CHAPTER 4 THE SECRET ACCOUNT

CHAPTER 4
THE SECRET ACCOUNT
The first rule Harrison Cole learned as a lawyer was simple:
People lie when they are afraid.
The second rule was even more important:
Follow the money.
Because emotions could be manipulated.
Stories could be changed.
Memories could become unreliable.
But money always left a trail.
Every transaction.
Every transfer.
Every hidden payment.
Eventually, every secret surfaced.
And Harrison intended to find every single one.
Two days after the anonymous phone call, Harrison sat inside a private conference room overlooking Philadelphia.
The city moved below him.
Cars.
People.
Businesses.
Thousands of lives continuing as if nothing had changed.
But inside that room, a war was beginning.
Ethan Brooks placed several files on the table.
“We traced the offshore accounts.”
Harrison looked up.
“And?”
Ethan opened the first file.
“Richard Harrington moved money through three shell companies.”
He pointed at the documents.
“Those companies transferred funds into an account registered under a trust.”
Harrison studied the name.
“Who owns the trust?”
Ethan paused.
“That’s the problem.”
Harrison narrowed his eyes.
“What problem?”
“The ownership records were sealed.”
Harrison leaned back.
“Impossible.”
“Not impossible.”
Ethan tapped the file.
“Expensive.”
A silence followed.
Because Harrison understood exactly what that meant.
Someone had spent a lot of money to make sure nobody looked too closely.
“Find the bank.”
“We already did.”
“And?”
Ethan looked at him.
“It’s a private institution in Switzerland.”
Harrison stared at the documents.
“Who authorized the account?”
Ethan slid another page across the table.
A signature.
One name.
Harrison read it.
And his expression changed.
Charles Kensington.
The connection was no longer a theory.
It was a chain.
Richard Harrington.
Vanessa Kensington.
Charles Kensington.
The hidden money.
The fake companies.
The attempted destruction of Khloe.
Everything connected.
But Harrison knew something.
Connections were not enough.
In court, suspicion was worthless.
He needed proof.
Proof that could survive against people with unlimited resources.
Proof that could destroy an empire.
At the hospital, Khloe sat by the window holding her newborn daughter.
The baby was tiny.
Fragile.
Perfect.
For the first time in months, Khloe felt something close to peace.
Her daughter was real.
Alive.
Safe.
She looked down at the small face sleeping in her arms.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
A tear touched her cheek.
“I should have known.”
A voice came from the doorway.
“You should not blame yourself.”
Khloe looked up.
Harrison stood there.
She smiled faintly.
“You always say that.”
“Because it’s true.”
Khloe looked back at the baby.
“Harry…”
“Yes?”
“What happens now?”
Harrison knew what she meant.
Not just legally.
Emotionally.
Her entire life had changed.
The husband she loved had betrayed her.
The future she imagined no longer existed.
“You rebuild.”
Khloe looked at him.
“What if I don’t know how?”
Harrison walked closer.
“Then you start with one thing.”
“What?”
“Protecting your daughter.”
Khloe looked down.
“She deserves better than this.”
Harrison nodded.
“She does.”
A pause.
“And so do you.”
That evening, Richard Harrington made his first public appearance since the courthouse incident.
The cameras were waiting.
Reporters surrounded him outside his company headquarters.
“Mr. Harrington, is your wife accusing you of financial fraud?”
“Is Vanessa Kensington involved?”
“Did you know she was going to attack your wife?”
Richard ignored every question.
His public relations team had prepared his statement.
He stepped toward the microphones.
“I want everyone to understand that this situation has been misunderstood.”
The reporters leaned closer.
“My wife and I are dealing with a private family matter.”
A practiced expression.
A controlled voice.
“I love Khloe, and my priority has always been the wellbeing of my family.”
Then one reporter asked:
“Mr. Harrington, if you love your wife, why were you standing beside Vanessa Kensington immediately after your wife was injured?”
Richard froze.
Only for a second.
But cameras caught it.
That tiny hesitation.
That tiny crack.
And Harrison saw it later.
Every second.
Every movement.
Every reaction.
He watched the interview from his office.
Ethan stood beside him.
“He’s trying to control the narrative.”
Harrison nodded.
“He always has.”
“He thinks public opinion will protect him.”
Harrison looked at the screen.
“No.”
A pause.
“He thinks money will protect him.”
Later that night, Harrison received another message.
This time, from an encrypted number.
One photo.
No words.
He opened it.
His face immediately changed.
The picture showed a hospital employee entering Khloe’s floor.
A man wearing medical scrubs.
Walking toward her room.
Time stamp:
2:13 a.m.
Harrison checked the security footage.
The man had entered using a stolen identification badge.
Ethan looked over his shoulder.
“Someone tried to reach Khloe?”
Harrison’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
The security system identified the person.
A name appeared.
Daniel Mercer.
Harrison recognized it immediately.
“Impossible.”
Ethan looked confused.
“You know him?”
Harrison stared at the screen.
“Everyone in legal circles knows him.”
“Who is he?”
Harrison slowly answered:
“The attorney who taught me everything I know.”
A long silence.
“The man who disappeared five years ago.”
Ethan frowned.
“But why would he be here?”
Harrison looked at the footage again.
Daniel Mercer walking toward his sister’s room.
A man he once trusted.
A man who vanished.
A man now connected to the people trying to destroy Khloe.
Harrison whispered:
“This just became personal.”
The next morning, Harrison entered his office.
On his desk was a handwritten envelope.
No return address.
No name.
Inside was one piece of paper.
Only one sentence.
“Stop digging, Harrison. Some truths bury everyone who finds them.”
For the first time in years…
Harrison felt something he rarely experienced.
Not fear.
Not doubt.
Something colder.
Recognition.
Because whoever sent that message knew him.
They knew how he thought.
They knew where he would look.
They knew his next move before he made it.
Harrison folded the paper carefully.
Then placed it beside the other evidence.
A small smile appeared.
Not because he was happy.
Because someone had just made a mistake.
They had revealed they were watching him.
And that meant one thing.
They were getting nervous.
Harrison looked out over the city.
“The more you hide…”
He whispered.
“The more I know I’m close.”
That night, a hidden camera inside an empty office recorded a private meeting.
Richard.
Vanessa.
Charles Kensington.
Three people.
One secret.
Charles placed a folder on the table.
“Harrison Cole knows too much.”
Richard looked nervous.
“What do we do?”
Charles opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Harrison.
Khloe.
The baby.
Charles calmly said:
“We remove his reason to fight.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“How?”
Charles closed the folder.
“With the one thing he cannot protect.”
A pause.
May you like
“His reputation.”
