CHAPTER 5: THE MAN BEHIND THE ASHFORD EMPIRE

CHAPTER 5: THE MAN BEHIND THE ASHFORD EMPIRE
The name remained on every screen.
THOMAS ASHFORD WAS ALIVE.
For ten seconds, nobody in the hospital hallway made a sound.
Then the whispers began.
A dead man.
A hidden experiment.
A billionaire family built on secrets.
The story had become bigger than anyone imagined.
Dr. Adrian Cole looked at Victoria.
The wealthy woman who had spent the last hour trying to destroy Elena now looked like someone who had just seen a ghost walk through a locked door.
“Your husband,” Adrian said slowly.
“Thomas Ashford.”
Victoria did not answer.
“Was alive this entire time?”
Her eyes remained fixed on the blank screen.
Finally, she whispered:
“I thought he was dead.”
Nobody believed her.
Not because of the words.
Because of the way she said them.
There was no sadness.
No shock.
Only fear.
Elena noticed it too.
“You’re afraid of him.”
Victoria looked at her.
For a moment, the hatred disappeared.
Something else appeared.
Something almost human.
“He is not the man you think he is.”
Elena stepped closer.
“You knew what he did.”
Victoria’s jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.”
Adrian interrupted.
“Actually, I think we are beginning to understand.”
He held up the medical documents from Nora.
“Project Phoenix.”
The name hung in the air.
A secret program.
A forbidden experiment.
A hidden chapter of the Ashford family history.
The police officer opened his notebook.
“Mrs. Ashford, we need to talk.”
Victoria looked at him.
Then she laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
“You still don’t understand.”
The officer frowned.
“What?”
Victoria looked around the hallway.
“At this moment, you think I’m the most dangerous person here.”
She looked at the security cameras.
“You’re wrong.”
The lights above them suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked upward.
The hospital system made a strange clicking sound.
Then the main screen turned on again.
A video appeared.
Not Thomas this time.
Matthew.
Elena immediately froze.
It was him.
Older than the last photograph.
Tired.
But alive.
Her hand moved to her mouth.
“Matthew…”
The recording began.
His voice filled the hallway.
“If you’re watching this, then my mother failed.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
The pain on her face was impossible to hide.
Matthew continued.
“I knew someone would try to erase everything.”
A pause.
“So I created a backup plan.”
Adrian watched carefully.
Matthew looked directly into the camera.
“The person you should fear is not my mother.”
Everyone turned toward Victoria.
Then back to the screen.
Matthew continued.
“My mother made terrible choices.”
Victoria lowered her head.
“But she was also trapped.”
Elena frowned.
“What?”
Matthew’s voice became softer.
“Everyone thinks the Ashford family controls everything.”
The screen showed old photographs.
Business meetings.
Private laboratories.
Secret facilities.
“But the Ashford family was created by someone else.”
A photo appeared.
Thomas Ashford.
“You already know his name.”
The image changed.
A younger Thomas.
Standing beside scientists.
Signing documents.
Matthew continued:
“My father built an organization that operated beyond governments.”
The police officer stared.
“What organization?”
The video showed a symbol.
The black triangle.
The same mark.
“The Helix Group.”
Nora’s expression changed.
Adrian noticed.
“You know them.”
Nora did not respond.
“Nora.”
She looked down.
“Yes.”
The doctor waited.
Finally, she spoke.
“The Helix Group was supposed to create medical breakthroughs.”
A pause.
“Then it became something else.”
“What?”
Nora looked at Elena.
“Control.”
The video continued.
Matthew’s voice became urgent.
“They believe human life is something that can be redesigned.”
Images flashed.
Laboratories.
Patients.
Medical records.
“Project Phoenix was only the beginning.”
Elena felt sick.
“What were they trying to create?”
Nobody answered.
Until Nora whispered:
“A perfect human system.”
The words sounded impossible.
But the evidence was right in front of them.
Matthew continued:
“My father discovered that the experiments were not about saving lives.”
A pause.
“They were about creating people who could survive anything.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
“The child…”
Nora nodded.
“Yes.”
Matthew’s voice continued.
“The baby is proof that the experiment changed me.”
Everyone listened.
“But more importantly…”
The screen showed a genetic report.
“The baby proves the experiment can continue naturally.”
Elena stepped backward.
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“No, they don’t want my baby.”
Matthew’s voice became almost a whisper.
“They do.”
The hallway became silent.
“They don’t see your child as a person.”
A pause.
“They see your child as the future.”
The screen suddenly glitched.
Static covered Matthew’s face.
Then another voice appeared.
Thomas.
“You talk too much, son.”
Victoria went pale.
The video changed.
Thomas appeared.
Standing in a dark room.
Behind him were several people wearing the black triangle symbol.
“Matthew always believed truth would save him.”
Thomas smiled.
“He never understood.”
The camera moved closer.
“Truth only matters when someone powerful allows it.”
Adrian stared.
“You’re threatening everyone watching this.”
Thomas smiled.
“No.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“I’m offering a choice.”
A pause.
“Bring me Elena.”
Everyone froze.
“And I will allow the rest of you to survive.”
The video ended.
The hallway exploded into panic.
The police officer immediately grabbed his radio.
“Lock down the entire building.”
Security moved.
Doctors rushed patients away.
But Adrian noticed something.
Victoria wasn’t moving.
She was staring at Elena.
Not with anger.
With guilt.
Elena saw it.
“You knew.”
Victoria looked at her.
“You knew he wanted my child.”
A long silence.
Then Victoria whispered:
“Yes.”
The answer shocked everyone.
The officer stepped forward.
“You admit it?”
Victoria ignored him.
She looked only at Elena.
“But you don’t understand.”
Elena’s eyes filled with anger.
“What don’t I understand?”
Victoria’s voice broke for the first time.
“I wasn’t trying to kill your baby.”
Nobody moved.
“I was trying to hide your baby from him.”
Elena stared.
“What?”
Victoria looked toward the screen where Thomas had disappeared.
“Because once Thomas knows your child survived…”
Her voice trembled.
“He will never stop hunting you.”
Adrian studied her carefully.
A dangerous thought entered his mind.
Maybe Victoria had been both enemy and victim.
Maybe the woman who attacked Elena was also running from something far worse.
Then every elevator in the hospital opened at the same time.
Ding.
Ding.
Ding.
Everyone turned.
The elevators were empty.
Except for one thing.
A small black envelope placed in the center of the floor.
The police officer approached carefully.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph taken only seconds earlier.
Of the entire hallway.
Of everyone standing there.
Including Adrian.
Including Elena.
Including Victoria.
Someone had been watching them.
The entire time.
On the back of the photo were seven words.
Written in black ink.
“YOU HAVE 30 MINUTES TO DECIDE.”
Below it was another line.
“CHOOSE THE MOTHER OR THE CHILD.”
Elena’s face turned white.
Because she understood.
Thomas Ashford was not coming back.
May you like
He was already there.
And he was closer than anyone imagined.
