Chapter 5: Learning to Live Again

Chapter 5: Learning to Live Again

Freedom wasn't loud.

It was quiet.

It was sleeping through the night without waking to footsteps outside the bedroom.

It was laughing without asking permission.

It was watching my daughter smile without wondering what tomorrow would bring.

Counseling wasn't easy.

Healing wasn't quick.

Some scars remained invisible.

Alex visited every weekend.

He never treated me like someone broken.

Only someone rebuilding.

Deputy Collins stopped by one afternoon with flowers.

She smiled as my daughter reached for her badge.

"You're both doing well."

"I finally believe that," I answered.

One evening I received a letter from another woman.

She had watched the news coverage of the trial.

She wrote only one sentence that mattered.

"Because you spoke, I finally called the police."

I read it three times.

Then I cried.

This time...

They were tears of hope
