Chapter 4: The Courtroom

Chapter 4: The Courtroom
The courtroom overflowed with reporters, attorneys, and curious spectators.
Carmen entered wearing pearls and an expression of complete confidence.
Javier avoided looking at Sofia.
Their lawyers insisted the injuries resulted from an emotional breakdown.
They claimed Sofia had fallen repeatedly after drinking too much champagne.
The judge listened patiently.
Then the prosecution began.
First came the medical records.
Then the forensic photographs.
Then the security footage showing Carmen and the six women entering the suite.
Next came the recovered text messages.
Finally...
The cloud video.
The courtroom fell silent as Carmen's own voice filled the speakers.
"Hit her again."
"She'll sign eventually."
Javier closed his eyes.
His attorney slowly lowered his head.
No explanation remained.
When asked to testify, Sofia walked calmly to the witness stand.
She did not cry.
She did not raise her voice.
She simply described every slap.
Every threat.
Every moment Javier chose silence.
When she finished, the room remained completely still.
The judge looked toward Carmen.
"Do you wish to explain this recording?"
For the first time in years, Carmen had nothing to say.
The verdict came two weeks later.
Carmen and the women who participated in the assault were convicted on multiple felony charges related to conspiracy, assault, and attempted coercion.
Javier was convicted for his role in facilitating the crime and attempting to destroy evidence.
As the sentences were read, Sofia quietly squeezed my hand.

Justice had not erased the scars.
But it had finally acknowledged them.
