Chapter 14 - THE FINAL RECORDINGVoss was already seated when I entered the restaurant.

He looked older.

Tired.

Human.

That almost made me trust him.

Almost.

Dana and two investigators were positioned nearby.

Voss smiled.

“You came.”

“Why did you ask me here?”

“To tell you the truth.”

I sat.

“Then tell it.”

He folded his hands.

“Daniel discovered the access network.”

“I know.”

“He confronted Evan.”

“I know.”

“He documented everything.”

“I know.”

Voss nodded.

“But you don't know why Daniel hid the archive.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because he knew you would investigate.”

“That's what I do.”

“Exactly.”

He leaned closer.

“He knew that if you saw the full network, you'd become the target.”

“And you protected me?”

Voss looked away.

“No.”

The honesty shocked me.

“I protected myself.”

He admitted coordinating with Evan.

He admitted using Redbridge Holdings.

He admitted funneling money to Caleb.

He admitted pushing Monica toward CPS.

But then came the part I didn't expect.

“I never wanted Eli harmed.”

“You used him.”

“Yes.”

The word landed like a slap.

“Why?”

“Because you wouldn't surrender your career.”

“You destroyed my family.”

“I thought you'd resign.”

“You didn't know me very well.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I knew exactly how you would react.”

He paused.

“That's why the plan failed.”

I stared.

“The plan wasn't to take Eli permanently.”

“No.”

“The plan was to break me.”

“Yes.”

He looked down.

“I didn't expect you to document everything.”

I almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was absurd.

“I was a JAG.”

“I know.”

Then Voss pulled out a device.

A recorder.

He placed it on the table.

“Everything you're hearing tonight is recorded.”

“Why?”

“Because I am tired of being the only person who knows what they did.”

He pressed play.

The recording contained Caleb.

Evan.

Sandra.

Monica.

All discussing the plan.

Then another voice.

My breath caught.

Daniel.

His voice.

Recorded months before his death.

“I know about the archive.”

Voss's voice answered.

“You don't understand what you're holding.”

Daniel said:

“Neither do you.”

The recording continued.

Daniel threatened to expose the network.

Voss warned him.

Then the final segment played.

Daniel said something that made my eyes fill.

“If Rachel ever comes after you, don't touch my son.”

Voss had laughed.

“We won't.”

Then Daniel answered:

“You'll have to go through me first.”

The recording ended.

I sat completely still.

Voss looked at me.

“Daniel wasn't killed because of the case.”

I stared at him.

“He wasn't killed by us.”

“What happened?”

“He had an accident.”

My jaw tightened.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“We didn't cause it.”

“Did you cause the circumstances?”

Silence.

Then Voss admitted:

“We pressured him.”

That was the truth.

Not murder.

Not conspiracy to kill.

But pressure.

Threats.

Fear.

Enough to change behavior.

Enough to create risk.

Enough to haunt a family.

Dana stepped forward.

“Martin Voss, you're under arrest.”

His face went blank.

Investigators moved.

He didn't resist.

Then he looked at me.

“You want to know the worst part?”

I said nothing.

“Caleb never told us where Daniel hid everything.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He searched your house for months.”

I felt cold.

“Then what did you put in the basement?”

Voss smiled bitterly.

“Nothing.”

My stomach dropped.

The wall had been rebuilt by Caleb.

The microphones had been planted by Caleb.

But the archive wasn't there.

Voss looked at me.

“The real archive was in your first folder.”

I froze.

“The white folder?”

“Yes.”

I remembered.

Medical records.

School records.

Routine paperwork.

Nothing unusual.

Then I saw it.

The hidden seam.

The key.

Daniel had hidden the key inside the folder.

But the box had not contained the archive.

It contained the instructions.

I had mistaken the map for the treasure.

Voss leaned back.

“Look at the first medical record.”

I pulled it from my bag.

The pediatrician's file.

There was a tiny reference number at the bottom.

A-217-03.

Unit 217.

File 03.

The archive wasn't in the storage unit.

It was under it.

Dana stared at me.

“There's another compartment.”

We left immediately.

At the storage facility, investigators removed the floor panel beneath Unit 217.

A sealed metal drive case was hidden below.

Inside were encrypted files.

The full network.

Payments.

Emails.

Names.

Every manipulated report.

Every fake allegation.

Every payment to Monica.

Every payment to Caleb.

Every communication with Evan and Voss.

And one final folder.

Its title was:

FOR RACHEL

I opened it.

Inside was a letter from Daniel.

You will find this only if they come for Eli.

I read the next line.

I am sorry you had to.

Then:

You were never supposed to fight this alone.

I stared at the screen through tears.

There was one final attachment.

A photograph.

Daniel holding baby Eli.

His smile bright.

Young.

Alive.

And beneath it were six words:

Protect him. Then protect yourself.

I closed my eyes.

For the first time since the knock at 4:47, I knew exactly what I was fighting.

Not my sister.

Not CPS.

Not even Evan or Voss.

May you like

I was fighting the lie they had built around my life.

And now I had the evidence to tear it apart.
