CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET ROSA NEVER KNEW

CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET ROSA NEVER KNEW
The words from Victoria’s mouth remained inside Ethan’s mind long after the call ended.
"You should ask Rosa why she never told you the whole truth about Lily."
A sentence.
A weapon.
A carefully placed crack in a foundation that was already collapsing.
Ethan stared at Rosa.
She stood frozen beside the old records table, still holding the DNA report with trembling hands.
For years, she had carried the weight of being abandoned.
For years, she had protected Lily from a world that might judge her.
But now Ethan saw something he had never noticed before.
Fear.
Not the fear of being exposed.
Not the fear of losing her job.
Something deeper.
A fear that came from a memory she had buried.
“Rosa,” Ethan said quietly.
She looked up.
“What does she mean?”
Rosa said nothing.
That silence answered him more than words could.
“Rosa.”
His voice became softer.
“I need to know.”
She lowered the DNA report onto the table.
“I don’t know what Victoria is talking about.”
Ethan watched her carefully.
“You looked scared.”
“I’m confused.”
“No.”
The word was gentle, but firm.
“You’re scared.”
Rosa looked away.
The room became painfully quiet.
Finally, she whispered:
“There is something I never told anyone.”
Ethan felt his chest tighten.
“About Lily?”
Rosa nodded.
She walked slowly toward the old wooden chair and sat down.
For the first time, Ethan saw how tired she truly was.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like someone who had spent years carrying a mountain alone.
“When I found out I was pregnant,” Rosa began, “I wasn’t only scared because you were gone.”
Ethan listened.
“I was scared because something strange happened.”
“What?”
Rosa looked at him.
“When I went to the hospital for my first examination, the doctor told me there was a complication.”
Ethan immediately became alert.
“Was Lily in danger?”
“No.”
Rosa shook her head.
“She was healthy.”
She paused.
“But the doctor said there was something unusual.”
“What?”
Rosa hesitated.
“She asked me about my medical history.”
Ethan frowned.
“And?”
“She asked if I had ever been involved in genetic research.”
The room became silent.
Ethan knew that question was not normal.
“Why would she ask that?”
“I didn’t know.”
Rosa looked down.
“I thought maybe it was because I studied biochemistry.”
Ethan remembered.
Before becoming a maid in his mansion, Rosa had been a brilliant graduate student.
She had worked on advanced biological research.
She had dreams of becoming a scientist.
A future she abandoned after Ethan disappeared.
“What did the doctor say?”
Rosa swallowed.
“She said my pregnancy records had been flagged.”
“Flagged by who?”
“I don’t know.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
Because now everything connected.
The hidden medical files.
His father’s investigation.
The secret monitoring.
Someone had been watching Rosa long before Lily was born.
“Did anyone contact you?”
Rosa nodded slowly.
“One person.”
“Who?”
“A woman.”
Ethan waited.
“She came to my apartment when I was seven months pregnant.”
His hands tightened.
“What did she want?”
“She asked questions about Lily.”
“What kind of questions?”
Rosa looked toward the hallway where Lily was sleeping.
“She asked if I knew who the father was.”
“And you told her?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“Afraid of what?”
Rosa’s eyes filled with tears.
“She knew your name.”
The answer hit him.
“She knew about me?”
“Yes.”
A cold feeling moved through Ethan.
“Who was she?”
“I never learned her real name.”
Rosa paused.
“But she left something behind.”
“What?”
“A card.”
Ethan immediately asked:
“Do you still have it?”
Rosa nodded.
“In my old belongings.”
“Where?”
“At my apartment.”
Ethan didn’t hesitate.
“Take me there.”
Rosa looked surprised.
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“Ethan, it’s late.”
“I don’t care.”
His voice was different.
Determined.
Because this was no longer only about discovering the past.
Someone had interfered with their lives.
Someone had hidden his daughter from him.
Someone had known about Lily before he did.
And Ethan Caldwell was not a man who accepted unanswered questions.
Thirty minutes later, Ethan’s car stopped outside Rosa’s small apartment.
The contrast was impossible to ignore.
His mansion had endless rooms, marble floors, and expensive artwork.
Rosa’s apartment was simple.
Small.
Warm.
A home built from love rather than money.
Lily’s drawings covered one wall.
Colorful pictures of flowers, animals, and three people holding hands.
Ethan stopped when he saw one.
A little girl.
A woman.
A man.
The man was drawn with a large smile.
Underneath it, written in uneven handwriting:
"Daddy someday."
Ethan’s throat tightened.
Rosa noticed.
“She always wanted to know about you.”
He looked at her.
“What did you tell her?”
“That you were someone kind.”
Ethan looked away.
“I wasn’t.”
Rosa shook her head.
“You made mistakes.”
“That’s a generous way to say it.”
“I’m not defending what happened.”
She walked toward a small wooden box.
“I’m saying Lily deserves the truth.”
She opened it.
Inside were old photographs, documents, and memories from a life Ethan never knew existed.
Then she pulled out a small envelope.
“This.”
Ethan took it.
The paper was old.
Yellowed.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a black card.
No name.
No company.
Only a symbol.
A silver circle with a line through the center.
Ethan stared.
Because he recognized it.
His father’s private organization.
A group that handled sensitive family matters.
A group that officially did not exist.
His face changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“The woman left it.”
“Did she say anything?”
Rosa closed her eyes.
“She said one thing.”
“What?”
Rosa whispered:
“Your child is not the only thing they are afraid of.”
Ethan froze.
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
Suddenly, a sound came from the hallway.
A small voice.
“Daddy?”
Both of them turned.
Lily stood there, rubbing her eyes.
She looked at Ethan.
Then smiled slightly.
“You came to my home.”
The simplicity of her words almost destroyed him.
Because she was happy.
Happy that he was there.
After only one day.
Ethan walked toward her.
“Yes.”
“Will you leave again?”
The question stopped him.
A child should never have to ask that.
Ethan knelt down.
“No.”
Lily studied his face.
“Promise?”
He looked at her.
And for the first time in years, Ethan Caldwell made a promise that had nothing to do with business.
“I promise.”
Lily smiled.
Then she hugged him.
Ethan closed his eyes.
But behind that moment of happiness, another storm was forming.
Because somewhere across the city, Victoria Whitmore sat inside her luxury apartment.
Her engagement ring rested on the table.
Her perfect future was disappearing.
But she was not crying.
She was making a phone call.
A dangerous one.
The person on the other end answered immediately.
“It’s time.”
Victoria looked at the photograph in front of her.
A photograph of Rosa.
A photograph of Lily.
And a photograph of Ethan.
“I need you to destroy them.”
A pause.
“How?”
Victoria smiled coldly.
“Find the truth about Lily.”
She looked at the ring that represented everything she wanted.
“Then make sure Ethan believes the worst.”
Because Victoria had finally understood something.
She could not defeat Rosa by pretending to be innocent.
She could not defeat Lily by attacking a child.
So she would do something much more powerful.
She would turn Ethan against the two people he had just discovered he loved.
And she already knew the secret that could do it.
A secret buried four years ago.
May you like
A secret even Rosa did not remember.
A secret that could change everything.
