Chapter 2: The Hidden Ally The room fell into absolute silence. Every detective stared at Mateo. Daniel slowly knelt until he was eye level with his son. "Mateo..." he said gently. "Whose voice did you hear?" The boy lowered his eyes. His heart pounded so loudly he could barely hear anything else. "I... I know that voice." The lead detective, Inspector Harrison Cole, spoke softly. "Take your time." Mateo squeezed Daniel's hand. "I can't remember the face." "No one is asking you to." "But..." He swallowed hard. "I've heard that voice a hundred times." Daniel felt a chill spread through his chest. Someone close. Someone trusted. Someone who had walked through this house without suspicion. The mysterious cellphone was taken to the state cybercrime laboratory. Forty-eight hours passed without progress. Every attempt to unlock it failed. Fingerprint recognition. Face ID. Passcode recovery. Nothing worked. Then, on the third morning, Inspector Cole called Daniel. "We found something." Daniel drove to the laboratory immediately. A technician met him inside a secure room. "The phone never connected to a normal cloud backup," she explained. "But..." She pointed toward a large monitor. "It automatically synchronized tiny encrypted packets every night." Daniel frowned. "Can you read them?" "Not directly." "What can you see?" She enlarged a timeline. "There were exactly seventy-two data transfers." "When?" "Every evening." "For six months." Daniel's face hardened. "Someone was receiving information from Rebecca almost every single day." Back at the mansion... Life had become strangely quiet. Rebecca remained in police custody. Sofia slowly returned to her normal routines, though she refused to sleep unless Daniel stayed beside her. Mateo, however, became quieter each day. He watched people. Their voices. Their footsteps. Their habits. Every little detail mattered now. That afternoon he wandered into the family library. The old grandfather clock ticked steadily. Books lined every wall. He had played here countless times as a child. Then something caught his eye. One family photograph. It was crooked. Only slightly. He walked closer. Straightened it. Click. A faint mechanical sound echoed behind the bookshelf. Mateo stepped back. The entire shelf shifted forward less than an inch. His eyes widened. A hidden compartment. He pushed gently. The shelf slowly opened. Inside sat a small steel box. Covered in dust. Untouched for years. "Dad!" Daniel rushed into the room moments later. "What happened?" Mateo pointed silently. Neither of them spoke. Daniel carefully lifted the metal box onto the table. There was no lock. Inside were dozens of old letters. Photographs. Insurance documents. And one sealed envelope. Across the front, written in elegant handwriting: Only if Rebecca ever comes back. Daniel froze. He recognized the handwriting instantly. Emily. His late wife. His hands trembled as he opened the envelope. Inside was a single letter. It began simply. Daniel... If you're reading this, then I was right. Rebecca has returned. Daniel's breathing stopped. He continued reading. You always believed Rebecca left because she wanted a different life. That wasn't true. She left because I discovered what she was stealing. Daniel looked up. Stealing? The letter continued. It wasn't money. It was information. She copied every business document she could find. Every account. Every contract. Every signature. She said someone was paying her for everything she could collect. Daniel felt the blood drain from his face. Emily had known. Years ago. She had known Rebecca was working for someone else. But the letter became even darker. The man paying Rebecca never entered our house. At least... that's what Rebecca wanted me to believe. Daniel stared at the next sentence. His hands began shaking uncontrollably. I think he's already part of this family. That evening... The investigators gathered in Daniel's office. Every family member's name appeared on a whiteboard. House staff. Relatives. Business partners. Old friends. Inspector Cole circled three names. "We know Rebecca had help." "We know the helper knew this house." "We know Emily suspected that person years ago." Daniel looked around the room. "Then someone here has been lying to us for a very long time." The inspector nodded. "Exactly." A young detective entered carrying new forensic results. "We finally recovered something from Rebecca's locked phone." Everyone stood. "What is it?" "Not messages." "Then what?" "Voice recordings." Daniel frowned. "How many?" "One hundred and seventeen." The detective pressed Play. Static filled the room. Then Rebecca's voice. "...Daniel suspects nothing..." Another recording. "...I'll keep the children distracted..." Another. "...he still trusts him..." Daniel suddenly interrupted. "Stop." Everyone looked at him. His face had turned pale. "What?" "I know that sentence." The detective rewound the audio. "...he still trusts him..." Daniel whispered almost to himself. "She didn't say 'me.'" The room went quiet. Inspector Cole leaned closer. "What are you hearing?" Daniel replayed it once more. Then it became unmistakable. Rebecca wasn't speaking to herself. She was talking to someone standing right beside her. A man. Almost completely silent. Only his breathing could be heard. The forensic technician isolated the background noise. Footsteps. A grandfather clock chiming. And... Soft piano music. Daniel's eyes widened. "Our house doesn't have a piano." Inspector Cole nodded. "No." "But someone else's does." Just then another officer burst through the door. "We traced one of the encrypted uploads." Everyone turned. "It didn't go overseas." "Where did it go?" The officer looked down at his report. Then back at Daniel. "It was transmitted less than two miles from this mansion." The room fell silent. Rebecca's partner hadn't been hiding across the country. He had been living nearby. Watching. Waiting. Listening. And according to the latest signal... His phone had just been turned on again. / Chapter 3 / 5

Chapter 4: The Raven's Shadow

Chapter 4: The Raven's Shadow

"Sofia!"

Daniel's voice exploded through the mansion.

He rushed into the empty bedroom, his eyes darting wildly from the open window to the scattered toys on the floor. The curtains billowed in the cold night air. Moonlight poured into the room, making the silence even more terrifying.

"No... no..."

He searched beneath the bed.

Inside the closet.

The adjoining bathroom.

Nothing.

Inspector Harrison Cole arrived seconds later, followed by two officers.

"Seal the property!" he shouted. "No one leaves! Search every room, every hallway, every inch of the grounds!"

Flashlights illuminated the backyard.

Fresh footprints marked the damp grass beneath Sofia's window.

Cole crouched beside them.

"Two sets," he murmured.

Daniel knelt beside him.

"One adult."

Cole nodded.

"And one child."

The footprints led toward the edge of the woods behind the mansion.

Then...

They stopped.

No tire tracks.

No bicycle.

No footprints returning.

It was as if Sofia had simply vanished into the darkness.

Inside the house...

Mateo sat frozen on the staircase.

He couldn't stop shaking.

"I should've stayed with her..."

Daniel hurried back inside and wrapped his arms around his son.

"This isn't your fault."

"But I promised Mom..."

His voice cracked.

"I promised I'd always protect Sofia."

Daniel closed his eyes.

For a moment, he saw Emily's smile.

The promise they had made together years ago.

No matter what happens, keep them safe.

And now...

One of them was gone.

The forensic team began searching Sofia's bedroom.

Most of the room appeared untouched.

Until an officer noticed something unusual beneath the windowsill.

"Inspector."

Cole walked over.

The officer held up a tiny white feather.

Clean.

Almost perfect.

Daniel frowned.

"A bird?"

Cole shook his head.

"No."

The forensic specialist examined it under a portable light.

"It's decorative."

She looked up.

"It came from clothing."

Daniel's heartbeat quickened.

"A costume?"

"Possibly."

Cole exchanged a glance with another detective.

"Or a jacket."

Daniel suddenly remembered Mateo's words.

A raven tattoo.

The raven.

Now...

A feather.

None of it felt like coincidence anymore.

Meanwhile...

Ten miles away...

An abandoned hunting cabin stood deep inside Blackwood Forest.

A lantern flickered behind dusty windows.

Inside, Sofia sat on an old wooden chair wrapped in a warm blanket.

She wasn't tied up.

She wasn't injured.

An older woman placed a mug of hot chocolate in front of her.

"Careful. It's still warm."

Sofia looked up with frightened blue eyes.

"Where's my daddy?"

The woman smiled sadly.

"He'll come."

"When?"

"I don't know."

Sofia held her stuffed rabbit tightly.

"You aren't going to hurt me?"

The woman looked away.

"No."

"Then why can't I go home?"

Before she could answer...

The cabin door opened.

A tall man stepped inside.

His face remained hidden beneath a hood.

Black leather gloves covered his hands.

The older woman immediately stood.

"She's scared."

The man glanced at Sofia.

"I know."

"This wasn't the plan."

"It is now."

The woman lowered her voice.

"Daniel will never stop looking."

The man calmly removed one glove.

A black raven tattoo curled around his wrist.

"That's exactly what I want."

Back at the mansion...

The cybercrime laboratory finally unlocked part of Rebecca's second phone.

Only one folder had survived the encryption.

Its name contained a single word.

Insurance.

Cole opened it.

Inside were twelve video files.

The earliest dated nearly five years ago.

He pressed play.

Rebecca appeared on screen.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

She smiled nervously.

"...something has gone wrong."

Daniel leaned closer.

Rebecca continued.

"I've hidden copies of everything."

"Everything?"

Cole whispered.

The next sentence made everyone stop breathing.

"If anything happens to me..."

"...release Emily's recording."

Daniel shot to his feet.

"What recording?"

Cole immediately searched the folder.

There was no video named Emily.

Only eleven remaining files.

One was missing.

Deleted.

Or stolen.

Daniel felt sick.

Emily had left behind more than a letter.

She had recorded something.

Something important enough for Rebecca to use as insurance.

Late that night...

The mansion grew quiet again.

Police officers came and went.

Search teams combed the surrounding woods.

Helicopters circled overhead.

No sign of Sofia.

Daniel walked alone into Emily's old art studio.

He hadn't entered the room in years.

Everything remained exactly as she had left it.

Paintbrushes.

Half-finished landscapes.

Family sketches.

Dust covered every surface.

He sat silently before one unfinished canvas.

Emily had been painting Sofia.

Only Sofia.

Not the whole family.

Just her daughter.

Daniel gently touched the edge of the canvas.

Something felt strange.

The frame was thicker than it should have been.

He carefully removed it from the easel.

The back panel shifted.

Hidden inside the frame...

A small digital voice recorder.

His pulse quickened.

He pressed the Play button.

Static crackled.

Then Emily's voice filled the room.

Soft.

Calm.

"Daniel..."

His eyes filled with tears.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...I couldn't protect them."

Daniel gripped the recorder tighter.

Emily continued.

"I finally know who Rebecca works for."

He held his breath.

"I never told you because I needed proof."

A loud knocking sound interrupted the recording.

Emily whispered urgently,

"He's here."

Footsteps echoed.

A door opened.

Then...

A man's voice.

Only four words.

"You found the files."

The recording ended.

Abruptly.

Daniel stared at the silent recorder.

His hands trembled.

He knew that voice.

Not from years ago.

From today.

He had heard it on the anonymous phone call.

The same calm voice.

The same measured breathing.

Before Daniel could tell Inspector Cole...

The mansion suddenly lost power.

Every light went out.

Darkness swallowed the house.

Then, from somewhere downstairs...

A single cellphone began to ring.

Not Daniel's.

Not the police's.

Rebecca's locked phone.

The one that had been sealed inside the evidence bag.

May you like

Someone...

Was calling it.
