Chapter 1 - “Dad… open that wall!”Six-year-old Lily fought to get back into the storage room.

Vanessa dragged her away by the arm.
“Stop it, Lily!”
The little girl struggled harder.
“He’s in there!”
Vanessa suddenly covered Lily’s mouth.
That was her mistake.
Daniel Ashford walked into the hallway at exactly the wrong moment.
He froze.
His daughter’s frightened eyes met his.
Vanessa’s hand was still pressed over Lily’s mouth.
Daniel’s voice dropped dangerously low.
“Take your hand off her.”
Vanessa released Lily immediately.
“Daniel, you’re misunderstanding.”
“I’m not.”
He stepped between them.
Lily ran behind him and wrapped both arms around his waist.
“Daddy, she won’t let me show you.”
Daniel looked down.
“What were you trying to show me?”
Lily pointed toward the storage room.
“The wall.”
Vanessa went pale.
Daniel noticed.
That tiny reaction changed everything.
He looked at the massive antique wardrobe standing against the far wall.
Lily whispered, “Behind it.”
“Daniel,” Vanessa said quickly, “this is ridiculous.”
He didn’t answer.
He walked toward the wardrobe.
It was an enormous piece of carved oak, heavy enough that three men would normally have struggled to move it.
Daniel gripped the side.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Please don’t.”
Daniel stopped.
“Why?”
Silence.
“Why shouldn’t I move it?”
“I just…”
“You just what?”
Vanessa had no answer.
Daniel shoved.
The wardrobe groaned across the floor.
Dust spilled from underneath.
Behind it was a section of plaster painted the same color as the wall.
Too perfect.
Too smooth.
Daniel ran his fingers along the surface.
A faint seam.
His expression changed.
“Lily.”
She looked up.
“How did you know?”
She swallowed.
“I heard someone.”
Vanessa snapped, “She has an imagination!”
Daniel turned.
“Enough.”
He picked up a hammer from the nearby workbench.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“Daniel, don’t.”
He raised the hammer.
“Why not?”
“Because you don’t know what’s behind it.”
“That’s exactly why I’m opening it.”
He struck.
BAM.
The plaster cracked.
BAM.
A chunk fell away.
BAM.
The wall split open.
Behind the plaster was steel.
Daniel stared.
A narrow metal door had been built into the wall.
There was no handle.
Only a small circular lock.
Lily pressed against Daniel’s leg.
“That’s where he is.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?”
She whispered one word.
“Uncle.”
Vanessa almost stumbled backward.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“I don’t have a brother.”
Lily shook her head.
“Not your brother.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
Another sound came from behind the door.
THUD.
Everyone froze.
Then again.
THUD.
Something was striking the other side.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Hello?”
Nothing.
Another impact.
THUD.
Lily covered her ears.
Daniel examined the lock.
It was modern.
Not decades old.
Someone had installed this recently.
He pulled out his phone.
“Call the police.”
Vanessa lunged for it.
“No!”
Daniel caught her wrist.
Her breathing became frantic.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
She stared at the metal door.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“They’ll kill us.”
Daniel released her.
“Who?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel crouched beside the door.
There was a small ventilation slit near the bottom.
He lowered himself.
“Hello?”
A faint voice came through.
“Daniel…”
Daniel’s blood went cold.
He knew that voice.
He had heard it every night for years.
He stood.
“No.”
Vanessa whispered, “You know him.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What did you do?”
The voice behind the door came again.
Weak.
Broken.
“Daniel… don’t trust Vanessa.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Open the door.”
She shook her head.
“I can’t.”
“Then I will.”
He examined the hinges.
Then the lock.
Then the wall.
There had to be another mechanism.
Lily suddenly pointed upward.
“Daddy.”
Daniel looked.
A tiny red light blinked inside the ceiling.
A camera.
Someone was watching them.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A text appeared.
DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR.
Another message arrived immediately.
YOUR DAUGHTER DIES FIRST.
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
Lily looked up at him.
“Daddy?”
Daniel locked the phone.
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at the door.
And for the first time, he understood.
The metal room wasn’t the secret.
The real secret was that someone outside the mansion was controlling what happened inside it.
And they had just realized Daniel knew.
The lock clicked.
From the inside.
Daniel stepped backward.
May you like
The metal door began to open.
By itself.
