Chapter 15 - The world changed in a single night.News channels exploded.

Governments denied everything.

Whistleblowers appeared.

Documents leaked.

People who had been declared dead surfaced.

Families discovered missing relatives.

Politicians resigned.

Companies collapsed.

The existence of Project Echo became undeniable.

But one question remained.

Who created it?

David stood in the ruins of the underground facility.

Emily sat beside Rebecca.

Thomas had survived.

Mark had too.

Barely.

Margaret was gone.

Everyone believed she had died in the explosion.

David didn't believe it.

He looked at the final file.

SUBJECT ZERO.

ELIAS GRAY.

He opened it.

The file contained one video.

Recorded twelve years earlier.

David pressed play.

A younger version of himself appeared on screen.

Calm.

Focused.

Unrecognizable.

He looked directly into the camera.

"My name is Elias Gray."

David stared.

The video continued.

"I created Project Echo."

David's hands shook.

"I believed memory was the source of human conflict."

The younger Elias continued.

"If we could remove trauma, hatred and dangerous knowledge, we could create peace."

David whispered:

"Jesus."

The video went on.

"But I discovered a problem."

A pause.

"People cannot be controlled without destroying the part of them that makes them human."

The younger Elias looked tired.

"So I designed a final protocol."

David leaned closer.

"The protocol would erase my own memory."

The room went silent.

"I needed someone outside the system to stop me if Echo ever became what I feared."

The camera shifted.

Rebecca appeared.

Younger.

Standing behind him.

The younger Elias looked toward her.

"If you're watching this, Evelyn, then you kept your promise."

David stared at Rebecca.

She was crying.

The video continued.

"Do not let me remember."

David whispered:

"You knew."

Rebecca nodded.

"I promised you."

The screen changed.

A second file appeared.

SUBJECT ZERO'S FINAL INSTRUCTION.

David opened it.

The younger Elias spoke again.

"If Project Echo is ever exposed, do not destroy it."

David frowned.

"Why?"

"Because the technology is too dangerous to disappear."

He paused.

"Someone must keep it where no one can use it."

David understood.

"Me."

The younger Elias nodded.

"You are the only person I trust to destroy what I created."

The video ended.

David sat down.

For twelve years he had believed someone had stolen his identity.

But the truth was worse.

He had surrendered it willingly.

He had buried Elias Gray so David Whitmore could exist.

And the funeral had been the moment that buried identity finally came back.

Emily approached him.

"Dad."

David looked at her.

"Do you still know who you are?"

He smiled sadly.

"I don't."

Emily took his hand.

"Then start over."

David looked at Rebecca.

She stepped toward him.

"I loved David."

David nodded.

"I know."

"And I loved Elias."

He looked at her.

"I know."

She waited.

"Which one are you?"

David looked toward the ruined facility.

Then at the sunrise outside.

"I think I'm both."

Thomas walked toward them, his arm in a sling.

"That's complicated."

David smiled.

"So is family."

For the first time in days, they laughed.

But then Mark entered.

His face was serious.

"I found something."

David looked at him.

"What?"

Mark handed him a small envelope.

No name.

No address.

Only three words.

FOR THE FUNERAL.

David opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

The same funeral hall.

The same coffin.

But the photograph had been taken before David arrived.

It showed someone standing beside the coffin.

A man.

David stared.

It was him.

But not David.

Elias.

Alive.

And standing beside him was another person.

David's missing son.

On the back of the photograph was a message.

YOU SAVED THE WRONG CHILD.

David's smile disappeared.

Emily looked over his shoulder.

"Who is that?"

David couldn't answer.

Mark whispered:

"That's your son."

Rebecca covered her mouth.

The phone in David's pocket suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Silence.

Then a boy's voice.

"Dad?"

David's heart stopped.

"Who is this?"

The boy laughed softly.

"You really don't remember me?"

David froze.

The voice continued.

"I remember everything."

David looked at the photograph.

The boy's voice became quieter.

"And I know what Echo was really built for."

David couldn't breathe.

"What?"

A pause.

Then:

"Not to erase memories."

David gripped the phone.

"Then what?"

The boy whispered:

"To transfer them."

David looked at Emily.

Then Rebecca.

Then Mark.

A horrible thought formed in his mind.

The voice continued:

"Dad..."

"Yes?"

"Everyone you think you know..."

A long pause.

"...might be someone else."

The call ended.

David stood completely still.

Around him, the ruined machines began powering on.

One screen flickered.

Then another.

Then dozens.

A single message appeared across all of them.

WELCOME BACK, SUBJECT ZERO.

David looked at Emily.

Emily looked terrified.

And somewhere in the darkness beneath the ruined facility, a child's voice whispered:

"Let's finish what we started."

The screen went black.

And this time...

May you like

David knew the funeral was never for him.

It was for the man he had been pretending to be.
