Chapter 1 - The three knocks came again.Hard.

Slow.

Deliberate.

No one in the apartment moved.

My father stood beside my bed, staring at the bruises covering my body. The blue blanket had fallen to the floor, exposing everything Ryan and Linda had spent months hiding.

My ribs were yellow and purple.

There were fingerprints around my upper arm.

A dark mark wrapped around the side of my swollen stomach.

Seven months pregnant, and I looked like someone had been trying to break me piece by piece.

Ryan swallowed.

"Mr. Moretti..."

Dad raised one hand.

Ryan stopped talking.

Dad did not shout.

That was what frightened me most.

Vincent Moretti had once been a man whose enemies stopped breathing when he entered a room. Age had softened his voice, but it had not erased the cold calculation in his eyes.

He looked at me.

"Who did this?"

I couldn't answer.

My lips trembled.

Ryan stepped forward.

"It isn't what you think."

Dad slowly turned his head.

"Then tell me what I should think."

Ryan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Linda rushed in.

"Vincent, this is a misunderstanding."

Dad looked at her.

"Then explain the handprint."

Linda's face drained.

She glanced at Ryan.

Ryan looked trapped.

Another knock came from the door.

This time, someone spoke.

"Mr. Moretti."

Dad's eyes narrowed.

He recognized the voice.

He walked toward the door.

Ryan blocked him.

"You shouldn't open that."

Dad stared at him.

"Why?"

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"Because this is my house."

Dad stepped closer.

"No."

His voice was almost a whisper.

"This is where my daughter has been imprisoned."

Ryan flinched.

I had never heard Dad use that word before.

Imprisoned.

It was exactly what it felt like.

For months, every decision had been made for me.

What I ate.

Who I called.

When I slept.

Whether I could leave.

Even my phone had been taken away.

Ryan told everyone I was sick.

Linda told everyone I was unstable.

And whenever I tried to tell someone the truth, Ryan would sit beside me with that calm smile.

"Pregnancy is making her emotional."

People believed him.

They always did.

Because Ryan looked like a perfect husband.

Successful.

Polite.

Well-dressed.

Charming.

Nobody saw him after the doors closed.

Nobody heard the whispers.

Nobody knew about the nights I spent staring at the ceiling while he told me that no one would believe me.

Dad reached for the door handle.

Ryan's voice cracked.

"Please."

Dad paused.

"Why are you begging?"

Ryan didn't answer.

The door opened.

Three men stood in the hallway.

Dark suits.

No logos.

No hesitation.

The man in front stepped inside and handed Dad a black folder.

"Sir."

Dad opened it.

I watched his eyes move across the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

His expression changed.

"What is this?"

The man answered.

"Financial records."

Dad looked up.

"Whose?"

He pointed toward Ryan.

"His."

Ryan went pale.

Linda stepped backward.

Dad flipped another page.

There were wire transfers.

Offshore accounts.

Payments made every month.

And one name repeated again and again.

Dr. Adrian Cole.

My obstetrician.

Dad's fingers tightened around the folder.

Then he found something else.

A payment made two days before one of my worst injuries.

The amount was enormous.

Beside it was one word.

"Silence."

Dad slowly closed the folder.

He looked at Ryan.

"You paid my daughter's doctor?"

Ryan shook his head.

"I didn't..."

Dad stepped toward him.

"Then why did he receive money from you?"

Ryan opened his mouth.

The man beside Dad spoke.

"There's more."

Dad turned.

The man placed a second envelope on the table.

"Security footage."

He looked directly at me.

"From the apartment."

My heart stopped.

There was footage of everything.

Every door.

Every hallway.

Every night I thought no one was watching.

Dad took the envelope.

Then the man added quietly:

"Sir, you should know something else."

Dad looked at him.

"The footage begins three months before your daughter stopped answering your calls."

My entire body went cold.

Three months.

Before the bruises.

Before the lies.

Before I stopped speaking.

Before I stopped leaving the room.

Dad looked back at me.

"Emily."

My voice barely came out.

"Yes?"

He opened the envelope.

And the first photograph fell onto the floor.

It showed me asleep.

In my own bed.

May you like

With someone standing over me.

Someone who was not Ryan.
