Chapter 2: The Witness Nobody Knew Existed No one answered. The rooftop remained frozen beneath the Manhattan skyline. Every phone stayed raised. Recording. Streaming. Capturing the moment Damian Reed's empire began to crack. The voice came again. "I asked a question." The crowd slowly parted. An elderly man stepped forward. Gray suit. Silver cane. Calm eyes that had seen far too much. Damian recognized him instantly. His face tightened. "Arthur..." Arthur Hale. Former chief of security at the Ashcroft Grand Hotel. The hotel that had burned twenty years earlier. Everyone believed he had died shortly after the investigation. Instead... He had disappeared. Arthur removed a worn leather envelope from inside his jacket. "I've carried this for twenty years." He placed it gently on the table. Inside... A charred hotel master key. Half-burned photographs. A maintenance log. And one security badge. Victoria Carter. Temporary hotel manager. Sophia stared at her sister. "You worked there?" Victoria couldn't answer. Arthur finally looked at Emily. "I always wondered if you'd remember." Emily quietly nodded. "I remember the smoke." The rooftop fell silent again. "I remember Mommy screaming." She paused. "And I remember someone locking the door." Damian's breathing became uneven. Arthur slowly opened the final photograph. Room 814. Taken minutes before the fire. Sophia stood beside Emily. Damian stood beside Victoria. And behind the curtain... A third shadow. Someone whose face had been carefully cut out. Arthur looked directly at Damian. "You didn't start the fire." Another pause. "But you made sure the truth burned with it." / Chapter 1 / 2

Chapter 3: The Recording That Changed Everything

Victoria collapsed into a chair.

"I didn't mean to kill anyone..."

The words escaped before she realized what she had admitted.

Gasps rippled across the rooftop.

Phones captured everything.

Damian closed his eyes.

"It's over..."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"It starts now."

He reached into the envelope one last time.

A tiny cassette tape.

Black.

Dusty.

Labeled only with three numbers.

Sophia frowned.

"A tape?"

Arthur smiled sadly.

"The hotel's emergency recording system."

"I found it after the fire."

"I never had the courage to play it."

Emily looked at the cassette.

"I know what's on it."

Everyone stared at her.

"You hear Mommy crying."

"You hear Victoria pushing her."

Then Emily looked at Damian.

"And you hear Daddy."

Damian slowly raised his head.

Emily's voice remained calm.

"He said..."

"'Lock the door.'"

Victoria burst into tears.

"I only wanted the company..."

"I never wanted the child to survive..."

Sophia covered her mouth.

Damian whispered,

"We were supposed to scare her..."

Arthur interrupted.

"But someone else started the fire."

Silence.

Every person on the rooftop looked at him.

"There was a third person in Room 814."

"The one whose face was cut from the photograph."
