Chapter 2 The Waiter Who Shouldn't Exist
Chapter 2
The Waiter Who Shouldn't Exist
Emma's fingers tightened around the phone until her knuckles turned white.
DELETE THE BACKUP OR YOUR LITTLE BROTHER DIES NEXT.
The words blurred as tears threatened to fill her eyes.
No.
Not Oliver.
Anyone but Oliver.
He was only twelve.
He still believed monsters lived under beds instead of behind expensive smiles.
Emma forced herself not to look toward the waiter again.
Whoever had sent the message wanted to know if she had noticed.
She wouldn't give them that satisfaction.
Instead, she slipped the phone back into her apron as if nothing had happened.
Across the ballroom, Adrian Blackwell stood motionless while forensic technicians carefully collected every shard of the shattered crystal glass.
The laboratory director arrived carrying a portable evidence case.
"No one touch the liquid," Adrian ordered.
"I want a full toxicology report immediately."
"Yes, sir."
The director knelt beside the orange stain spreading across the white marble floor.
Using sterile swabs, he collected every remaining drop.
Even the smallest trace could reveal the truth.
Vivienne Ashcroft watched calmly.
Too calmly.
Emma noticed something strange.
Most innocent people became angry when falsely accused.
Most guilty people became nervous when evidence appeared.
Vivienne seemed...
Patient.
As though she already knew what the test would reveal.
That realization sent another chill down Emma's spine.
At the far end of the ballroom, the head of security approached Adrian.
"Sir."
"What is it?"
"We've checked every exit."
"No one has left."
"Good."
"There is... another problem."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"The waiter."
"What waiter?"
"The one assigned to Table One."
"The one serving your drink."
The security chief looked uncomfortable.
"We can't find him."
A ripple of unease spread through the nearby guests.
"What do you mean you can't find him?" Adrian asked.
"He vanished."
Security officers immediately pulled up the ballroom's staffing records.
The event manager frowned.
"That's impossible."
She scrolled through the employee list once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then looked up, confused.
"We never assigned a waiter to Table One."
"What?"
"There were supposed to be six servers."
"We only hired six."
"But the footage clearly shows seven."
The room fell silent.
Emma remembered him vividly.
Tall.
Perfect posture.
White gloves.
Silver serving tray.
He had poured the orange juice himself.
Hundreds of guests had seen him.
Yet according to every employment record...
He had never existed.
"Show me every camera."
Adrian's voice carried absolute authority.
Within moments, security monitors illuminated one wall of the ballroom.
Camera after camera replayed the evening.
Entrance.
Lobby.
Kitchen.
Hallway.
Ballroom.
Loading dock.
The mysterious waiter appeared repeatedly.
Serving drinks.
Opening doors.
Smiling politely.
Completely ordinary.
Until they tracked him backward.
At 7:18 PM...
He entered the ballroom carrying empty glasses.
They rewound farther.
7:16 PM.
Nothing.
7:15 PM.
Nothing.
7:14 PM.
Nothing.
He simply...
Appeared.
No camera showed him entering the building.
No camera showed him changing clothes.
No camera showed him speaking to staff.
It was as though he had stepped directly out of thin air.
The security chief swallowed hard.
"Sir..."
"The cameras covering Corridor C went offline."
"When?"
"Exactly forty-three seconds."
"During that outage..."
"...the waiter first appeared."
Adrian stared at the screen.
Forty-three seconds.
Someone had deliberately blinded the security system.
Not long enough to attract attention.
Just long enough for one man to enter unnoticed.
Professional.
Planned.
Expensive.
Emma's heartbeat quickened.
The message.
The waiter.
The missing records.
This wasn't one desperate killer.
This was an operation.
Months...
Perhaps years...
In the making.
"Run facial recognition."
Adrian ordered.
The technician immediately uploaded the waiter's face into the system.
Searching...
Government records...
Employee databases...
Passport files...
Driver's licenses...
Military archives...
Nothing.
"No matches."
Adrian frowned.
"Again."
The technician tried international databases.
Interpol.
Border control.
Corporate employee registries.
Still nothing.
"It can't be."
"No human has zero records."
Emma whispered,
"Unless he isn't using his own face."
Everyone looked toward her.
She took a shaky breath.
"My brother loves detective movies."
"He always says..."
"...professionals wear other people's identities."
Silence.
Then Adrian nodded slowly.
"Find every guest photo posted tonight."
Within minutes dozens of social media images appeared.
Guests posing beneath chandeliers.
Couples smiling.
Business partners shaking hands.
The mysterious waiter stood in the background of several photographs.
Always slightly out of focus.
Always looking away.
Never facing the camera directly.
He knew exactly where every lens was.
Suddenly the laboratory director returned.
His expression had changed.
Adrian saw it immediately.
"What did you find?"
The man hesitated.
Then opened a sealed evidence bag.
Inside lay a testing strip.
Bright crimson.
"It contains poison."
The ballroom erupted.
Gasps.
Screams.
People stepped away from the evidence instinctively.
"What poison?"
"Aconitine."
Several doctors among the guests immediately went pale.
One whispered,
"My God..."
Another finished the sentence.
"Less than two milligrams can stop a healthy heart."
The laboratory director nodded grimly.
"This concentration was more than enough."
"If Mr. Blackwell had taken even one sip..."
"...he likely would have collapsed within minutes."
Emma closed her eyes.
She had been right.
She really had saved his life.
Adrian slowly turned toward Vivienne.
"This isn't fabricated."
She met his gaze without blinking.
"I never touched your drink."
"The video says otherwise."
"Videos can lie."
"The poison cannot."
She smiled again.
"But can you prove I put it there?"
Adrian said nothing.
Because she was right.
The footage showed a hand.
Not a face.
The poison proved attempted murder.
Not the murderer.
Then an elderly voice echoed from the back of the ballroom.
"I can."
Everyone turned.
An old man slowly walked forward using an ebony cane.
Silver hair.
Perfect tuxedo.
Calm eyes.
Emma had noticed him earlier sitting quietly alone.
No one seemed to know his name.
Vivienne did.
The moment she saw him...
Her face lost every trace of color.
"Impossible..."
she whispered.
"You..."
The old man stopped only a few feet away.
He looked directly at Adrian.
"I know exactly who ordered this murder."
He reached into his jacket.
Security instantly drew their weapons.
"Hands where I can see them!"
The old man ignored them.
Slowly...
Carefully...
He removed a faded photograph.
Nearly thirty years old.
He handed it to Adrian.
It showed three people standing together.
A much younger Adrian's father.
The old man.
And...
Vivienne's father.
Written across the back, in faded blue ink, were eight chilling words.
One survives. Two must disappear before inheritance begins.
Emma felt the room tilt beneath her feet.
This wasn't about one poisoned glass.
It had started decades ago.
May you like
And tonight...
The past had finally returned to collect its debt.
