Chapter 4 - The Vault Beneath ManhattanBy sunrise, we were in Manhattan.

I parked three blocks from my old office.

The building had been abandoned for two years after a fire.

Officially, the lower floors were condemned.

Unofficially, my vault still existed beneath them.

I unlocked the service entrance.

The stairwell smelled of dust and wet concrete.

Caleb followed without fear.

Too little fear.

That worried me.

Children were not supposed to understand underground vaults and hidden doors.

But Caleb did.

He walked straight to the basement corridor.

Then stopped.

“Here.”

I looked at the wall.

He pointed to a section of brick.

I pressed the hidden latch.

The wall opened.

Elena stared.

I said nothing.

We descended.

The vault required the six-digit code.

Caleb handed me the key.

I entered the numbers.

The steel door opened.

Inside were documents, cash, weapons, passports, and records from a life I had spent years trying to simplify.

Daniel had known this place existed.

Victor had not.

At least, that was what I believed.

A red folder sat on the center table.

My name was written across it.

Inside was a transcript from a meeting held fifteen years earlier.

I recognized the date.

The night Daniel saved my life.

We had been ambushed outside a warehouse.

Someone had leaked our route.

Daniel took the bullet.

I had always believed the leak came from a rival.

The transcript said otherwise.

The leak had originated from inside my own organization.

The source was listed as:

MERCER, DANIEL

I dropped the folder.

Elena stared at me.

“No.”

I read it again.

There was more.

Daniel had supposedly sold our route in exchange for money.

But the payment amount was impossible.

One million dollars.

My eyes narrowed.

Daniel had never touched that money.

The account had been closed six days after the transfer.

Someone had created the record.

Someone had framed him.

Then I saw another page.

A signature.

Mine.

Approving Daniel's arrest.

I stared at the handwriting.

It was mine.

But I had never signed it.

A voice came from the darkness.

“That was the night they broke him.”

I spun around.

A woman stepped from behind the shelves.

Silver hair.

Black coat.

A pistol in her hand.

I knew her.

Rachel Voss.

Daniel's former attorney.

She had vanished three years earlier.

I raised my weapon.

“Put it down.”

Rachel smiled.

“If I wanted you dead, Marcus, you'd already be dead.”

Elena moved closer to Caleb.

Rachel looked at the boy.

“Daniel trusted him.”

“Who?”

“Not Daniel.”

She pointed at Caleb.

“Caleb.”

The boy looked confused.

Rachel lowered her weapon.

“His father taught him everything.”

I stared at her.

“What did Daniel know?”

Rachel's expression hardened.

“The people who control Victor Kane.”

I waited.

“Victor was never the mastermind.”

That sentence changed everything.

“Then who is?”

Rachel looked at the vault door.

A quiet mechanical click came from outside.

Someone had entered the building.

Rachel whispered.

“They found us.”

I checked the security monitor.

Three vehicles.

Six men.

One of them was my head of security.

Thomas.

Rachel saw my expression.

“You still trust him?”

“No.”

“Good.”

The vault doors began locking automatically.

Not opening.

Locking.

Someone outside had triggered the emergency seal.

Rachel looked toward Caleb.

“Listen carefully.”

The boy stepped forward.

“Your father told me that if the vault opened, the final key would be inside.”

Caleb touched the small black key in his pocket.

Rachel shook her head.

“Not that one.”

She pointed at the wall.

“His other key.”

We searched the shelves.

Nothing.

Then Caleb walked toward a wooden box.

He opened it.

Inside was a child's drawing.

A house.

A tree.

Three people.

One figure had been drawn without a face.

Caleb touched the faceless figure.

“My dad said this was the dangerous one.”

I turned the paper over.

Three words were written on the back.

THE THIRD MAN LIVES.

Then someone fired into the vault door.

Rachel flinched.

Another shot.

The steel door shook.

She looked at me.

“We have maybe two minutes.”

I reached for the emergency tunnel.

Rachel stopped me.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because they know about it.”

She looked at Caleb.

“They are not trying to get inside.”

She pointed at the ceiling.

“They are trying to drive us out.”

A low mechanical sound started beneath our feet.

The vault floor began to descend.

Someone had activated the old elevator.

But it wasn't taking us down.

It was taking us somewhere else.

Somewhere the original architect had never placed on the blueprint.

The doors opened.

May you like

And on the other side stood Daniel Mercer.

Alive.
