Chapter 15: The Last Secret Beneath Bennett Mansion

The first explosion threw Ethan against the tunnel wall.

“Run!”

Alexander grabbed him by the shoulder.

Ethan immediately pulled away.

“Where’s Sophie?”

“Behind you!”

Ethan turned.

Sophie was crouched beside his mother, terrified but unharmed.

He rushed toward her.

“Come here.”

She jumped into his arms.

Another explosion shook the tunnel.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

His mother shouted,

“The east tunnel! Now!”

They ran.

Behind them, fire raced through the underground passage.

Michael's voice echoed through the speakers.

“Twenty-six years.”

Ethan looked back.

“Michael!”

“You've spent your entire life searching for answers.”

The walls trembled.

“And now you're finally going to get them.”

Alexander shouted,

“Don't listen!”

Michael laughed.

“Why not?”

The tunnel shook again.

“Because your father knows what happened.”

Ethan stopped.

“My father?”

Alexander grabbed him.

“Keep moving.”

“Which father?”

Alexander didn't answer.

Ethan turned toward him.

“Which one?”

Alexander looked at Sophie.

Then at Ethan.

“Samuel.”

Ethan froze.

“What happened to him?”

“He made a deal with Michael.”

“What deal?”

Alexander hesitated.

“Your life.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“What?”

“Samuel agreed to disappear if Michael promised to keep you alive.”

Ethan stared.

“And he believed him?”

“He had no choice.”

“You all keep saying that.”

Alexander looked away.

“You're right.”

Ethan tightened his grip around Sophie.

“What happened to Samuel?”

Alexander's face darkened.

“He's beneath the mansion.”

Ethan frowned.

“What?”

“Michael never intended to let him leave.”

A deafening explosion interrupted them.

The tunnel behind them collapsed.

The way back disappeared.

Ethan looked at Alexander.

“Then we find him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because we need to get Sophie out first.”

Ethan shook his head.

“I'm not leaving anyone behind.”

His mother grabbed his arm.

“Ethan.”

He looked at her.

She was crying.

“There is something you need to know.”

“What?”

She took a deep breath.

“The fire isn't destroying Black Meridian.”

Ethan stared.

“Then what is Michael destroying?”

“The mansion.”

“Why?”

“Because the mansion is the key.”

“To what?”

She looked toward the floor.

“The original archive.”

Ethan remembered.

The room beneath his childhood bedroom.

His mother had told him the real archive was hidden there.

“The archive.”

She nodded.

“Michael wants to destroy it before you find it.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“He's already too late.”

Ethan looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Alexander pulled the blue key from his pocket.

“The archive has already been opened.”

Ethan froze.

“By who?”

Alexander looked at Sophie.

“Her.”

Sophie stared at him.

“I didn't do anything.”

“You did.”

Alexander knelt.

“You opened it when you were born.”

Ethan frowned.

“How?”

“She carries the genetic signature.”

“The human key.”

Alexander nodded.

“Exactly.”

Ethan looked at his daughter.

Sophie didn't understand.

She was only four.

Yet somehow, every secret in the Bennett family seemed to orbit around her.

Another explosion.

The floor cracked.

Alexander pointed toward the stairs.

“We have three minutes.”

“Until what?”

“The entire mansion collapses.”

They climbed.

One floor.

Then another.

Smoke filled the staircase.

Vanessa carried Emily.

Ethan carried Sophie.

His mother followed.

Finally, they reached the east wing.

Ethan's old bedroom stood at the end of the hallway.

The door was burning.

He kicked it open.

Inside, everything was exactly as he remembered.

The bed.

The old desk.

The faded photographs.

The wooden toy chest.

For a moment, Ethan was eight years old again.

Then Sophie pointed toward the wall.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

“There.”

A faint blue light glowed beneath the floor.

Ethan moved the rug.

There was a symbol.

The same symbol from the key.

Alexander inserted the blue key.

Nothing happened.

Ethan looked at Sophie.

“Try touching it.”

She hesitated.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

Sophie placed her tiny hand against the symbol.

The floor unlocked.

A hidden staircase opened.

Everyone stared.

Ethan carried Sophie down.

The room beneath them was enormous.

Unlike the other archives, this one wasn't filled with documents.

It contained one object.

A black metal table.

And on it...

a small wooden box.

Ethan approached.

His mother whispered,

“Don't open it.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because once you do, there is no going back.”

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

His mother.

Samuel.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Victor.

Thomas.

Michael.

All standing together.

But there was one more person.

A young woman Ethan didn't recognize.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

JUNE 17, 2000

And underneath:

THE DAY EDEN BEGAN.

Ethan turned toward his mother.

“Who is she?”

His mother stared at the photograph.

Her face collapsed.

“Your aunt.”

Ethan frowned.

“I don't have an aunt.”

“You did.”

“What happened to her?”

“She died.”

“How?”

His mother didn't answer.

Ethan looked at Alexander.

“Tell me.”

Alexander sighed.

“She was the first person to discover the truth about Black Meridian.”

“What truth?”

“That the organization wasn't created by Jonathan.”

Ethan froze.

“Then who created it?”

Alexander looked at the photograph.

“Her.”

Ethan stared.

“Your aunt?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To stop Jonathan.”

“From doing what?”

Alexander's voice became quiet.

“Creating Project Eden.”

Ethan looked around the room.

“So everything began with her.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did everyone blame my mother?”

“Because your aunt left one final instruction.”

“What?”

Alexander pointed toward the wooden box.

“Destroy Eden.”

Ethan looked inside again.

There was a second item.

A cassette.

He pressed play.

A woman's voice filled the room.

“If you're hearing this, the program has survived.”

Ethan listened.

“My name is Clara Bennett.”

He stared.

“Ethan, you don't know me.”

His mother began crying.

“But you were born because of my mistake.”

Ethan's breathing stopped.

Clara continued.

“Your father was never meant to be part of Eden.”

Ethan looked at Alexander.

“Then who was?”

“Michael.”

The recording continued.

“Michael volunteered himself as the genetic template.”

Ethan's eyes widened.

“He believed he could create a bloodline capable of controlling Black Meridian.”

His mother whispered,

“No…”

Clara continued.

“But Michael was not the first.”

A pause.

“The first successful subject was Samuel.”

Ethan froze.

“Samuel was born with the genetic markers.”

The room fell silent.

“Michael became obsessed with reproducing them.”

Ethan looked at Sophie.

Clara's voice continued.

“That is why Ethan was born.”

Ethan's heart pounded.

“He was created to continue the bloodline.”

His mother stepped backward.

“No.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Mom…”

“I didn't know.”

“You knew enough.”

“I swear, I didn't.”

The recording continued.

“But something went wrong.”

Ethan held his breath.

“Ethan developed an ability none of us predicted.”

“What ability?” Ethan whispered.

The tape crackled.

“Memory inheritance.”

Ethan froze.

Clara continued.

“He can access memories that do not belong to him.”

Ethan suddenly remembered the laboratory.

The white room.

The needle.

Sophie.

Everything.

It wasn't a dream.

They were memories.

Memories passed through his bloodline.

Clara continued.

“And when his daughter was born…”

The tape went silent for several seconds.

Then:

“Eden became complete.”

Ethan looked at Sophie.

His daughter stared back.

A soft blue glow appeared beneath her eyes.

Ethan stepped backward.

“What is happening?”

Alexander whispered,

“She's accessing the archive.”

Sophie suddenly spoke.

But her voice sounded different.

Older.

Calmer.

“Daddy.”

Ethan knelt.

“I'm here.”

She looked at him.

“I remember.”

“Remember what?”

“The room.”

“What room?”

“The first room.”

Ethan's blood ran cold.

“What did you see?”

Sophie pointed toward the wall.

“The man.”

“What man?”

“The one who made me.”

Ethan turned.

A hidden panel opened.

Behind it was a video screen.

The screen activated.

A young Michael appeared.

But he wasn't alone.

Beside him stood a woman.

Ethan's mother.

And between them was a baby.

Sophie.

Ethan stared.

The footage was dated four years earlier.

The day Sophie was born.

Michael looked into the camera.

“Project Eden is complete.”

Ethan's mother in the recording was crying.

“You promised me you wouldn't.”

Michael smiled.

“You should never have trusted me.”

The video changed.

Another room.

Ethan was standing beside Sophie.

But he was younger.

Confused.

A doctor was speaking.

“We need the father's consent.”

Michael answered:

“He already gave it.”

Ethan's blood froze.

“No.”

The doctor looked toward the camera.

“Mr. Bennett?”

Ethan heard his own younger voice.

“Yes.”

Michael smiled.

“Begin.”

The screen went black.

Ethan staggered backward.

His mother rushed toward him.

“Ethan.”

He pushed her away.

“You used me.”

“I didn't know.”

“You signed the consent.”

“I thought it was for medical treatment.”

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“You let them experiment on me.”

“I tried to stop them.”

“You failed.”

She began crying.

“I know.”

Ethan turned toward Sophie.

She was trembling.

He knelt and held her.

“No one is ever going to touch you again.”

Suddenly, the mansion shook violently.

Michael's voice came through the speakers.

“Time's up.”

The ceiling cracked.

Fire poured through the upper floor.

Then Michael appeared at the entrance.

He was holding a detonator.

Behind him stood Victor.

Thomas.

And a dozen armed men.

Michael smiled.

“Give me Sophie.”

Ethan stood.

“No.”

Michael looked at the child.

“She belongs to Eden.”

“She belongs to me.”

Michael laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He pointed at Ethan.

“You were never the key.”

Then he pointed at Sophie.

“She is.”

Victor stepped forward.

“Hand her over.”

Ethan raised his weapon.

“Come get her.”

Michael's smile disappeared.

“Very well.”

He pressed the detonator.

Nothing happened.

Michael looked down.

Pressed it again.

Nothing.

His face changed.

“What?”

Victor checked his device.

“No signal.”

Michael looked toward Sophie.

She was staring at him.

A strange blue light glowed beneath her eyes.

Ethan realized what had happened.

Sophie had shut down the system.

Michael stared at the little girl in disbelief.

“No.”

Sophie whispered,

“Daddy says no.”

For the first time in twenty-six years...

Michael Bennett looked afraid.

Then a gunshot rang out.

Michael dropped his weapon.

Everyone turned.

Thomas was holding the gun.

He had shot Michael.

But instead of surrendering, Thomas smiled.

“Now we can finally begin.”

He looked directly at Sophie.

“Project Eden has chosen its master.”

The lights went out.

And when they came back...

Thomas was gone.

So was Sophie.

Ethan screamed.

“SOPHIE!”

Only one thing remained on the floor.

A small pink hair clip.

And beneath it, written in black ink:

THE FINAL CHAPTER HAS BEGUN.
