CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO WAS ERASED FROM THE FAMILY Three years. Three years of silence. Three years of unanswered questions. Three years of living with a pain that nobody else could see. Lauren Sterling sat alone beside the window of a small basement apartment, watching rainwater slide down the cracked glass. The apartment was nothing like the home she once had. No marble floors. No expensive furniture. No giant windows overlooking the city. No security guards. No luxury cars waiting outside. Only a small room. A secondhand table. A broken lamp. And a wall covered with drawings made by a little girl who refused to stop believing in miracles. Sophia. Every drawing was the same. A family holding hands. A house with a bright sun above it. A father standing beside a little girl. Lauren touched one of the pictures gently. Her eyes filled with tears. “Your daddy would love these…” Her voice was barely a whisper. Then she quickly wiped her tears. Because she couldn’t allow herself to break. Not yet. Not while Sophia needed her. Not while she still had one reason to keep fighting. A knock came from the door. Lauren immediately became alert. Nobody visited them. Nobody knew where they lived. At least… That was what she thought. The knocking came again. Three slow knocks. Lauren’s heart started racing. She moved carefully toward the door. “Who is it?” A man’s voice answered. “Mrs. Sterling.” Lauren froze. Nobody had called her that in years. “Who are you?” “My name is Richard Hayes.” Her expression changed. Richard. Alexander’s company executive. A man who had attended their wedding. A man who once told her: “You and Alexander are the only people who make him smile.” Lauren stepped away from the door. “No.” Her voice became cold. “I don’t want to hear anything from the Sterling family.” “Mrs. Sterling…” “Leave.” A pause. Then Richard spoke quietly. “I found Sophia.” Everything stopped. Lauren’s breathing disappeared. “What did you say?” “I found Sophia.” Her hand moved to her mouth. Because those two words carried every fear she had buried. “Is she okay?” Richard hesitated. That hesitation terrified her. “What happened?” “She’s safe now.” Lauren closed her eyes. Safe now. Not before. “Where was she?” Richard looked down. “At the Grand Plaza Hotel.” Lauren frowned. “The hotel?” “She was searching through garbage for food.” The world became silent. Lauren’s knees weakened. “No…” Her voice cracked. “No, that can’t be true.” “I’m sorry.” Lauren grabbed the edge of the table. “I told her not to go outside.” “She said she wanted to help me.” Her tears started falling. “She thought she was protecting me.” Richard remained quiet. Then he said the words Lauren had waited three years to hear. “Alexander knows.” Lauren froze. The name she had avoided. The name she repeated in her mind every night. The man she loved. The man she believed hated her. “He knows?” “Yes.” “What did he say?” Richard looked away. “He wants to find you.” Lauren laughed softly. But there was no happiness in it. Only pain. “After three years?” “He believes you abandoned him.” Her expression became empty. “I know.” “He believed the divorce papers.” Lauren closed her eyes. “The divorce papers weren’t mine.” Richard looked shocked. “What?” Lauren turned toward him. “I never signed them.” The rain outside became louder. Like the entire world was finally listening. “Three years ago, Victoria came to my house.” Richard’s face changed. “Victoria?” Lauren nodded. “She told me Alexander was done with me.” “She said he only cared about his company.” “She said he regretted marrying me.” Richard shook his head. “That’s impossible.” Lauren smiled sadly. “I thought so too.” “She showed me documents.” “Fake divorce papers.” “She told me if I didn’t leave quietly, she would destroy Alexander’s reputation.” Richard’s expression hardened. “She threatened you?” “She threatened Sophia.” That sentence changed everything. “She said if I fought back, she would make sure I never saw my daughter again.” Richard clenched his fists. “So you left to protect Sophia.” Lauren nodded. “I thought Alexander would eventually find out.” “But he never did.” Her voice became softer. “Because Victoria made sure he didn’t.” Meanwhile… Inside the Sterling mansion… Alexander stood in his private office. The same office where he had spent thousands of nights building his empire. But tonight… The room felt unfamiliar. Because every memory had changed. Every conversation. Every decision. Every moment when he trusted his mother. He looked at old photographs. A wedding picture. Lauren smiling beside him. Sophia as a baby. Three people who had once been his entire world. His assistant entered quietly. “Mr. Sterling.” Alexander turned. “Did you find anything?” The assistant placed a folder on the desk. “We checked the financial records.” “And?” “The money wasn’t the only thing hidden.” Alexander opened the folder. Inside were documents. Property records. Medical bills. School information. His hands tightened. “What is this?” “Records connected to Sophia.” He looked through them. His daughter had changed schools four times. Medical appointments had been canceled. Insurance payments had stopped. Everything he had provided… Had disappeared. Then he saw one document. A handwritten note. From Sophia’s school. Alexander read it. "Sophia is a bright child, but she appears undernourished and withdrawn. She frequently asks if her father still loves her." His eyes became red. He slowly placed the paper down. The strongest man in the room was breaking. Because the damage wasn’t just financial. Victoria hadn’t stolen money. She had stolen memories. First birthdays. School events. Christmas mornings. Three years of his daughter’s childhood. Three years he could never get back. His phone rang. Richard. Alexander answered immediately. “Where is Lauren?” A pause. Then: “She wants to speak with you.” Alexander froze. After three years… The woman he loved. The woman he believed betrayed him. Was on the other side of the phone. “Put her through.” The call connected. Neither person spoke. For several seconds, there was only breathing. Then Lauren whispered: “Alexander…” His eyes closed. Because hearing her voice hurt more than he expected. “Lauren.” A thousand emotions passed through him. Anger. Relief. Confusion. Pain. Finally, he asked the question that haunted him for three years. “Why did you leave?” Silence. Then Lauren answered: “I didn’t.” Alexander opened his eyes. “What?” “I never left you.” His heart stopped. “I never abandoned you.” “Then why…” His voice became broken. “Why did I find divorce papers?” Lauren cried quietly. “Because your mother wanted you to.” The room went cold. Alexander said nothing. Lauren continued. “She planned everything.” “She separated us.” “She took away your daughter.” “And she made both of us believe the other one stopped caring.” Alexander gripped the phone. “Tell me everything.” Lauren took a deep breath. “Alexander…” “Yes?” “There is something else you need to know.” “What?” “The day I disappeared…” Her voice trembled. “Victoria didn’t just threaten me.” “She made sure I could never contact you.” Alexander stood completely still. “How?” Lauren whispered: “She had someone follow me.” “She took my phone.” “She destroyed every message I tried to send.” “And then…” A painful pause. “She told me you had already moved on.” Alexander’s face changed. “Moved on?” “She showed me pictures.” “Pictures of you with another woman.” His blood turned cold. Because he remembered. Three years ago. The photos. The rumors. The messages. Everything that made him believe Lauren betrayed him. But now… A horrifying possibility appeared. Maybe none of it was real. Maybe his entire life had been manipulated. Then Lauren spoke again. “Alexander…” “Yes?” “Victoria didn’t just steal your money.” “She stole our family.” Alexander looked toward the door. Outside the room… Sophia was sleeping. Finally safe. Finally home. But he knew the truth was only beginning. Because if Victoria had spent three years destroying their lives… The question was no longer: Why did she do it? The question was: How much more had she hidden? And the answer would shake the entire Sterling empire. TO BE CONTINUED… / Chapter 7 / 14

CHAPTER 8 — THE NIGHT THE HUNTERS CAME

CHAPTER 8 — THE NIGHT THE HUNTERS CAME

The second crash against the front door was louder.

The wooden frame shook.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Nobody moved.

For a few seconds, the entire room held its breath.

Because everyone understood what was happening.

The past had found them.

Eleanor Whitmore stood frozen near the table.

The woman who had spent years hiding from the shadows of the Sterling empire suddenly looked like someone who knew those shadows had finally caught up.

“They’re here.”

Her voice trembled.

Alexander looked toward the door.

“Who?”

Eleanor didn’t answer immediately.

She looked at him.

And in her eyes, Alexander saw something he had never seen before.

Fear.

Not ordinary fear.

The fear of someone who had spent years knowing exactly what powerful people were capable of.

“People who work for Victoria.”

The room became colder.

Lauren immediately stepped closer to Alexander.

“What are we going to do?”

Alexander didn’t answer.

He was thinking.

Businessman.

Father.

Son.

All three parts of him were fighting at once.

The businessman wanted information.

The son wanted answers.

But the father…

The father only wanted his family safe.

Another crash.

The door began splitting.

Richard looked through the window.

“There are two vehicles outside.”

“How many people?”

“At least four.”

Alexander looked at Eleanor.

“Do you have another exit?”

She nodded slowly.

“Through the kitchen.”

“Then we leave.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

Alexander frowned.

“What?”

“If I leave, they will keep hunting me.”

“And if you stay?”

A sad smile appeared on Eleanor’s face.

“Then they know exactly where I am.”

Alexander stared at her.

“You’re not staying behind.”

For years, Eleanor had protected the truth alone.

But tonight…

She was no longer alone.

A third crash.

The lock broke.

The door opened slightly.

Alexander moved immediately.

“Now.”

They rushed toward the kitchen.

The small house suddenly felt like a maze.

Lauren followed close behind.

Richard protected the rear.

Eleanor grabbed a small box from the kitchen counter.

Alexander noticed.

“What is that?”

“The last evidence.”

He looked at the box.

“What’s inside?”

“The reason Victoria was willing to destroy everything.”

Before he could ask more…

A voice echoed from the living room.

“Eleanor.”

Everyone froze.

A man.

Calm.

Controlled.

Not angry.

That made it worse.

“Come out.”

The voice continued.

“You’ve been hiding long enough.”

Alexander looked at Richard.

“Who is he?”

Richard whispered:

“I don’t know.”

Eleanor’s face changed.

“I do.”

She swallowed.

“Marcus Vale.”

Alexander frowned.

The name sounded familiar.

Then he remembered.

Marcus Vale.

A former Sterling Holdings security director.

A man who disappeared shortly after Jonathan Sterling’s death.

A man Victoria trusted completely.

“You’re saying he works for her?”

Eleanor nodded.

“He always did.”

The kitchen door opened quietly.

They stepped outside into the rain.

But before they could move…

A flashlight appeared.

A figure stood in the backyard.

Marcus.

Tall.

Middle-aged.

Expressionless.

“You really made this difficult, Eleanor.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

Marcus looked at him.

Then smiled slightly.

“So the son finally learned.”

Alexander’s eyes hardened.

“Learned what?”

“That his perfect family was never perfect.”

The words irritated Alexander.

“You don’t know anything about my family.”

Marcus laughed quietly.

“I know more than you.”

Lauren stepped forward.

“You helped Victoria.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Mrs. Sterling.”

Lauren’s face tightened.

“You destroyed our lives.”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Your lives were destroyed because powerful people make difficult choices.”

Alexander stared.

“You sound exactly like my mother.”

Marcus smiled.

“Because she was right.”

The answer was disgusting.

Alexander felt his anger rising.

“You think what she did was right?”

Marcus looked toward the house.

“Your father was going to ruin everything.”

Alexander froze.

“There it is.”

He stepped closer.

“The same excuse.”

Marcus continued:

“Jonathan Sterling was brilliant.”

“But he was weak.”

“He cared too much about morality.”

Alexander’s voice became cold.

“And Victoria didn’t?”

“No.”

Marcus answered.

“She understood reality.”

The rain fell harder.

Alexander stared at him.

“You helped cover up my father’s death.”

Marcus said nothing.

That silence was enough.

Then Alexander spoke.

“You were there.”

Marcus looked at him.

“The night he died.”

Another silence.

“You were there.”

Marcus finally smiled.

“You’re more like your father than you realize.”

Alexander moved forward.

But Richard stopped him.

“Not here.”

Because Marcus wasn’t alone.

More lights appeared in the distance.

More people.

They were surrounded.

Marcus looked at Alexander.

“Give me Eleanor.”

“No.”

“Then you’ll make this worse.”

Alexander laughed.

“You threatened my daughter.”

Marcus’s expression changed slightly.

“You know about that?”

Alexander’s eyes became dangerous.

“You thought I wouldn’t find out?”

For the first time, Marcus looked uncertain.

Only briefly.

But Alexander saw it.

“You don’t work for Victoria anymore, do you?”

Marcus froze.

Lauren looked confused.

Alexander continued.

“You’re afraid of her.”

A pause.

“You’re not here to protect her.”

“You’re here because she knows something about you.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Careful.”

Alexander smiled coldly.

“Your boss taught me something.”

“What?”

“People always reveal their weakness when they’re afraid.”

The two men stared at each other.

Then suddenly…

A gunshot exploded through the night.

Everyone dropped.

The bullet hit the wooden fence.

Chaos erupted.

Marcus looked shocked.

“Everyone move!”

Not toward Alexander.

Not toward Eleanor.

Away.

Because another group had arrived.

A different group.

Richard shouted:

“There are more people!”

Alexander grabbed Lauren’s hand.

“Stay behind me.”

They moved through the darkness.

Eleanor held the evidence box tightly.

Then a car appeared at the end of the road.

The headlights illuminated everything.

And behind the wheel…

Was someone Alexander never expected to see.

Victoria Sterling.

She stepped out of the vehicle.

Perfectly dressed.

Calm.

Almost peaceful.

As if she wasn’t standing in the middle of a war she created.

Alexander stared.

His own mother had come personally.

Victoria looked at him.

Then at Eleanor.

Then at the box in her hands.

And for the first time…

She stopped pretending.

“You should have stayed away from the past, Alexander.”

The rain poured between them.

Alexander answered:

“You should have told me the truth thirty years ago.”

Victoria looked at him sadly.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

Her eyes moved toward Eleanor.

“I wasn’t protecting my power.”

Alexander waited.

“I was protecting you.”

Everyone went silent.

Because Victoria’s expression wasn’t arrogance.

It was desperation.

And then she said the sentence nobody expected.

“Your father wasn’t killed because he discovered my crimes.”

Alexander froze.

“Then why?”

Victoria looked directly at him.

“Because he discovered someone else’s.”

The world seemed to stop.

Alexander stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Victoria took a step closer.

“Jonathan was not investigating me.”

“He was investigating the person who betrayed him.”

Alexander’s heart raced.

“Who?”

Victoria looked at Eleanor.

Then at the box.

And whispered:

“The person who caused your father’s death…”

“Was standing beside him that night.”

Eleanor’s face turned pale.

Alexander looked between them.

Because suddenly…

The woman who had been the victim for thirty years…

Might not have been telling the entire truth.

The last witness.

The hidden evidence.

The family betrayal.

Everything was changing again.

And Alexander realized something terrifying.

Finding the truth was only the beginning.

Because now he had to discover…

May you like

Who was lying?
