried.”
Grace brought Lily forward.
But Lily stopped.
She was staring at Eleanor.
“Are you Daddy's mommy?”
Eleanor smiled.
“Yes.”
Lily's eyes widened.
“Why were you hiding?”
Eleanor's expression broke.
“Because bad people wanted to hurt your daddy.”
Lily looked toward Nathan's camera.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Is she really your mommy?”
Nathan swallowed.
“Yes.”
Lily thought for a moment.
Then she smiled.
“Then she's my grandma.”
Eleanor began crying.
“Yes.”
She knelt.
“I'm your grandma.”
Lily stepped forward.
Grace held her hand.
Together, they approached the first scanner.
Emma followed.
Then Daniel.
The three children placed their palms against the glass.
The scanners lit up.
FIRST HEIR CONFIRMED.
SECOND HEIR CONFIRMED.
The third scanner flashed.
NATURAL HEIR DETECTED.
The vault door shook.
Then the entire mansion trembled.
Alexander staggered.
“No.”
Richard looked at him.
“You're afraid.”
Alexander glared.
“You don't know what is inside.”
Richard stepped closer.
“I know enough.”
Alexander raised his gun.
Richard didn't move.
“You spent decades destroying people to protect this family.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“And you helped me.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
His voice broke.
“I did.”
Then Richard stepped between Alexander and the children.
“But I'm done.”
Alexander fired.
The gunshot echoed.
Richard fell.
“NATHAN!”
Grace screamed.
Nathan's voice exploded through the speakers.
“DAD!”
Richard hit the floor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Alexander turned toward the guards.
“Get the children!”
But before anyone could move, Thomas grabbed Alexander's arm.
“Stop.”
Alexander stared at him.
“What are you doing?”
Thomas whispered:
“You're going to kill the only people who can open the vault.”
Alexander looked at the three children.
The scanners were glowing brighter.
The vault door began opening.
Nathan's voice came through.
“Thomas.”
Thomas looked toward the camera.
“I'm listening.”
“You want the files.”
Thomas nodded.
“I do.”
“Then help my family.”
Thomas hesitated.
“You think I'll betray Alexander?”
Nathan answered:
“You already did.”
Thomas stared.
Nathan continued:
“You've been waiting twenty years for someone to expose him.”
Silence.
Thomas looked at Alexander.
Then at Richard lying wounded on the floor.
Finally, Thomas lowered his weapon.
“Stand down.”
The guards hesitated.
“NOW!”
They lowered their guns.
Alexander stared at his son.
“You ungrateful bastard.”
Thomas looked at him.
“No.”
His voice was cold.
“I finally became my own man.”
Alexander raised his weapon.
Thomas shot first.
Alexander's gun flew from his hand.
He fell to his knees.
Nathan's voice came through the speakers.
“Thomas.”
“Yes?”
“Where is Edward?”
Thomas froze.
Grace looked at him.
“You know where he is.”
Thomas slowly nodded.
“He's alive.”
Nathan's voice became urgent.
“Where?”
Thomas looked toward Eleanor.
She answered:
“Not far.”
Nathan frowned.
“Where?”
Eleanor pointed toward a hidden door inside the vault.
“Behind that.”
The door opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Bearded.
Wounded.
But alive.
Grace gasped.
“Edward.”
Edward Vale looked at Nathan.
Then at Lily.
Then smiled faintly.
“You took your time.”
Nathan stared at him.
“You knew?”
Edward nodded.
“Everything.”
Nathan's voice hardened.
“Then tell me the truth.”
Edward looked toward Eleanor.
She nodded.
Edward took a deep breath.
“Lily is your daughter.”
Nathan froze.
“But the DNA…”
“Was altered.”
Nathan stared.
“By whom?”
Edward looked toward Richard.
Richard, bleeding on the floor, whispered:
“Me.”
Nathan's face went blank.
Richard continued.
“I changed the records.”
Grace stared.
“Why?”
Richard looked at Lily.
“Because if the family discovered Lily was Nathan's natural heir…”
He struggled to breathe.
“They would never stop hunting her.”
Nathan stepped toward him.
“You changed the DNA records?”
Richard nodded.
“I made everyone believe she wasn't yours.”
Nathan's eyes filled with tears.
“You let me believe…”
“I know.”
“You let Grace believe…”
“I know.”
Nathan looked at Lily.
Then at Grace.
Five years of pain.
Five years of lies.
And finally, the truth.
Lily was his.
Edward suddenly looked toward the timer.
00:04:31.
“We need to leave.”
Nathan turned.
“What?”
Edward pointed toward the vault.
“The files are safe.”
He looked at Eleanor.
“But the self-destruct isn't.”
Grace grabbed Lily.
“Then let's go.”
Nathan helped Richard stand.
Thomas grabbed Alexander.
Emma and Daniel stayed beside Eleanor.
They ran toward the exit.
But just before Nathan reached the door, Eleanor stopped.
She looked back into the vault.
Nathan turned.
“Mom?”
Eleanor's face had changed.
She looked terrified.
“What?”
She whispered:
“There is one file I never wanted you to find.”
Nathan stared.
“What file?”
Eleanor pointed toward the deepest part of the vault.
A single red folder remained on the floor.
Across its cover were three words:
NATHAN'S REAL BIRTH.
Nathan froze.
His mother grabbed his arm.
“Don't open it.”
Nathan stared at her.
“Why?”
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
“Because if you do…”
She swallowed.
“…you'll discover who your father really is.”
Behind them, the vault alarm screamed.
May you like
00:03:59.
And Nathan slowly turned toward the red folder.
