CHAPTER 5: THE FINAL CONFESSION

CHAPTER 5: THE FINAL CONFESSION
The search for Lena lasted two days.
Then she came to them.
Not running.
Not hiding.
Walking straight into the police station.
The room went silent.
Evie saw her immediately.
The resemblance was undeniable.
Same eyes.
Same expression.
Same sadness.
Lena stopped in front of her.
“I’m sorry.”
Those were the first words she said.
Evie stared.
“You watched me almost die.”
Lena looked down.
“I tried to save you.”
“Then why disappear?”
Lena’s eyes filled with pain.
“Because your parents made me disappear before.”
She revealed everything.
Richard discovered Lena planned to expose him.
He started the fire to destroy evidence.
But he didn’t know Evie was still inside.
Lena entered the burning house to save her.
She unlocked Evie’s bedroom door.
But before she could escape, the ceiling collapsed.
Everyone believed Lena died.
But she survived.
And she spent years collecting evidence.
“The basement box was mine,” Lena said.
Evie looked shocked.
“You wanted me to find it?”
Lena nodded.
“I knew they would eventually try to erase you too.”
Detective Harris asked:
“Why now?”
Lena looked toward the interrogation room.
“Because Richard finally made a mistake.”
They played the final recording.
Richard’s confession.
His own voice admitting everything.
The fire.
The lies.
The cover-up.
Evie listened quietly.
No tears.
No anger.
Only disappointment.
When it ended, she whispered:
“I spent my whole life loving people who were pretending to love me.”
Lena stepped closer.
May you like
“You still have me.”
For the first time in years, Evie didn’t feel alone.
