CHAPTER 6: THE SECRET OF ROSIE’S MOTHER

CHAPTER 6: THE SECRET OF ROSIE’S MOTHER
The envelope sat on the table.
Nobody touched it.
It looked ordinary.
A simple white envelope.
No name.
No address.
No warning.
But everyone in the room knew it carried something dangerous.
Because some secrets did not need to look frightening.
Some secrets were frightening because they had survived for too long.
Ethan stood there, staring at it.
His hand slowly moved forward.
Then stopped.
For years, he had built walls around one part of his life.
A part nobody in the family talked about.
Rosie’s mother.
Claire.
The woman who had changed his entire world.
The woman who had given him the greatest gift of his life.
And the woman who was no longer there.
Margaret watched him carefully.
“Ethan…”
He looked back.
“What?”
Her expression was filled with sadness.
“Maybe you don’t have to open it tonight.”
Ethan looked at her.
After everything that happened, that was the first time she sounded like a mother.
Not a person protecting a family image.
Not someone trying to keep peace.
Just a mother worried about her son.
But Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
He picked up the envelope.
“I spent years avoiding the truth.”
His fingers tightened around it.
“And my daughter paid the price for that.”
Nobody responded.
Because everyone knew.
The past had finally caught up.
Ethan opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
His breathing stopped.
It was Claire.
Young.
Smiling.
Holding a baby Rosie.
A photo he had never seen before.
On the back, there was writing.
She was never supposed to know.
Ethan’s face changed.
“What?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What does it mean?”
Ethan turned the photo around.
Nobody understood.
Then Richard saw it.
And the color disappeared from his face.
“What?”
Ethan looked at him.
“You know something.”
Richard didn’t answer.
“Dad.”
The old man sat down.
His hands trembled.
“I hoped this day would never come.”
Ethan’s voice became colder.
“You keep saying that.”
A pause.
“But every secret in this family has one thing in common.”
He looked around.
“Everyone hoped I would never find out.”
Richard lowered his head.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Ethan laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that.”
He placed the photo on the table.
“Protect me from what?”
Richard looked at Rosie.
Then away.
“From the truth about Claire.”
The room became silent.
Even Bethany looked confused.
“Claire?”
She whispered.
“What does Claire have to do with Victor?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Everything.”
Ethan froze.
“What do you mean?”
Richard took a deep breath.
“Your relationship with Claire was not an accident.”
The words hit him instantly.
“What?”
Richard continued.
“When you met her, Victor already knew who she was.”
Ethan stared.
“No.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
The room felt smaller.
“He knew Claire before you.”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“How?”
Richard looked toward the window.
“Because Claire was investigating him.”
Everyone froze.
Daniel frowned.
“Investigating?”
Richard nodded.
“She was a financial analyst. She discovered Victor’s illegal accounts years ago.”
Ethan felt his stomach twist.
Claire had never told him that.
“She was trying to expose him.”
Richard continued.
“But Victor found out.”
The pieces started moving.
Claire.
Victor.
The threats.
Rosie.
All connected.
Ethan looked at the photo again.
“Then why did she marry me?”
Richard answered quietly.
“Because she loved you.”
The words hurt.
Because Ethan knew that.
He had never doubted Claire’s love.
But now he wondered how much danger she had carried alone.
“She wanted to tell me.”
Richard nodded.
“She tried.”
“When?”
Richard hesitated.
“The night before the accident.”
Ethan went completely still.
The accident.
The word nobody liked to say.
The night Claire died.
The night that changed everything.
“You knew?”
Richard looked at him.
“I knew she was afraid.”
Ethan’s eyes filled with anger.
“And you said nothing?”
Richard’s voice broke.
“I thought I could handle it.”
The sentence was painfully familiar.
Because Daniel had said almost the same thing.
Because everyone had believed they could control something much bigger than them.
Ethan stepped back.
“How many people knew?”
Nobody answered.
That silence was enough.
His eyes moved around the room.
“Who knew?”
Margaret whispered:
“I knew she was investigating something.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Mom?”
She cried.
“She asked me to keep Rosie safe if anything happened.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Margaret looked at him.
“She was afraid Victor would come after you.”
The room became silent.
“She told me that if anything happened to her, I had to make sure Rosie stayed away from people connected to Victor.”
Ethan stared.
“Then why did you let Bethany near her?”
Margaret broke down.
“I didn’t know.”
Ethan looked away.
Because he wanted to believe her.
But trust had become something fragile.
Something everyone had broken.
Daniel suddenly picked up the photo.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned.
He pointed at the corner.
“There’s a date.”
Ethan looked.
The photograph was taken one week before Claire died.
Daniel frowned.
“Why would David have this?”
Ethan looked at the envelope.
There was something else inside.
A folded piece of paper.
He opened it.
Only one sentence.
The accident was not an accident.
Nobody spoke.
The room seemed to stop.
Ethan read it again.
Then again.
His hands began shaking.
Because for years, he had lived with one belief.
Claire was gone because of fate.
A terrible accident.
A tragedy nobody could change.
But now…
Someone was telling him the truth was different.
Daniel looked at him.
“Ethan…”
He couldn’t answer.
His mind was somewhere else.
Back to that night.
The phone call.
The hospital.
The doctor’s expression.
The empty chair beside him.
Everything.
All those years of grief.
All those years of raising Rosie alone.
And now one sentence had reopened the wound.
Bethany whispered:
“Victor killed her?”
Richard looked terrified.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
Richard’s face was pale.
“Victor didn’t kill Claire.”
A pause.
“He tried.”
The room froze.
Ethan slowly turned.
“Then who did?”
Richard looked toward the hallway.
Toward the place where David had disappeared.
And he whispered the answer.
“The person who benefited most from her death.”
Nobody moved.
Because everyone understood.
The person who had been hiding in plain sight.
The person who had been smiling beside Rosie.
The person who had helped create the nightmare.
David.
Daniel immediately checked his phone.
“There’s something else.”
He looked shocked.
“What?”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“I found the original recording.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“What recording?”
Daniel looked up.
“The one from the night Claire died.”
The room went silent.
“Where did you find it?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Hidden in the cloud account connected to the old security system.”
Ethan felt cold.
Because that meant one thing.
Someone had recorded the night Claire died.
Someone had kept the evidence.
Someone had waited years.
Daniel pressed play.
The screen turned black.
Then a familiar voice appeared.
Claire’s voice.
Whispering.
“If you’re watching this…”
A pause.
“Then they already came for Rosie.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
Because his dead wife was speaking.
And she knew.
She knew someone would come for their daughter.
The video continued.
And the first words Claire said next changed everything.
“Ethan… if you love our daughter…”
May you like
A long pause.
“Do not trust anyone in your family.”
