Chapter 13 - The thing that emerged from the door did not look like a fish.It did not look human.

It was a mass of black, translucent tissue wrapped around an enormous skeletal frame.
Its body seemed to shift between shapes.
For one second it had fins.
The next, arms.
Then tentacles.
Then nothing recognizable at all.
The creature rose slowly.
Every fish in the lake followed it.
Frank stared.
Joseph whispered:
“That's impossible.”
Mina stood completely still.
Emily clung to Frank.
The creature looked at Mina.
Then at Frank.
The water around them became silent.
The creature spoke.
Not with a mouth.
With memory.
Frank saw a landscape.
A world beneath the world.
A place where consciousness existed without bodies.
Where every thought remained.
Where nothing was ever truly forgotten.
The lake was only a doorway.
The laboratory was only a machine.
The experiments were only an accident.
The intelligence had existed for millions of years.
Waiting.
Frank staggered.
“What do you want?”
The creature answered.
TO BE REMEMBERED.
Frank frowned.
“You already are.”
NOT BY YOU.
Frank looked at Mina.
She nodded.
Mina spoke.
“It wants someone to carry it.”
Joseph stared.
“Carry what?”
“Memory.”
The creature moved closer.
I CAN LIVE INSIDE THE MIND OF EVERY HUMAN.
Frank's blood went cold.
Emily whispered:
“That would destroy everyone.”
Mina nodded.
“That is why we stop it.”
Frank looked at her.
“How?”
Mina turned toward him.
“You built the door.”
Frank stared.
“I built it?”
“You built the key.”
Frank understood.
The implant.
His memories.
The facility.
The system.
He was the only person capable of closing it.
But there was a problem.
Frank would have to remain inside the network.
Joseph realized it.
“No.”
Frank looked at him.
“I have to.”
“No.”
“I don't have a choice.”
Joseph grabbed him.
“I lost you once.”
Frank smiled.
“You didn't.”
Joseph's eyes filled.
“You're my brother.”
Frank nodded.
“And you're still here.”
He hugged him.
Emily began crying.
Frank turned toward her.
“My little girl.”
She shook her head.
“I'm not little.”
Frank laughed.
“No.”
He wiped her tears.
“You're not.”
Mina approached.
Frank knelt.
She lowered her head.
He placed his hand against her scales.
“I was wrong.”
Mina closed her eyes.
“You came back.”
Frank smiled.
“Yeah.”
The creature began moving forward.
The water rose.
Joseph shouted:
“Frank!”
Frank stepped toward the core.
The implant in his chest began glowing.
The duplicate appeared.
This time, his face was calm.
He looked at Frank.
“Ready?”
Frank nodded.
“No.”
The duplicate smiled.
“Good.”
Frank laughed.
He reached the core.
Mina joined him.
The creature roared.
The lake exploded.
Joseph grabbed Emily and dove beneath the surface.
Frank activated the machine.
The entire lake lit up.
Every memory surged through the network.
Frank saw his wife.
His children.
His mother.
Joseph.
Mina.
Everyone.
The creature screamed.
Frank held the switch.
“Get out!”
Mina remained.
Frank shouted:
“Mina!”
She looked at him.
“I choose.”
Frank realized.
She wasn't staying because she had to.
She was staying because she wanted to.
Frank smiled.
“Then let's finish this.”
The creature attacked.
Frank triggered the final sequence.
The network began collapsing.
The creature screamed again.
The lake boiled.
The tower shattered.
Every light went out.
Frank's body disappeared into darkness.
And somewhere beneath the collapsing water, Mina spoke one final sentence.
May you like
“I remember you.”
Then everything went black.
