Chapter 4: The Last Promise

Chapter 4: The Last Promise

Three days later...

The hospital room is silent.

Machines breathe where she no longer can.

The twins refuse to leave her bedside.

Their father sits beside them.

Still holding the old toy car.

The doctor walks in.

His expression says everything.

"I'm sorry."

"There isn't much time."

The twins break.

Their father doesn't.

Not yet.

He takes her hand.

"I failed you once."

His voice shakes.

"I won't fail them."

She smiles.

The weakest smile imaginable.

"I know."

She reaches toward the toy car one final time.

"Keep this..."

She whispers to the twins.

"So you'll always remember..."

"...love always finds its way home."

Her hand slips from his.

The monitor releases one long, endless tone.

BEEEEEEEEEEP.

Silence fills the room.

Months pass.

The toy car now sits inside a glass case in their new home.

The engraving remains.

"To my twins... Dad."

Every birthday, the father places fresh flowers beneath the family photograph.

Not because he lost everything.

But because, on an ordinary afternoon...

Two little boys tried to sell a toy.

And instead...

May you like

They found their father.

The End.
