Chapter 2: The Eyes Inside the Walls The tiny red light continued blinking. Once. Twice. Three times. Daniel Hayes stared at it as if it were a weapon pointed directly at his heart. A camera. Inside the laundry room. Hidden above the shelves. Watching his daughter. His first instinct was rage. His second was something colder. Control. A man who built an empire from nothing learned one lesson early: The person who loses control first usually loses everything. So Daniel did not smash the camera. He did not shout. He did not confront Emily. Not yet. Instead, he folded the note and slipped it into his jacket pocket. Then he turned toward Lily. "Sweetheart." She looked terrified. "Did someone tell you to write this?" She shook her head. "No." "Then who did?" Her fingers tightened around the sleeves of her oversized sweater. "I can't tell you." Daniel's chest tightened. "Why?" "Because she'll know." "Who?" Lily didn't answer. She looked at the camera. Daniel followed her eyes. And suddenly he understood. This wasn't just about Emily. Someone else was involved. Someone who knew the house. Someone who knew where the cameras were. Someone who was afraid. Daniel lowered his voice. "Does Emily know about this note?" Lily immediately shook her head. "No." "Good." He gently took her hand. "Listen to me. From this moment, you don't hide from me anymore." Her eyes filled with tears. "But everyone says..." "Everyone who?" She swallowed. "The staff." Daniel felt a chill. "The staff said what?" Lily looked toward the hallway. "They said rich families have secrets." She paused. "And children who talk about secrets disappear." Daniel felt his jaw tighten. Disappear. That wasn't something a child should ever hear. Not in his house. Not ever. He picked Lily up. She was ten years old. Too old to carry like a toddler. But in that moment, she felt impossibly small. Like the little girl who used to fall asleep on his shoulder while he read bedtime stories. The little girl who used to believe her father could fix anything. He carried her upstairs. Not toward the dining room. Not toward Emily. Toward his private office. The only room in the mansion without smart-home technology. The only room he had personally designed. The only room where nobody had access except him. When he opened the door, Lily hesitated. "Daddy..." "Yes?" "Emily said I'm not allowed in here." Daniel looked at her. "Why?" "She said important people don't share rooms with children." A strange calm came over him. Because anger had already burned through. What remained was something much more dangerous. Certainty. He placed Lily on the leather sofa. Then he removed his coat and wrapped it around her shoulders. "Your mother would be furious if she knew you were sitting in a laundry room eating cold soup." At the mention of her mother, Lily's face changed. Her eyes softened. "I miss Mommy." Daniel sat beside her. "I do too." For three years, they had survived the impossible. After Anna's death, Daniel had convinced himself that protecting Lily meant providing everything. The best schools. The safest neighborhood. The biggest house. The most expensive security system. But now he realized something terrifying. He had built a fortress. And somehow... The danger had entered through the front door. A soft knock interrupted them. Daniel immediately stood. "Who is it?" A voice answered. "Mr. Hayes?" It was Margaret. The housekeeper. She had worked for the family for eighteen years. She was the only employee who had known Anna before her death. Daniel opened the door slightly. Margaret stood there holding a tray. Her face was pale. "I brought some food for Lily." Daniel studied her. "Why didn't you bring it to the laundry room?" The older woman froze. A small crack appeared in her carefully controlled expression. "I..." She looked at Lily. Then away. Daniel noticed. Fear. Margaret wasn't surprised that Lily was there. She was afraid that Daniel knew. "Margaret." Her hands trembled. "Yes, sir?" "How long has my daughter been eating alone during parties?" Silence. A painful, heavy silence. "Answer me." The housekeeper lowered her eyes. "Six months." Daniel felt like the room moved. Six months. Half a year. His daughter had been hidden away while he traveled for business. Six months of birthdays. Six months of dinners. Six months of moments he would never get back. "Why didn't you tell me?" Margaret's eyes filled with tears. "Because..." She stopped. Daniel stepped closer. "Because what?" "Because she made sure nobody could." "Who?" Margaret looked toward the hallway. Then whispered: "Mrs. Hayes." Emily. Again. But this time, something was different. Margaret looked terrified. Not guilty. Terrified. "What did Emily do?" The housekeeper shook her head. "I can't say." "You're protecting her?" "No." Margaret's voice cracked. "I'm protecting Lily." Daniel stared at her. "Explain." Margaret reached into her apron pocket. She pulled out a small envelope. "I found this three weeks ago." Daniel took it. "What is it?" "Something that belonged to your late wife." His fingers stopped moving. "My wife?" Margaret nodded. "Mrs. Anna left it hidden in the old nursery." Daniel opened the envelope. Inside was a single photograph. A photograph of Emily. But it wasn't recent. It was taken years ago. Before Daniel ever met her. On the back of the photograph were handwritten words. Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately. Anna's. His heart nearly stopped. "Daniel, if you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid." His hands began shaking. He turned the photograph over. There was more. "Do not trust the woman who says she wants to save our family." Daniel stared at the words. The room became silent. Even the air felt frozen. Because Anna had written this... Before she died. Before Emily entered their lives. Before the wedding. Before Daniel ever suspected anything. A terrible question formed in his mind. How much had Anna known? And why hadn't she told him? A sound came from the hallway. A phone vibrating. Daniel looked up. Margaret looked terrified. Then Lily whispered: "Daddy..." He turned. "What?" Lily pointed toward his desk. "That's not your phone." Daniel slowly walked over. A small black device sat beneath a stack of papers. A phone. Not his. The screen lit up. One new message. From an unknown number. Daniel picked it up. The message contained only one sentence. "If you want to know what happened to Anna, stop trusting everyone inside your house." Daniel stared at the screen. Then another message appeared. "Including the person who gave you that letter." Slowly... He turned toward Margaret. The housekeeper's face had gone completely white. Because she knew something Daniel didn't. And whatever it was... Could destroy everything. End of Chapter 2 TO BE CONTINUED / Chapter 6 / 14

Chapter 7: The Recording Anna Left Behind

Chapter 7: The Recording Anna Left Behind

The mansion alarm continued screaming.

A cold mechanical voice repeated through the speakers.

"Security breach detected. Underground level accessed."

But Daniel heard only one thing.

The voice hidden beneath the alarm.

A voice he knew better than his own.

A voice he had spent three years trying to forget.

Anna.

His wife.

The mother of his child.

The woman he buried.

The woman whose last words to him had been a simple promise:

"Take care of Lily."

Daniel stood completely still.

Nobody in the room moved.

Not Emily.

Not Margaret.

Not even Lily.

Because they all understood the impossible thing that had just happened.

Anna had left something behind.

A message.

A warning.

A final secret.

The speakers crackled again.

Static filled the room.

Then Anna's voice returned.

"Daniel..."

His knees almost gave out.

The recording continued.

"If you are hearing this, then something happened that I feared would happen."

A pause.

A faint sound of breathing.

Anna sounded tired.

Afraid.

Not like the confident woman he remembered.

Like someone running out of time.

"I don't know who you can trust anymore."

Daniel slowly looked at everyone around him.

Emily.

Margaret.

The hidden secrets.

The lies.

Anna's voice continued.

"Especially not the people who tell you they are protecting you."

Emily's face changed slightly.

Only for a second.

But Daniel saw it.

"Daniel, I need you to understand something."

The speakers hissed.

"The night of my accident was not an accident."

Silence.

A silence so complete that Daniel could hear Lily breathing beside him.

The words he had secretly feared for years had finally been spoken.

His wife's death was not random.

Someone had caused it.

Someone had taken her away.

Daniel clenched his fists.

Anna continued.

"I discovered what Jonathan did."

Daniel looked at the photograph of Thomas.

"I discovered why Thomas disappeared."

His eyes narrowed.

"And I discovered why Emily entered our lives."

Emily suddenly stepped forward.

"Turn it off."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"Turn it off."

Her voice was no longer elegant.

No longer calm.

There was fear underneath.

Real fear.

Daniel stared.

"Why?"

Emily didn't answer.

That was the first time he had ever seen her afraid.

He walked toward the security panel.

"Where is this recording coming from?"

Margaret answered quietly.

"The old basement."

Daniel turned.

"You knew?"

Margaret looked ashamed.

"I knew Anna created a backup system."

"When?"

"Before she died."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

The housekeeper's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Anna made me promise."

Daniel froze.

"Promise what?"

Margaret looked at Lily.

"That I would only reveal it when Lily was old enough to remember."

Daniel looked confused.

"Remember what?"

Nobody answered.

Then Lily spoke.

"I remember the room."

Everyone turned.

The little girl looked toward the floor.

"The room under my bedroom."

Daniel's heart tightened.

"You've been there?"

She nodded.

"Once."

"When?"

"Before Mommy died."

The entire world seemed to stop.

Daniel slowly approached her.

"Lily..."

His voice softened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Mommy told me not to."

"What did she say?"

Lily closed her eyes.

"She said Daddy would try to fix everything."

A tear fell.

"And that would put him in danger."

Daniel felt a sharp pain in his chest.

His daughter had been carrying this alone.

For three years.

Three years.

A child had protected him.

Not the other way around.

"What was inside the room?"

Lily whispered:

"Boxes."

"Anything else?"

She nodded.

"A big mirror."

"A mirror?"

"Mommy said it wasn't a mirror."

Daniel frowned.

"What was it?"

Lily looked toward the wall.

"It was a window."

Everyone became silent.

"A window to where?"

Lily didn't answer.

Because she didn't need to.

The answer came from behind them.

Emily.

"The old basement."

Daniel turned.

Emily looked exhausted.

The perfect mask was gone.

"You knew."

Daniel's voice was cold.

"You knew everything."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"Don't lie."

"I'm not."

She looked at Anna's photograph.

"Not everything."

Daniel studied her.

"Then tell me what you know."

Emily was silent.

Then she said:

"Your father built that basement to hide things."

"What things?"

"People."

The word landed heavily.

Daniel stared.

"People?"

Emily nodded.

"Your father destroyed anyone who threatened his empire."

Margaret whispered:

"Enough."

Emily looked at her.

"You know I'm right."

Daniel looked between them.

"What happened down there?"

Nobody answered.

Then the mansion lights suddenly turned off.

Complete darkness.

A second later...

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Daniel immediately moved toward Lily.

But before he reached her...

A figure appeared at the end of the hallway.

A man.

Tall.

Older.

Holding something in his hand.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The man didn't answer.

Instead...

He looked directly at Lily.

And whispered:

"You finally remember me."

Lily froze.

Her face turned pale.

"Daddy..."

Daniel looked at her.

"What is it?"

The girl grabbed his arm.

Her voice barely existed.

"It's him."

Daniel stared at the stranger.

"Who?"

Lily's eyes filled with terror.

"The man who was with Mommy the night she died."

The stranger slowly stepped into the light.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

The scars.

The face.

The photograph.

Thomas Hayes.

His father's forgotten son.

His own brother.

But Thomas wasn't looking at Daniel.

He was looking at Emily.

And the first words out of his mouth were:

"She was never trying to steal your money."

A pause.

"She was trying to find the person who killed Anna."

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at Emily.

Then Thomas.

Then Lily.

Nothing made sense anymore.

Thomas slowly raised the object in his hand.

A small black drive.

"The truth is on here."

Daniel stared.

"What's stopping you from showing me?"

Thomas looked toward the security cameras.

Then whispered:

"Because someone inside this house is still working for the person who started all of this."

The hallway went silent.

Then every camera in the mansion turned toward Daniel.

One by one.

Red lights appeared.

Dozens of them.

Watching.

Listening.

And from the speakers...

A new voice spoke.

A voice Daniel had never heard before.

May you like

"Thomas... you should have stayed dead."
