Chapter 14 - The doors below the warehouse opened.People began running.

Not guards.

Children.

Teenagers.

Young adults.

Some barefoot.

Some carrying nothing.

Some crying.

Some silent.

Émilie watched them flood through the corridor.

The Garden.

It had been real.

Far larger than anyone had imagined.

The boss ran.

Gabriel chased him.

Claire disappeared into the crowd.

Henri cut Lucie's restraints.

“Get them outside.”

Émilie looked at Atlas.

The dog was staring at one particular girl.

A small girl standing at the end of the corridor.

Eight years old.

Holding a red flower.

She looked at Émilie.

Then whispered:

“You came back.”

Émilie approached slowly.

“Who are you?”

The girl's eyes filled with tears.

“Your mother told me you would forget me.”

Émilie knelt.

“What is your name?”

The girl whispered:

“Lina.”

Henri stopped behind her.

His face went pale.

“No.”

Émilie turned.

“What?”

Henri stared at the child.

“She is the third daughter.”

Silence.

Lina looked at Émilie.

“We used to sleep together.”

Émilie's memories exploded.

A bedroom.

Three cribs.

A lullaby.

A woman singing.

A dog sleeping beside the door.

And a little girl holding her hand.

Lina.

She remembered.

Not everything.

Enough.

She remembered her biological mother whispering:

“If you ever forget, Atlas will bring you back.”

Émilie began to cry.

Lina grabbed her hand.

“I knew you'd find me.”

Then the boss appeared on the upper balcony.

“You still don't understand.”

He held the metal cylinder.

“This contains the identities of everyone in The Garden.”

Gabriel raised his weapon.

“Drop it.”

The boss laughed.

“If I destroy this, thousands of people lose their legal existence forever.”

Émilie looked up.

“You're bluffing.”

“No.”

He opened the cylinder.

Inside was a small data chip.

“Every birth record. Every transfer. Every death certificate.”

He smiled.

“This is the most powerful piece of information on Earth.”

Claire appeared beside him.

Then something unexpected happened.

Claire shot him.

Once.

He fell.

Claire caught the chip.

Everyone stared.

She walked toward Émilie.

“I didn't betray him.”

“Then what are you doing?”

“Finishing what your mother started.”

Claire handed the chip to Lina.

Émilie stared.

“Why her?”

Claire whispered:

“Because the third daughter was the only one they could never rewrite.”

Suddenly the entire building shook.

A fire alarm screamed.

Smoke filled the corridor.

Claire pushed Émilie toward an emergency exit.

“Take them.”

“What about you?”

“I have to stay.”

“Why?”

Claire looked at her.

“Because someone has to close The Garden.”

She turned.

Then paused.

“One more thing.”

“What?”

“Your father is alive.”

Émilie's heart stopped.

“Daniel?”

Claire shook her head.

“Not Daniel.”

She looked toward the burning corridor.

“The man who really fathered you.”

Then Claire disappeared into the smoke.

Émilie escaped with Lina, Lucie, Atlas, Henri, and dozens of survivors.

Outside, sirens filled the night.

News cameras arrived.

Police surrounded the building.

The city finally saw what had been hidden for decades.

Émilie thought it was over.

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No voice.

Only a recording.

Her biological mother's voice.

The same lullaby.

But this time, there was something beneath it.

A whisper.

Seven words.

Émilie's face went pale.

She knew that voice.

It belonged to the old man.

The dog was waiting for the wrong daughter.

Atlas suddenly ran into the darkness.

Émilie chased him.

He stopped at the original street corner.

There, beneath the old awning, someone had placed a new photograph.

Émilie picked it up.

It showed her biological mother.

Pregnant.

Standing beside the old man.

On the back was a date.

A date twenty-one years in the future.

Impossible.

May you like

And beneath it:

SHE KNEW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN.
