Chapter 14 - THE LAST MEMORYThe silence after zero was worse than the sirens.
Every lock disengaged.
Every hallway opened.
The system went quiet.
Ethan stared at Daniel.
“What did you do?”
Daniel answered slowly.
“I gave them the information.”
“What information?”
“Your father's research.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“You betrayed him.”
Daniel nodded.
“I thought I was helping.”
“Why?”
“Because I believed Halcyon could save people.”
Ethan looked at Emmie.
“And my father?”
“He tried to stop us.”
Vivian entered the room.
Her face was pale.
“You don't understand what you are holding.”
Ethan turned.
“Then explain.”
Vivian pointed toward the core chamber.
“That array contains every memory they couldn't categorize.”
“Whose?”
“Everyone.”
“Why?”
“Because the system learned that memories become unstable when separated from context.”
Ethan frowned.
“Meaning?”
Vivian looked at Emmie.
“It needs a living anchor.”
Emmie whispered:
“Me.”
Vivian nodded.
“That is why the chain was necessary.”
Ethan finally understood.
The chain wasn't keeping Emmie captive.
It was keeping her connected.
Without it, the system would lose its anchor.
That was why the countdown had begun.
Not to kill her.
To force the system into another host.
Ethan looked at himself.
“No.”
Vivian nodded.
“That's why your arrival changed everything.”
“You wanted me to replace her.”
“Yes.”
He stared at Daniel.
“And Daniel?”
“He was the failed version.”
Daniel gave a bitter smile.
“I can carry memories.”
“But?”
“I can't tell which ones belong to me.”
Ethan looked at the thousands of memory strips.
He understood the horror.
A person could live forever without ever knowing whether a thought was truly theirs.
Emmie suddenly grabbed his hand.
“There's one memory left.”
“What?”
“The one my father erased.”
“Your father?”
She looked at the core.
“My real father.”
Ethan stared.
“Who?”
Emmie pointed toward Vivian.
Vivian went still.
“No.”
Ethan turned.
“You know her?”
Emmie whispered:
“She was my mother.”
The room seemed to freeze.
Vivian's face broke.
For the first time, she looked human.
“Emmie…”
Ethan stared at the two of them.
“You had a daughter?”
Vivian nodded.
“I thought you died.”
“I was never allowed to die.”
Emmie began crying.
“You left me.”
Vivian took one step forward.
“They took you from me.”
“But you let them.”
“I had no choice.”
“You always had a choice.”
The core chamber began glowing brighter.
The system spoke.
“EMOTIONAL CONFLICT DETECTED.”
The memory strips began spinning.
“ANCHOR INSTABILITY.”
Ethan realized what was happening.
The system was feeding on their emotions.
“Stop talking.”
Vivian looked at him.
“What?”
“It's using us.”
He reached for the main console.
“We need to shut it down.”
Daniel grabbed his arm.
“If you destroy the array, everyone connected to it could lose their memories.”
“Then what do we do?”
Daniel looked at Emmie.
“She decides.”
Ethan stared.
“She's nine.”
“She was nine when they made her.”
He looked at Emmie.
“What do you want?”
She wiped her tears.
“I want my memories back.”
“And then?”
She looked at Vivian.
“I want to forget hers.”
Ethan understood.
The system could not survive without an anchor.
If Emmie disconnected willingly, Halcyon would collapse.
But the process could destroy her.
He knelt.
“I'm not letting you do it alone.”
Emmie shook her head.
“You have to.”
“Why?”
She looked into his eyes.
“Because someone has to remember what happened.”
The system began counting again.

Daniel stepped forward.
“I'll do it.”
Ethan turned.
“What?”
“I'm already a copy.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Let me carry the memories.”
“No.”
“Ethan.”
Daniel looked at him.
“For once, let me be your brother.”
The countdown began.

The core opened.
Daniel stepped inside.

When the emergency lights returned, Daniel was gone.
And the screen displayed one final message:
