Chapter 3: A Voice From the Past

Chapter 3: A Voice From the Past
That night Mariana searched through old family albums stored in the attic.
She found photographs spanning decades.
Birthdays.
Vacations.
Business celebrations.
In every picture before Santiago married Camila...
Doña Consuelo smiled.
After the wedding...
Her smile disappeared.
Then Mariana discovered another envelope.
Inside was an old cassette tape labeled in faded handwriting.
For Santiago. Only if something happens to me.
She stared at it for several seconds.
Someone had hidden it years ago.
She borrowed an old cassette player from the gardener.
Static crackled.
Then a fragile voice filled the room.
It was Doña Consuelo.
"If you're hearing this..."
"It means I failed."
"I don't trust Camila."
Mariana froze.
The recording continued.
"She doesn't love this family."
"She loves what belongs to this family."
A loud knock interrupted the tape.
Mariana quickly switched it off.
Outside stood the mansion's longtime driver.
His face had gone pale.
"You need to leave," he whispered.
"Camila fired the last two housekeepers."
"They both asked too many questions."
Before Mariana could answer...
The driver handed her a folded note.
Then he hurried away.

Inside were only six handwritten words.
She killed before. Don't trust anyone.
