Chapter 14 - Jonathan stared at the screen. His father's face filled the dark vault.

“I don't have much time.”

The recording continued.

“If you're seeing this, then I failed.”

Jonathan's mother stood motionless outside.

His father looked terrified.

“Your mother believes one of the twins carries the inheritance marker.”

He paused.

“She is wrong.”

Jonathan frowned.

“What?”

His father continued.

“The marker isn't in either child.”

Mara looked at Jonathan.

“Then where?”

His father's recorded voice answered.

“In you.”

Jonathan froze.

“You are the carrier.”

The room fell silent.

“You were born with the genetic sequence your mother has spent decades searching for.”

Jonathan's breath caught.

“But…”

His father looked directly into the camera.

“She doesn't know.”

Jonathan stared.

“That means the girls were never the key.”

His father nodded.

“They were leverage.”

The recording continued.

“Your mother created Operation Lantern to control families like ours. She moved children between identities, created false inheritances, and used genetic records to manipulate property and political alliances.”

Jonathan's mother whispered,

“Turn it off.”

Jonathan ignored her.

His father continued.

“I discovered the truth when I found out she planned to use our own son.”

Jonathan's eyes filled.

“To create a legal heir who could be controlled.”

Mara whispered,

“Jonathan.”

He couldn't look away.

“She wanted you to marry, have a child, and transfer the bloodline through that child.”

Jonathan's stomach turned.

“So Emma…”

“Was supposed to be the public heir.”

His father continued.

“Sofia was created as the contingency.”

“Why?”

“In case Emma died.”

Jonathan's mother suddenly entered the vault.

“Enough.”

Jonathan turned.

“You used me.”

She looked at him.

“I protected you.”

“You erased my memories.”

“I had to.”

“You killed people.”

She didn't deny it.

Jonathan stepped closer.

“You stole my daughter.”

“She was never yours.”

Jonathan's voice became cold.

“Biology says otherwise.”

His mother smiled.

“Biology isn't what matters.”

“It is now.”

She stared at him.

Then at Sofia.

“You chose her.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.”

Something changed in his mother's expression.

“You don't understand what you've done.”

“I understand exactly.”

She turned toward the vault.

“You have opened the archive.”

Jonathan looked at the room.

“That's what you wanted.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“It is what your father wanted.”

She stepped backward.

“Now everyone knows.”

Jonathan frowned.

“Who?”

The vault lights came on.

Every wall screen activated.

Names appeared.

Politicians.

Businessmen.

Judges.

Police officials.

Hospital directors.

Members of powerful families.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

All connected to Operation Lantern.

Mara covered her mouth.

“This is…”

“Proof,” Lydia whispered.

Jonathan looked at his mother.

“You knew this would happen.”

“Yes.”

“Then why let me open it?”

She smiled.

“Because now they will come for you.”

The screens flickered.

A message appeared.

ARCHIVE TRANSMISSION INITIATED.

Jonathan stared.

“What's happening?”

Lydia's face went white.

“It's uploading.”

“To where?”

“Everywhere.”

His mother's smile disappeared.

“You fool.”

Jonathan looked at her.

“What?”

She turned toward the exits.

“They'll erase the archive.”

A loud explosion shook the building.

The vault door began closing.

Men shouted outside.

Gunfire erupted.

Jonathan grabbed both girls.

“Move!”

They ran.

The corridor filled with smoke.

Mara coughed.

Lydia dragged her forward.

Celeste appeared from the darkness.

“There's another exit!”

Jonathan followed.

They reached a hidden tunnel leading outside.

Behind them, the mansion shook.

Then a second explosion.

The tunnel ceiling cracked.

Jonathan pushed Emma ahead.

“Keep going!”

Sofia stumbled.

Jonathan grabbed her.

“I'm here.”

She looked up.

“Why did you choose me?”

Jonathan hesitated.

“Because I should have chosen you six years ago.”

Sofia began to cry.

“You didn't know.”

“I should have.”

She whispered,

“I forgive you.”

Jonathan's chest tightened.

They reached the forest.

Police lights appeared in the distance.

Then helicopters.

For a moment, Jonathan thought they were saved.

Until Lydia looked up.

“No.”

“What?”

She pointed.

The helicopters weren't police.

Black.

Unmarked.

Armed.

Jonathan pulled the girls close.

His mother appeared at the mouth of the tunnel behind them.

She called out,

“Jonathan.”

He turned.

She smiled.

“This isn't over.”

Then she raised a remote.

Jonathan's eyes widened.

“What did you do?”

She pressed the button.

The entire Blackwood estate exploded.

The blast sent them to the ground.

Jonathan shielded Emma.

Sofia screamed.

When the smoke cleared, the mansion was gone.

So was his mother.

So was the archive.

Jonathan looked at the girls.

Alive.

He exhaled.

Then his phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

YOU SAVED THE WRONG GIRL.

Jonathan stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

A photograph.

Emma and Sofia standing together.

But the photograph had been taken from somewhere inside the tunnel.

Minutes ago.

Someone had been watching them.

Then a third message.

YOUR MOTHER NEVER LEFT.

Jonathan looked up.

Among the trees stood a woman.

Watching.

He squinted.

His mother's face.

She was holding a child.

Not Emma.

Not Sofia.

A third girl.

And the child had the same red crescent beneath her ear.

Jonathan whispered,

“No.”

May you like

The woman smiled.

Then disappeared into the trees.
