Chapter 12: The Nurse Who Carried the Secret

The photograph stayed on my screen.

Linda Parker.

The nurse who had been there the night Sophie was born.

The woman who had looked nervous.

The woman who had asked questions that seemed strange at the time.

The woman who vanished from the hospital records afterward.

I remembered her.

Not clearly.

Not enough to recognize her on the street.

But enough to remember the feeling.

Something about her had always seemed wrong.

Back then, I thought it was because hospitals were stressful.

Because childbirth was overwhelming.

Because everyone was tired.

Now I understood.

She wasn’t nervous because of me.

She was nervous because she knew something.

Something she should never have known.

Rachel called me early the next morning.

“We found an address.”

“For Linda?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“A small town outside Milwaukee.”

I grabbed my coat.

Rachel immediately stopped me.

“Evelyn.”

“What?”

“You can’t just walk into this.”

“I’m not.”

“You’re emotional.”

I looked at her.

“My daughter was targeted because someone helped my brother.”

Rachel became quiet.

Then she nodded.

“I understand.”

“No.”

My voice softened.

“You don’t.”

“You have never watched your own family decide your child was the enemy.”

“You have never seen someone you trusted hurt someone innocent.”

Rachel looked down.

Then she closed the folder.

“Okay.”

“Then we do this carefully.”

Daniel came with us.

So did Anna.

At first, I didn’t want Anna involved.

Not because I didn’t trust her.

Because I was still trying to understand everything.

My best friend.

Sarah’s daughter.

A person who had hidden her identity for years.

A person who had protected my daughter while carrying a secret bigger than any of us.

But every time I looked at Sophie…

I remembered one thing.

Anna had been there.

When everyone else abandoned us…

She stayed.

Some truths hurt.

But some truths also explain why people did what they did.

Linda Parker lived alone.

A small white house.

A quiet street.

Nothing about the place suggested a woman hiding a major secret.

But I had learned something important.

Secrets rarely live in dramatic places.

Sometimes they hide behind ordinary doors.

Daniel knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

Still nothing.

Rachel looked at the windows.

“She might not be home.”

I stepped back.

Then I noticed something.

The curtains moved.

Someone was inside.

I knocked harder.

“Linda Parker?”

Silence.

Then a voice.

“Go away.”

My heart tightened.

She was there.

Rachel spoke.

“We need to talk about Preston Whitmore.”

The silence afterward told us everything.

Linda knew exactly who we were.

The door opened slightly.

An elderly woman appeared.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

“Please.”

She whispered.

“Leave before he finds out.”

I stepped forward.

“He already knows.”

Linda froze.

“What?”

“He knows I have the evidence.”

Her hand covered her mouth.

“He tried to hurt my daughter.”

The woman looked at me.

Then her expression changed.

Not fear.

Guilt.

“I’m sorry.”

Two words.

But they carried years of pain.

We entered the house.

Linda sat at the kitchen table.

Her hands shook as she held a cup of tea.

“I thought this day would never come.”

“What happened that night?”

She looked at me.

“The night Sophie was born.”

I nodded.

“Tell me everything.”

Linda took a deep breath.

“Preston came to the hospital before your daughter was delivered.”

My stomach tightened.

“He came before?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He wanted access to the records.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew Sarah was planning something.”

I looked at Anna.

She lowered her eyes.

Linda continued.

“Sarah had contacted your grandfather.”

“She told him everything.”

“About the money.”

“About the fraud.”

“About Preston.”

“So he knew?”

“Yes.”

“Your grandfather was preparing to remove Preston from the company.”

The words hit hard.

“He knew.”

Linda nodded.

“But Preston found out.”

The room became silent.

“What did Preston ask you to do?”

Linda looked ashamed.

“He asked me to change one document.”

“Which document?”

“Sophie’s birth record.”

I felt my heart stop.

“Why?”

Linda looked at me.

“Because he wanted to prove you had no connection to the child.”

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.”

“It does when you understand what he was planning.”

Linda opened an old drawer.

She pulled out a paper.

“I kept a copy.”

Rachel immediately took it.

“What is this?”

Linda answered:

“The original instruction Preston gave me.”

My hands trembled.

Rachel read the document.

Then her face changed.

“Evelyn…”

“What?”

She looked at me.

“This isn’t about inheritance.”

I stared.

“What do you mean?”

Rachel turned the paper around.

At the bottom was a name.

A name I had never seen.

Claire Bennett.

My biological mother.

Again.

“She was alive.”

The room froze.

I looked at Linda.

“You knew?”

Linda nodded slowly.

“Your biological mother was not dead.”

My breath disappeared.

“She was hidden.”

“By who?”

Linda’s eyes filled with tears.

“By your parents.”

The sentence broke something inside me.

My parents.

Again.

Every path led back to them.

“How?”

Linda looked down.

“Claire Bennett was Sarah’s sister.”

I froze.

Another connection.

Another hidden thread.

“She discovered Preston’s crimes.”

“She tried to expose him.”

“But Preston couldn’t destroy her.”

“Why?”

“Because your grandfather protected her.”

I swallowed.

“So what happened?”

Linda looked at me.

“She disappeared to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“She knew Preston would come after anyone connected to the truth.”

“She believed the safest place for you was with the Whitmore family.”

A painful laugh escaped me.

“The safest place?”

I looked around.

“At the family that lied to me?”

Linda lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Evelyn.”

“Yes?”

“There is something else Preston never knew.”

“What?”

“Your biological mother left a message.”

I froze.

“Where?”

Linda looked toward Anna.

“With Sarah.”

Anna immediately looked up.

“My mother?”

Linda nodded.

“She trusted Sarah with it.”

“Why?”

“Because Sarah promised she would give it to you when the time was right.”

My heart raced.

“What message?”

Linda looked at me.

“The truth about who your real father is.”

The room went completely silent.

My real father.

A question I had never asked.

A question I never thought mattered.

Until now.

Because if Preston wasn’t my blood brother…

Then why had my family treated me like one?

Why had my grandfather chosen me?

Why had Preston been so afraid of me?

I stood slowly.

“Where is Sarah’s message?”

Anna looked at me.

“I know where.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She swallowed.

“My mother left another box.”

“Where?”

Anna’s eyes became heavy.

“At the place where she spent her last night.”

“Where?”

She whispered:

“The old Whitmore family estate.”

My blood ran cold.

The abandoned mansion.

The place nobody had entered for years.

The place where Sarah’s final secret was hidden.

And somewhere inside that house…

Was the answer to the question that had haunted my entire life.

Who was I?

That evening, before we left, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then…

A familiar voice.

Preston.

“You’re getting closer.”

I froze.

“How are you calling me?”

A quiet laugh.

“You still think prison walls stop people like me?”

My anger rose.

“You’re finished.”

“No, Evelyn.”

His voice became colder.

“You’re just starting to understand.”

“What do you want?”

A pause.

Then:

“I want you to find the truth.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“Because when you find it…”

He whispered:

“You’ll finally understand why your own parents chose me over you.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Because for the first time…

I wondered if Preston wasn’t afraid of the truth.

Maybe he wanted me to find it.

Maybe the secret waiting inside the old Whitmore estate…

Was not something that would destroy him.

May you like

Maybe…

It would destroy me.
