Chapter 5: What Remains

Chapter 5: What Remains
The mansion was scheduled for demolition.
I returned only once.
The marble foyer remained exactly as it had been.
Only cleaner.
The blood was gone.
The memories were not.
I stood in the place where my legs had broken.
For several long minutes...
I said nothing.
Workers waited respectfully outside.
Finally, I removed my wedding photograph from the wall.
The smiling bride in the picture looked like someone I had never met.
I placed the frame into an empty box.
Not to keep.
To burn.
Outside, bulldozers started their engines.
The first wall collapsed with a thunderous roar.
Then another.
Dust rose into the sky.
Piece by piece...
The prison disappeared.
Adrian walked beside me.
"Any regrets?"
I watched the final tower fall.
"Only one."
He waited.
"I wish I'd believed my own strength sooner."
He smiled.
"You do now."
May you like
I nodded.
"I do."
