Chapter 3: The Truth on the Screen

Chapter 3: The Truth on the Screen
Twenty minutes later...
Every important guest remained inside the ballroom.
Police officers stood beside every exit.
The hotel manager rolled a large monitor into the center of the room.
No one spoke.
The recording began.
First...
The ballroom before the ceremony.
Servers arranging flowers.
Photographers adjusting lights.
Children laughing.
Then...
There was Sophie.
Skipping beside the dance floor.
Completely alone.
Seconds later...
Preston entered the frame.
He looked around.
Checked both hallways.
Reached into his tuxedo pocket.
Pulled out his titanium iPhone.
Walked directly toward Sophie's folded denim jacket hanging on a chair.
Slipped the phone inside the pocket.
Then calmly walked away.
The room froze.
Someone gasped.
Another guest whispered...
"My God..."
The video kept playing.
Minutes later...
The public accusation.
The fake search.
The triumphant smile as he "found" the phone.
Then...
The moment no one wanted to see again.
Evelyn stepped in front of Sophie.
She said one word.
"No."
Preston's face twisted.
He ripped the heavy oak menu board from its stand.
Raised it high.
And struck an eight-year-old child.
The crack echoed through the ballroom speakers.
Even louder than before.
The recording ended.
Silence.
The kind that crushes people.
One police officer slowly turned toward Preston.
"You're under arrest."
No one defended him.
Not his friends.
Not his new wife.
Not even his parents.
Because truth...
May you like
Needs only one witness.
A camera never forgets.
