Chapter 18 - The Forty Million Dollar DoorDaniel drove to the abandoned NorthStar headquarters.

The place had been empty for years.

Or so everyone believed.

Inside, lights were on.

A conference room waited upstairs.

Jonathan Hale sat at the table.

Older.

Calm.

Perfectly dressed.

He looked more like a retired professor than the man responsible for years of corruption.

Daniel entered carrying Lily.

Hale smiled.

“She has Rachel’s eyes.”

Daniel stopped.

“You knew her.”

“I knew her better than you think.”

Daniel put Lily into a carrier.

“Where is Emma?”

“Safe.”

“Bring her here.”

“Soon.”

Daniel glared.

“You murdered my wife.”

Hale sighed.

“Rachel was brilliant.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“She was.”

Hale stood.

“She almost destroyed everything.”

“What is everything?”

“The system.”

Daniel waited.

Hale pointed toward a screen.

Images appeared.

Judges.

Businessmen.

Police chiefs.

Politicians.

Executives.

All compromised.

“All of them needed something.”

Hale turned toward Daniel.

“Money isn’t power.”

“Then what is?”

“Secrets.”

Daniel thought about Rachel’s diary.

The missing names.

The evidence.

Hale continued.

“Your wife stole the master file.”

“The one with the names.”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Hale smiled.

“You have it.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“Rachel hid it inside the trust.”

The forty million dollars.

The DNA lock.

The secret beneficiary.

Lily.

Daniel finally understood.

Hale wanted Daniel to open the trust.

But why did he need Lily?

“Because the DNA key requires both children.”

Daniel froze.

“Both?”

“Emma and Lily.”

Daniel stared.

Hale smiled.

“Rachel designed the trust to require two separate genetic confirmations.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She never told me.”

“Because she knew you would sacrifice yourself for them.”

Suddenly, the conference room doors opened.

Emma walked in.

Daniel rushed toward her.

She ran into his arms.

“Daddy!”

He hugged her tightly.

Hale watched them.

“You see?”

Daniel looked at him.

“You lost.”

Hale frowned.

“Why?”

“Because you assumed my children were keys.”

Daniel pulled out Rachel’s diary.

“They aren't.”

He threw it onto the table.

“The real key is in the missing page.”

Hale’s face changed.

For the first time, fear appeared.

Daniel smiled.

“Rachel knew you would come for the money.”

He lifted a tiny USB drive.

“She hid the evidence somewhere else.”

“Where?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Inside your own system.”

Hale stared.

“What did you do?”

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

Marcus held up a device.

“We copied everything.”

Police sirens sounded outside.

Hale stepped backward.

“No.”

Marcus smiled.

“Every account. Every name. Every recording.”

Hale reached for his phone.

Daniel stopped him.

“It’s over.”

Hale looked at Lily.

Then at Emma.

“You have no idea what Rachel started.”

Daniel replied:

“I know exactly what she started.”

Outside, police flooded the building.

Hale was arrested.

The network collapsed within days.

But Daniel still had one question.

What happened to Rachel?

Because the evidence proved her death had been planned.

But it did not explain one impossible detail.

The final security recording from the night of the crash had been recovered.

And in it, after Rachel’s car exploded, someone had opened the passenger door.

May you like

Someone had removed her body.

Someone had made sure Daniel believed she was dead.
