Chapter 7 - THE LOVE THAT WAS PLANNEDRen could not breathe.

Draven stared at the stranger.
âWhat did you do?â
The man smiled.
âI moved pieces.â
âYou followed her.â
âYes.â
âYou manipulated Baron Silas.â
âYes.â
âYou sent the hunters.â
âYes.â
Ren stepped forward.
âWhy?â
The stranger looked at her.
âBecause you would never have come to Blackwood willingly.â
Draven's voice became deadly.
âYou used her.â
âI needed her beside you.â
âWhy?â
The stranger smiled.
âBecause the blood bond only activates through attachment.â
Ren's heart sank.
âYou needed us to fall in love.â
The stranger nodded.
âThat was the purpose.â
Draven turned toward Ren.
His expression was unreadable.
Ren whispered,
âDo you believe him?â
Draven didn't answer.
The silence hurt more than anything.
The stranger laughed.
âLook at him.â
He spoke to Ren.
âHe was trained to distrust everyone.â
Then he looked at Draven.
âAnd yet she was able to make you trust her in less than a week.â
Draven's jaw tightened.
âGet out of my mind.â
âYou are not immune to me.â
Draven suddenly grabbed his chest.
Pain struck.
Ren caught him.
âDraven!â
The stranger watched.
âYour bond is already deep.â
Ren looked up.
âWhat happens if we break it?â
The man's smile vanished.
âYou die.â
Draven slowly raised his head.
âBoth of us?â
âNo.â
A pause.
âOnly him.â
Ren froze.
The stranger continued.
âThe guardian must sacrifice himself.â
Draven's eyes darkened.
âSo that's the plan.â
âYes.â
âYou wanted me to love her.â
âYes.â
âYou wanted me to die protecting her.â
âYes.â
Draven smiled.
Not with happiness.
With cold understanding.
âThen you made one mistake.â
The stranger frowned.
Draven stood.
âYou assumed I would follow your rules.â
Power exploded through the room.
The stranger staggered.
Draven's silver eyes burned brighter.
Ren grabbed his hand.
The bond between them flashed.
A wall of light erupted.
Alaric stepped forward.
âDraven!â
Draven turned.
âWhy did you let this happen?â
His father lowered his gaze.
âI was trying to protect you.â
âBy disappearing?â
âYes.â
âBy letting me grow up believing you were dead?â
âYes.â
âYou failed.â
Alaric's eyes filled with regret.
âI know.â
Draven stepped closer.
âThen help me fix it.â
Alaric looked at Ren.
âShe is the key.â
Ren frowned.
âTo what?â
âThe Heart.â
Draven stiffened.
âThe crystal?â
âThe real one.â
Alaric pointed toward the floor.
âThe crystal you destroyed was only a shell.â
Ren's stomach dropped.
âThen where is the real Heart?â
Alaric answered,
âInside you.â
Silence.
Ren shook her head.
âNo.â
âYour mother placed it there when she hid your bloodline.â
Draven stared.
âThat meansâŠâ
âYou are carrying the thing that the ancient king needs.â
Vesper emerged from the shadows.
âAnd nowâŠâ
He smiled.
âWe simply have to cut it out.â
Ren screamed as chains of black magic wrapped around her wrists.
Draven lunged.
Vesper raised one hand.
The floor exploded.
Draven was thrown across the room.
âDRAVEN!â
He hit the stone wall.
Ren struggled.
Vesper approached her.
âYou were always going to belong to us.â
Ren's eyes filled with tears.
âNo.â
Vesper reached toward her.
Then Draven stood.
Blood ran from his mouth.
His voice was quiet.
âTouch her.â
Vesper stopped.
âGo ahead.â
Draven's eyes turned completely silver.
âTry.â
Every candle in the throne room blew out.
A pulse of power spread across the kingdom.
The soldiers outside dropped to their knees.
The wolves howled.
Vesper stepped backward.
âWhat are you?â
Draven smiled.
For the first time, he no longer looked like the Weapon of Blackwood.
He looked like something older.
Something terrifying.
âI am the reason your master spent twenty years hiding.â
Then a voice echoed through the palace.
The ancient king screamed.
âGUARDIAN.â
Draven answered.
âCOME.â
The entire kingdom shook.
And beneath the palace, the ground split open.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Draven looked at Ren.
âStay behind me.â
She shook her head.
âNo.â
âRen.â
âI started this with you.â
She tightened her grip on his hand.
âI finish it with you.â
May you like
Their bond flared.
And somewhere below them, something began climbing the stairs.
