Chapter 6: Grace Hollow

Chapter 6: Grace Hollow
Emily didn't answer immediately.
She couldn't.
The note trembled in Detective Laura Bennett's hand.
"Ask Emily about Grace Hollow Hospital."
Daniel stared at his wife.
"What is Grace Hollow?"
Emily's breathing became shallow.
"I..."
Her voice failed.
Daniel took one slow step toward her.
"What is it?"
Tears rolled silently down her face.
"It was..."
She swallowed.
"...a psychiatric hospital."
The room fell silent.
Ryan frowned.
"You never told me that."
Emily didn't even look at him.
"I never told anyone."
Laura pulled out her notebook.
"Start from the beginning."
Emily closed her eyes.
"When I was nineteen..."
"I had severe anxiety."
"After my father died..."
"I stopped sleeping."
"I had panic attacks."
"My mother admitted me to Grace Hollow."
Daniel listened without interrupting.
"It was supposed to be temporary."
"Three weeks."
"It became seven months."
Officer Martinez searched the name on his tablet.
His expression changed.
"Detective..."
Laura looked over.
"What?"
"Grace Hollow closed twelve years ago."
"Why?"
Martinez hesitated.
"There were investigations."
"Patient abuse."
"Financial fraud."
"Missing medical records."
Laura frowned.
"Missing?"
Martinez nodded.
"The hospital shut down before everything was resolved."
Emily whispered,
"I never went back."
Daniel folded his arms.
"What does that have to do with Lily?"
Emily looked helpless.
"I don't know."
Laura watched her carefully.
"You recognized the name immediately."
"Yes."
"So someone wanted you to."
Emily nodded.
"I think so."
Ryan suddenly spoke.
"I've heard of Grace Hollow."
Everyone looked at him.
"My sister worked there."
Daniel frowned.
"As a nurse?"
Ryan shook his head.
"Administrative assistant."
"When?"
"About thirteen years ago."
Laura immediately wrote it down.
"Name?"
"Rachel Walker."
Officer Martinez froze.
"Walker?"
Ryan nodded.
"My older sister."
Laura slowly looked toward him.
"Is she still alive?"
Ryan's face darkened.
"I don't know."
"What do you mean?"
"We haven't spoken in almost ten years."
"Why not?"
Ryan hesitated.
"She disappeared."
Silence.
Laura looked up sharply.
"Disappeared?"
Ryan nodded.
"She quit her job."
"Sold everything."
"No forwarding address."
"My parents reported her missing."
"What happened?"
Ryan laughed bitterly.
"The police said adults are allowed to disappear."
Martinez looked back at his tablet.
"Detective..."
"What now?"
"I found Rachel Walker."
Ryan's eyes widened.
"You did?"
Martinez slowly turned the screen around.
Employment records.
Volunteer registry.
Little Oaks Preschool.
Rachel Walker
Volunteer Coordinator.
Employment ended...
One month ago.
Ryan stopped breathing.
"No..."
Daniel looked at the screen.
"Rachel worked with Lily?"
Martinez nodded.
Emily whispered,
"Rachel..."
Then realization struck.
Her face turned white.
"Oh my God."
Laura looked directly at her.
"What?"
Emily covered her mouth.
"The woman..."
"The one everyone called Vanessa..."
Laura frowned.
"What about her?"
Emily's hands began shaking uncontrollably.
"I don't think her name was Vanessa."
No one spoke.
Emily stared at the floor.
"I only met her twice."
"She introduced herself as Vanessa."
"But..."
"But what?"
"I saw her driver's license once."
Ryan leaned forward.
"What did it say?"
Emily whispered,
"It said..."
"...Rachel."
Ryan stumbled backward.
"My sister."
The room erupted.
Martinez immediately began searching photographs.
Driver's licenses.
Old employment files.
Volunteer records.
Within minutes...
Two photographs appeared side by side.
Vanessa Cole.
Rachel Walker.
Same woman.
Different names.
Different dates of birth.
Different addresses.
Different identities.
Laura looked stunned.
"Every official record says Vanessa Cole exists."
Martinez nodded.
"But facial recognition keeps matching Rachel Walker."
Daniel frowned.
"So..."
"She's been living under another identity."
Ryan sat heavily in a chair.
None of it made sense.
"My sister hated children."
Everyone looked at him.
"What?"
Ryan nodded slowly.
"She never wanted kids."
"She wouldn't volunteer at a preschool."
Laura asked quietly,
"What changed?"
Ryan stared into space.
"The hospital."
Daniel looked at him.
"What happened there?"
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
"Rachel changed after Grace Hollow."
"She stopped laughing."
"She barely slept."
"Sometimes she'd wake up screaming."
Emily slowly lifted her head.
"Screaming about what?"
Ryan answered without hesitation.
"She kept repeating one sentence."
"What sentence?"
He swallowed.
"'They took the wrong little girl.'"
The room went completely silent.
Daniel felt a chill crawl up his spine.
Laura looked toward Emily.
"Does that mean anything to you?"
Emily slowly shook her head.
"No."
Then she stopped.
A memory surfaced.
Faint.
Forgotten.
Almost buried.
"When I was admitted..."
Everyone waited.
Emily looked terrified.
"There was another patient."
"A little girl."
"Maybe..."
"Eight years old."
Laura frowned.
"A child?"
Emily nodded.
"She cried every night."
"She kept saying..."
Emily closed her eyes.
"...that she wasn't supposed to be there."
Martinez interrupted.
"Detective."
"What?"
"I found something."
He turned the laptop.
An archived newspaper article.
Grace Hollow Under Investigation
Laura skimmed the headline.
Then her eyes widened.
Halfway down the article...
One paragraph had been highlighted.
'Investigators are examining allegations that patient files were intentionally altered, causing several minors to be admitted under incorrect identities. At least one child has never been located.'
Daniel stared.
Laura reread the sentence.
Once.
Twice.
Then she looked toward Emily.
Then Ryan.
Then the note.
Ask Emily about Grace Hollow Hospital.
This had never been about the affair.
Never about Ryan.
Never even about Lily.
Someone had orchestrated everything...
Just to force them to remember Grace Hollow.
Laura's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
Another message.
This time...
Only one sentence.
"You're finally asking the right questions."
Below it...
A photograph.
Lily.
Still unharmed.
Still holding her stuffed rabbit.
Standing beside a smiling woman.
Not Vanessa.
Not Rachel.
Someone else.
An elderly nurse in a faded Grace Hollow Hospital uniform.
The timestamp on the photo read:
