Chapter 13: The Final Confession Of Maria Torino

Chapter 13: The Final Confession Of Maria Torino

The city slept.

But Vincent Torino did not.

Chicago had always been a city of secrets.

Behind every bright building was a dark room.

Behind every successful man was a story nobody knew.

And behind every family…

was a truth someone had buried.

Vincent drove alone through empty streets.

No guards.

No weapons from his organization.

No army following behind him.

Only himself.

For thirty years, Vincent had surrounded himself with people.

Men who would die for him.

Men who feared him.

Men who followed his orders without question.

But tonight, for the first time in decades, he understood something.

A person could stand at the center of an empire…

and still be completely alone.

His phone remained silent.

The last message from Daniel Cross was still there.

"If you want the truth about Maria's death, come alone."

A trap.

Obviously.

Vincent knew traps.

He had built many himself.

But this trap was different.

Because the bait was not money.

Not power.

Not revenge.

It was Maria.

The location was an abandoned theater on the edge of Chicago.

The same theater where Richard had revealed the first pieces of the truth.

The same place where Vincent realized his entire life was built on secrets.

The entrance was open.

Too open.

Vincent stepped inside.

The smell of dust filled the air.

Old memories.

Old ghosts.

“Daniel.”

His voice echoed.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then footsteps came from the balcony.

Daniel Cross appeared.

Older.

Calm.

Almost peaceful.

“You came.”

Vincent looked up.

“You knew I would.”

Daniel smiled.

“Yes.”

“Everyone thinks they know me.”

Vincent walked forward.

“They’re usually wrong.”

Daniel nodded.

“Not Maria.”

The name immediately changed Vincent’s expression.

“Don’t say her name.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You still love her.”

A pause.

“After thirty years.”

Vincent said nothing.

Daniel smiled sadly.

“That is why she chose you.”

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“Chosen me for what?”

Daniel walked down slowly.

“To carry the truth.”

Daniel stopped several feet away.

“You want to know who killed Maria?”

“Yes.”

“You want to know who betrayed her?”

“Yes.”

“You want to know why everyone lied to you?”

Vincent’s voice became colder.

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then listen carefully.”

A pause.

“Because Maria knew the truth before all of us.”

Vincent frowned.

“What truth?”

“That the Torino family was never the real power.”

Daniel looked around the abandoned theater.

“The Torino family was only a piece on a larger board.”

“The Council?”

Daniel nodded.

“But even they were not the beginning.”

Vincent stared.

“Then what was?”

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Your mother.”

Vincent’s expression changed.

Again.

Isabella.

Every road led back to her.

“My mother?”

Daniel nodded.

“She created the first alliance.”

“With the Council?”

“Yes.”

Vincent shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel continued.

“She believed she could control them.”

A bitter smile.

“Everyone who joins that world believes the same thing.”

Vincent remembered Isabella’s confession.

Fear.

Power.

Control.

The same cycle.

Daniel continued:

“Your mother wanted to build something that could protect the Torino family forever.”

“And Maria discovered it.”

“Yes.”

“What did Maria discover?”

Daniel looked toward the empty stage.

“She discovered Isabella had created a system where no Torino could ever leave.”

Vincent frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means every generation would repeat the same story.”

Daniel’s voice became darker.

“One person would seek power.”

“Another would seek freedom.”

“And everyone they loved would become a weapon.”

Vincent felt a chill.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Maria became a weapon against him.

Sophie became a weapon against him.

Elena became a target because of him.

The cycle.

Daniel reached into his coat.

Vincent immediately prepared himself.

But Daniel did not pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small cassette tape.

Old.

Worn.

Vincent recognized it.

Another message.

Another piece Maria left behind.

“She recorded this the night before she died.”

Vincent froze.

“You had this?”

Daniel nodded.

“I was supposed to deliver it to you.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

Daniel looked away.

“Because I was a coward.”

The answer surprised Vincent.

Daniel continued.

“I thought keeping you alive meant keeping you away from the truth.”

A pause.

“I was wrong.”

Vincent stared.

“Play it.”

Daniel handed him the cassette player.

Vincent pressed the button.

Static.

Then…

Maria’s voice.

Again.

After thirty years.

“Vincent.”

His eyes closed.

“Please forgive me.”

A pause.

“I know you will be angry.”

Her voice trembled.

“But anger is easier than pain.”

Vincent stood frozen.

Maria continued.

“If you are hearing this, then I failed.”

A quiet breath.

“But maybe I didn’t.”

The recording crackled.

“Maybe you finally understand.”

Vincent listened.

Every word.

Every second.

“Vincent…”

“I need you to know something.”

“You were never the Torino heir because of blood.”

A pause.

“You were the heir because you were the only person who could end this.”

Vincent’s eyes opened.

“End what?”

Maria continued:

“The cycle.”

Silence.

“The hatred.”

“The revenge.”

“The belief that power is more important than people.”

Her voice became softer.

“You spent your life trying to become strong.”

A pause.

“But you were always strongest when you cared.”

Vincent lowered his head.

Because Maria knew.

She always knew.

The recording continued.

“There is one more thing.”

Vincent looked up.

“Isabella was not the only person who made mistakes.”

A pause.

“Richard was not the only person who betrayed me.”

Vincent frowned.

“Daniel was not the only one who hid the truth.”

The voice became quieter.

“Neither was I.”

Vincent froze.

“What?”

Maria continued:

“I knew I was walking into danger.”

“I knew someone wanted me gone.”

“But I made a choice.”

A pause.

“I chose to protect Vincent.”

His breathing stopped.

“Because if they destroyed me…”

A quiet crack in her voice.

“I knew they would destroy the last good part of him.”

The recording ended.

The theater became silent.

Vincent stood motionless.

Thirty years.

He thought Maria died because someone took her away.

But now he understood.

Maria chose him.

Even in her final moments.

She chose him.

Daniel watched quietly.

“You see?”

Vincent looked at him.

“See what?”

“She didn’t die because she was weak.”

Daniel’s voice softened.

“She died because she loved you.”

For years, Vincent believed love was the reason he suffered.

Now he understood.

Love was the reason he survived.

Suddenly, Vincent’s phone rang.

Tony.

He answered.

“What happened?”

Tony’s voice was urgent.

“Boss.”

A pause.

“We found Daniel’s people.”

Vincent looked at Daniel.

“And?”

Tony hesitated.

“They’re not working for Daniel.”

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Tony continued:

“They’re working for someone else.”

A pause.

“Someone who has been watching everything.”

Vincent felt a cold sensation.

“Who?”

Tony’s voice lowered.

“Someone inside your house.”

Vincent became still.

“What do you mean?”

Tony answered:

“Someone from Elena’s security team.”

Vincent looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Because even he seemed surprised.

Then the lights inside the theater suddenly went out.

A gunshot echoed.

Daniel fell.

Vincent moved instantly.

He caught him before he hit the ground.

Blood spread across Daniel’s shirt.

“Who shot you?”

Daniel struggled to breathe.

His hand grabbed Vincent’s arm.

“Vincent…”

A whisper.

“The enemy…”

A pause.

“…was never outside the family.”

Vincent looked into the darkness.

A figure disappeared through the back exit.

And then Daniel said his final words:

May you like

“The person closest to Sophie…”

“is the one who wants her dead.”
