Chapter 1 - The Ring on the PalmThe grand ballroom glittered beneath towering crystal chandeliers.

Hundreds of guests filled the room, their laughter blending with the soft music of a string quartet. Champagne glasses flashed beneath the lights. Expensive dresses swept across polished marble floors. Every detail of the engagement gala had been designed to announce one thing to the world:

Emma Carter and Adrian Blake were about to become the perfect power couple.

Except Emma was standing alone.

She wore an emerald-green gown that made her pale skin appear almost luminous. One hand rested against the small clutch pressed to her chest. Inside it was a folded ultrasound photograph.

Five weeks.

That was how long she had known there was a heartbeat inside her.

Five weeks of fear.

Five weeks of hope.

Five weeks of waiting for Adrian to finally choose her without hesitation.

Across the ballroom, Adrian held another woman.

Vivian Hart.

The woman beside him was breathtaking, with golden hair cascading down her back and a diamond necklace sparkling against her collarbone.

Adrian leaned toward her and whispered something.

Vivian laughed.

Then he placed one hand protectively against her waist.

Emma felt something inside her crack.

Not because she had never suspected it.

She had.

There had been too many late nights, too many canceled dinners, too many mysterious calls.

But Emma had kept telling herself that Adrian had a reason.

Tonight, however, there was no excuse left.

Her gaze drifted toward the old woman standing beside her.

Margaret Blake.

Adrian's mother.

Margaret had spent the entire evening introducing Emma as "my future daughter-in-law."

Emma quietly removed her engagement ring.

The diamond caught the chandelier light as she placed it into Margaret's trembling palm.

Margaret stared at it.

"Emma?"

Emma smiled.

It was not a happy smile.

It was the smile of someone who had finally stopped fighting a losing battle.

"Tell him I got tired of waiting to matter."

Margaret's expression collapsed.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm leaving."

"You can't leave like this."

Emma looked at her.

"I can."

She turned.

Her heels clicked against the marble.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Adrian's voice suddenly cut through the room.

"Emma?"

She kept walking.

"Emma!"

Heads turned.

The music seemed to stop.

Adrian hurried after her.

"Wait!"

Emma reached the glass doors.

His hand closed around her wrist.

She froze.

"Don't," she whispered.

Adrian lowered his voice.

"Please. We can talk."

Emma slowly turned.

"And when would that be? Between your meetings with Vivian?"

His face went pale.

"That's not what this is."

She laughed softly.

"Then what is it?"

He had no answer.

His silence told her everything.

Emma pulled her wrist free.

Then she walked out into the cold night.

Behind her, Adrian stood motionless.

But he was not looking at her anymore.

He was staring at Margaret.

Because his mother was still holding the ring.

And beneath the ring was a second object Emma had slipped into her palm.

A tiny folded piece of paper.

Margaret opened it.

Her eyes widened.

There were only six words.

Ask Adrian about July 14th.

Margaret looked up sharply.

"Adrian."

He swallowed.

"What?"

She held up the paper.

"What happened on July 14th?"

The color drained from his face.

Vivian stepped closer.

"Adrian?"

He did not answer.

Because July 14th was the one night he had spent years pretending never happened.

And someone had just reminded him that Emma remembered.

Outside, Emma stepped into a waiting car.

She placed one trembling hand over her stomach.

The driver glanced at her through the mirror.

"Where to, Miss Carter?"

Emma looked out at the ballroom glowing behind her.

"Somewhere Adrian Blake can't find me."

The car pulled away.

But Emma didn't see the black SUV parked across the street.

She didn't see the man sitting behind the wheel.

And she certainly didn't know why he had been waiting for her.

He lifted his phone.

"She left."

A pause.

Then he whispered:

"Yes. The baby is with her."
