Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Wedding

Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Wedding
The distant sirens grew louder.
One by one, conversations faded into uneasy silence.
Then the front doors of the Whitmore mansion opened.
Two detectives stepped inside, followed by uniformed officers.
No one had expected the wedding reception to become a crime scene.
Detective Laura Bennett walked directly toward Rebecca Sloan.
"Ms. Sloan," she said, accepting the folder. "Thank you for preserving the evidence."
Vanessa forced a nervous laugh.
"This is absurd. You can't interrupt a private wedding because of forged paperwork."
Detective Bennett looked at her without emotion.
"We're not here because of the paperwork alone."
She held up another document.
"We're here because someone attempted to interfere with the legal custody of a newborn child."
A ripple of shock spread through the guests.
Vanessa instinctively reached for Ethan's hand.
He stepped away.
"Don't," he whispered.
For the first time since they met, he couldn't bring himself to look into her eyes.
Detective Bennett continued.
"During our investigation, we discovered several financial transfers made from Mrs. Whitmore's personal account."
Rebecca placed printed bank statements on the table.
Every transfer had been sent to the same recipient.
A former hospital records clerk.
Dismissed nearly three years earlier for falsifying patient files.
Vanessa's breathing became shallow.
"They were consulting fees," she insisted.
"No," Rebecca replied.
"They were payments made over six months."
Emily slowly closed her eyes.
Everything finally made sense.
The unexplained delays.
The missing paperwork.
The nurses who suddenly treated her like a stranger.
Vanessa hadn't acted in desperation.
She had planned everything long before the baby was born.
Detective Bennett looked directly at her.
"Mrs. Whitmore..."
"Were you trying to steal custody..."
"...or were you trying to hide something even bigger?"
May you like
Vanessa's face drained of color.
She realized they hadn't uncovered the worst secret yet.
