Chapter 14 - The Last Bellandi DinnerThe old Bellandi social club had once been the center of the family's power.

Before Dominic inherited the organization, before his father died, and before Vittorio challenged the succession, the club had hosted private dinners where business deals were made beneath paintings of dead relatives.
Its ballroom had held weddings, memorials, and celebrations that lasted until dawn.
Now the building stood abandoned behind a row of shuttered storefronts. Dust covered the marble floors. The chandeliers had been stripped of most of their crystals, and water stains spread across the ceiling where the roof had been neglected.
At 11:56 p.m., Dominic entered through the front doors.
He was alone.
At least, he appeared to be.
Matteo's men had established a perimeter several streets away. A second team monitored the rear entrance. The police had received an anonymous report about suspicious activity in the building, but no officers had been directed toward the entrance.
Dominic carried no document.
He carried no weapon.
He had one phone in his pocket and a small recording device concealed beneath his shirt.
He had also made a decision.
He would not kill Vittorio merely because he could.
Not until he knew exactly what had happened to Luca Vale, what role Enzo had played, and whether his own signature had helped condemn an innocent man.
The ballroom doors were open.
Vittorio stood at the far end of the room, silver hair combed neatly back and hands folded over the head of a polished cane. He looked older than Dominic remembered, but the eyes were unchanged.
Cold.
Patient.
Certain that everyone in the room had a price.
“My nephew,” Vittorio said.
Dominic stopped several feet away.
“You're supposed to be dead.”
Vittorio smiled.
“People believe many comforting things when they don't have the courage to look for evidence.”
“You arranged the attacks.”
“I arranged an opportunity. Your enemies did what enemies do.”
“You used information taken from my private sessions.”
“I used the information you gave away.”
Dominic's expression hardened.
“You had no right.”
Vittorio laughed.
“No right? You built your empire on the idea that power belongs to the man who can take it. Now you object because someone has taken something from you.”
“I want the truth about Luca Vale.”
For the first time, Vittorio's smile weakened.
“Why?”
“Because I signed the authorization that sent men to kill him.”
“And you believe that matters now?”
“It matters if you gave me false information.”
Vittorio tapped his cane against the floor.
“Your father was a weak man who wanted everyone to believe that a criminal family could be governed by rules. He trusted people who had no blood claim to the organization. He gave Elena influence over assets that belonged to the Bellandis. He believed she would save you from yourself.”
Dominic remained still.
“You knew about the trust.”
“Of course.”
“And you wanted it transferred.”
“I wanted what should have belonged to me.”
“What belonged to you?” Dominic asked. “The warehouses? The accounts? The loyalty of men you spent years bribing? Or the right to decide which family members were expendable?”
Vittorio's eyes narrowed.
“You sound like your father.”
“Then perhaps I should have listened to him sooner.”
The older man regarded him for a long moment.
“You think your father was innocent? Alessandro built this family with blood. He made decisions that destroyed lives. Yet he wanted to leave behind a letter explaining why his sons should feel guilty for doing what he taught them to do.”
Dominic felt the truth in the accusation.
His father had not been a good man by ordinary standards. He had ordered violence, controlled territory, and forced people to choose between obedience and survival.
Dominic had inherited that world.
But inheritance did not make every choice inevitable.
“What did you do to Luca?” Dominic asked.
Vittorio looked toward the empty tables.
“I removed a problem.”
“Was he working with investigators?”
“He was working against us.”
“He was trying to expose you.”
“He was a traitor.”
“He was trying to prevent you from transferring the family's assets to rival interests.”
Vittorio's expression hardened.
“Do you know what your father did when he learned the truth? He refused to act. He wanted proof. He wanted a proper investigation. He wanted to protect the family's reputation.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“And you used me.”
“I gave you information. You made the decision.”
The words struck with brutal clarity.
Dominic remembered the original report. He had been twenty-six, exhausted, and determined to prove that he could act decisively. He had signed the authorization because his advisers warned that Luca's involvement could expose the organization.
He had never demanded the original communications.
He had never spoken to Luca.
He had never asked why a supposed traitor was risking his life to deliver information through channels that should have been monitored.
Vittorio had not forced his hand.
He had simply offered Dominic the kind of certainty the young Boss wanted.
Dominic looked down.
For years, he had believed that accepting responsibility meant owning the consequences of his decisions.
Now he understood that it also meant refusing to hide behind the people who had manipulated him.
“Where is the original report?” he asked.
Vittorio smiled.
“Bring me the trust documents, and I will tell you.”
“No.”
The smile disappeared.
“No?” Vittorio repeated.
“The documents remain with Elena.”
“You came here without them?”
“Yes.”
Vittorio's face twisted with anger.
“You would risk everything for a woman who abandoned you?”
Dominic lifted his eyes.
“She left because I told her to.”
For the first time, Vittorio seemed unable to answer.
Dominic continued.
“She did not abandon me. She refused to keep sacrificing herself for my comfort.”
Vittorio struck the floor with his cane.
“Sentiment has made you weak.”
“No. Sentiment made me careless. I believed that Elena would always forgive me, just as I believed you would never betray your own family.”
He stepped closer.
“I was wrong about both.”
Vittorio looked toward the ballroom doors.
“You have no idea how many men have already chosen my side.”
“Then why are you meeting me alone?”
The older man's jaw tightened.
Dominic saw the answer before Vittorio spoke.
Because the men who supported Vittorio did not trust him enough to stand beside him when the truth became dangerous.
They wanted the money, the access, the promise of a stronger position.
They did not want to be the men left holding the consequences.
Vittorio raised his chin.
“You have until dawn to bring me the documents.”
“No.”
“You think you can stop me?”
Dominic held his gaze.
“I think my father already did.”
A new voice came from behind the ballroom doors.
“No,” Elena said. “He only made sure you couldn't finish what you started.”
Both men turned.
Elena stepped into the room with Matteo beside her. Her coat was buttoned to the throat, and her injured shoulder was held carefully. She carried a document case in one hand.
Dominic's first instinct was to move toward her.
He stopped.
She had asked him to respect her decisions.
He would not turn her arrival into another opportunity to take control.
Vittorio stared at her.
“You should have stayed away.”
“You sent men to take me from my friend's home. You attacked my husband's family. You threatened to kill me for a document I had no intention of surrendering.”
Elena set the case on a nearby table.
“I think I've stayed away long enough.”
Vittorio looked toward Dominic.
“You brought her here.”
“I didn't,” Dominic replied.
Elena opened the case.
Inside were copies of the trust records, Arthur Levin's legal notice, Francesca's message logs, and a transcript of Luca's recording.
“You wanted the documents because they establish that the trust was created to prevent an unauthorized transfer of family assets,” she said. “The notice has already been filed. The custodian has acknowledged it. Several transactions are under review.”
Vittorio's face went pale.
“You had no authority to do that.”
“I am the appointed trustee.”
“You are not a Bellandi.”
“No,” Elena said. “I am not.”
She looked directly at him.
“And that is precisely why your brother-in-law trusted me with it.”
Vittorio took a step toward the table.
Matteo moved to block him.
“You will not touch those documents.”
“You think a piece of paper can stop me?”
“No,” Elena answered. “But evidence can stop people from believing you.”
She placed the transcript in front of him.
“Luca Vale's original message has been recovered. It establishes that he was trying to expose your arrangement with Enzo Marra. The transaction records establish that you were preparing to transfer assets before Alessandro died. Francesca has provided the communications linking your network to the security information used in the attacks.”
Vittorio looked at Dominic.
“You would believe a therapist over your own uncle?”
Dominic's face was hard.
“I believe the evidence.”
“Then you are a fool.”
“Perhaps. But I am done signing my name to accusations I haven't examined.”
Vittorio reached inside his coat.
Matteo shouted.
A gunshot erupted through the ballroom.
Dominic lunged toward Elena, pulling her behind the table as a second shot shattered a lamp. Matteo's men rushed through the side entrance. One of Vittorio's associates attempted to escape through the rear corridor but was intercepted.
Elena hit the floor, her shoulder screaming with pain.
Dominic crouched beside her.
“Are you hurt?”
“I'm fine.”
“You're bleeding.”
She glanced at her arm. The bandage had begun to darken where she had struck it against the table.
“It's not the gunshot.”
Dominic looked toward the ballroom.
Vittorio was moving toward the rear exit, using the confusion to disappear.
Matteo chased him.
Elena pushed herself upright.
“Dominic, don't let them shoot him.”
He turned toward her.
“He tried to kill you.”
“And if he dies before we can establish what happened, he takes the truth with him.”
Dominic hesitated.
For one dangerous moment, she thought he would ignore her.
Then he shouted toward the doorway.
“Alive! I want him alive!”
The men adjusted their approach.
Matteo caught Vittorio near the loading area. After a short struggle, two guards forced the older man to the ground and secured his hands.
The final gunshot echoed through the building.
Then everything went quiet.
Dominic stood slowly, listening for the sounds of another attack.
A guard entered.
“Boss, the rear entrance is secure. Two men are injured, but they're alive. We've recovered several phones and a case of documents.”
“Get medical help for the wounded. Nobody touches the evidence until the investigators arrive.”
The guard nodded and withdrew.
Dominic turned toward Elena.
She was standing beside the table, her face pale but composed. The document case remained open.
For a moment, he could not speak.
He had imagined protecting her by placing himself between her and every danger.
Tonight, she had entered the room because she understood the danger better than he did.
She had brought the evidence.
She had stopped him from making another irreversible decision.
And she had done it without asking whether he would approve.
“Thank you,” he finally said.
Elena looked at him.
“You're welcome.”
The words held no warmth, but they held no contempt either.
Dominic accepted that.
Matteo returned with Vittorio in custody.
“The police have been notified. Arthur Levin is on his way with the original records.”
Elena nodded.
“Then we can establish the chain of custody properly.”
Matteo gave her a weary smile.
“Your father-in-law would have been proud.”
She looked down at the letter.
“I hope he would have been relieved.”
Dominic watched her as the investigators entered the building and began documenting the scene.
For twelve years, he had believed that being the head of the Bellandi family meant carrying the burden of every decision.
He had never understood that sometimes leadership meant giving up control, listening to someone who could challenge him, and accepting that love did not make another person's life his property.
The empire was still damaged.
The attacks would require investigation. The dead could not be brought back. Luca's family could not recover twelve years of grief. The men who had followed Vittorio would have to answer for their choices.
Nothing had been repaired by one night.
May you like
But the lie at the center of the Bellandi family had finally been exposed.
And the woman Dominic had told to leave had been the one who brought it into the light.
