Chapter 3: The Empty Chair

Chapter 3: The Empty Chair
Saturday arrived with bright skies.
Ohio couldn't have picked a prettier day.
I wasn't at the church.
Instead, I drove to the community center where the trustees of Linda's Housing Foundation were holding their first annual meeting.
There were veterans.
Widows.
Retired teachers.
A grandmother raising three grandchildren after her daughter died.
People I'd never met.
People who smiled when they heard Linda's name.
One elderly woman held my hand and said,
"My husband passed away last year."
"I would've lost my home without this program."
I couldn't answer.
Because Linda would've loved hearing those words.
At almost the exact moment Ashley was walking down the aisle...
I was watching another family receive keys to a safe place to live.
Somewhere across town, the wedding photographer was probably wondering why one chair in the front row remained empty.
People whispered.
Some assumed I'd refused to attend.
Others guessed we'd argued.
Only Ashley knew the truth.
She had chosen the empty chair herself.
That evening, my phone buzzed.
A photograph arrived.
Ashley in her wedding dress.
Trevor beside her.
Hundreds of smiling guests.
And there...
three rows from the front...
an untouched seat with my name printed on it.
No message accompanied the picture.
Just the image.
For several minutes, I stared at it.
Then I noticed something unexpected.
Ashley wasn't smiling.
Not really.
Her eyes looked swollen.
Her expression looked distant.

For the first time since all this began...
I wondered if regret had finally arrived.
