Chapter 2: A Ghost from the Past The search for the missing mechanic led investigators to a quiet coastal town nearly six hundred miles away. His name was Victor Hale. Official records claimed he had died in a warehouse fire five months earlier. But Detective Hayes never believed it. When officers searched the burned property again, they found evidence that the body recovered there had belonged to someone else. Victor had staged his own death. Three days later, police tracked him to an abandoned marina. He didn't run. He simply raised his hands. "I've been waiting," he said. During questioning, Victor admitted he had tampered with Ava's brakes. But his confession came with a devastating twist. "I wasn't hired to kill her." "Then why sabotage the car?" Ethan demanded. Victor lowered his head. "I was told the accident had to look serious enough to leave her unable to fight." He revealed that Margaret had approached him through an intermediary and promised enough money to erase every debt he owed. "I thought she'd survive." Ethan's voice trembled. "You destroyed her life." Victor nodded, tears filling his eyes. "I know." Then he reached into his pocket. "I kept something... because I knew one day I'd need protection." It was an old voice recorder. The recording crackled with static. Margaret's unmistakable voice echoed through the room. "She doesn't have to die." "Just make sure she never stands in my way again." The room fell silent. For the first time, investigators had direct evidence tying Margaret to the crash. But before anyone could celebrate, Detective Hayes received an urgent call. Victor's house had just been searched. Someone had broken in. Everything was untouched... Except for one family photograph. Victor's teenage daughter had disappeared.
