CHAPTER 9 THE TRIAL OF TRUTH

The fake hospital worker sprinted down the corridor.

"Stop!"

The command echoed through the maternity wing.

Instead of stopping, the man shoved an equipment cart into the hallway.

Metal trays crashed across the polished floor.

Nurses ducked out of the way.

Patients cried out in surprise.

The two officers leaped over the scattered equipment and continued the chase.

Inside Room 417, Owen was already on his feet.

"What happened?"

I heard the shouting outside.

Running footsteps.

A radio crackling.

Then someone locked our hospital door from the outside.

Dr. Carter hurried in moments later.

"Stay calm."

Her voice remained steady, but I could see the concern in her eyes.

"Hospital security is handling it."

"Was someone trying to get in?"

She hesitated for only a second.

"We believe someone was impersonating a staff member."

Owen instinctively moved beside my bed.

He wasn't a police officer.

He wasn't a fighter.

He was simply a husband who had reached the point where fear had become determination.

No one was getting near his wife or daughter.

Three floors below...

The suspect burst through an emergency exit.

A black SUV waited with its engine already running.

The rear door flew open.

The man jumped inside.

The vehicle accelerated before officers could reach it.

Detective Brooks arrived just in time to see the SUV disappear into morning traffic.

"Damn it."

A nearby patrol officer pointed toward the ground.

"He dropped something."

Brooks picked up a hospital identification badge.

It was fake.

Professionally printed.

Almost impossible to distinguish from a real one.

Then she noticed a tiny symbol printed on the back.

A black raven.

The same bird that appeared in the old Raven Knight Media logo.

Richard Kane had just made his first move in person.

By afternoon, every local news station was covering the story.

Not because of the counterfeit vitamins.

Not because of Lorraine.

But because someone had attempted to enter a protected maternity ward using a fake identity.

The hospital tightened security.

Every visitor was screened twice.

Every employee badge was rescanned.

No one complained.

Not after hearing what had happened.

At the police headquarters, the investigation accelerated.

Forensic analysts finished examining the hard drives recovered from the garden.

One folder contained financial records.

Another held contracts.

Then a spreadsheet appeared.

Its title was simple:

Revenue

Brooks opened it.

Each row listed a different viral story.

Next to every story...

Advertising income.

Sponsorship payments.

Licensing fees.

Some tragedies had earned tens of thousands of dollars.

Others...

Hundreds of thousands.

Then she found our file.

Project: Maren Hayes

Current Revenue: $418,000

Brooks stared silently.

None of that money had gone to the people whose lives had been destroyed.

It had all flowed through shell companies controlled by Richard Kane.

The district attorney entered the room carrying another folder.

"We're ready."

Brooks looked up.

"For what?"

"To charge Lorraine."

She nodded slowly.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Video manipulation.

Obstruction.

Possession of counterfeit medical products.

Financial fraud.

Conspiracy.

"But Kane?"

The attorney sighed.

"We still need him."

Meanwhile...

Lorraine sat alone in a holding cell.

For the first time in weeks...

No phone.

No camera.

No notifications.

Only silence.

The steel door opened.

Detective Brooks stepped inside.

"I'm not here to interrogate you."

Lorraine looked away.

"I'm here to give you a choice."

She placed several photographs on the table.

The counterfeit warehouse.

The hard drives.

The fake hospital badge.

Finally...

A photograph of Richard Kane.

"He tried to enter the hospital today."

Lorraine's head snapped up.

"What?"

"He sent someone."

"No..."

Her voice trembled.

"He said nobody would get hurt."

Brooks remained silent.

"He promised me."

"He lied."

Tears welled in Lorraine's eyes.

"I never wanted this."

Brooks answered quietly.

"Maybe not."

"But every time you pressed Record..."

"You helped him."

For nearly a minute...

Lorraine said nothing.

Then she whispered,

"He's planning something."

Brooks leaned forward.

"What?"

"I don't know exactly."

"But he always finishes his stories."

"What does that mean?"

Lorraine swallowed hard.

"He told me..."

Her voice cracked.

"...that audiences hate unfinished endings."

The room fell silent.

Brooks immediately understood.

Richard Kane wasn't interested in exposing the truth.

He wanted a dramatic ending.

Whatever that ending cost.

That evening...

Back at the hospital...

Dr. Carter entered with one final ultrasound before the weekend.

Sadie appeared on the screen again.

This time...

She stretched.

One tiny arm reached upward.

Then...

She opened her mouth.

"It looks like she's yawning," Owen laughed.

Dr. Carter smiled.

"I think so."

Another kick landed against my side.

Then another.

"She's much more active today."

The doctor nodded.

"Exactly what we'd hoped to see."

For the first time since the nightmare began...

The words felt real.

"She's recovering."

Just as Dr. Carter finished the examination, Detective Brooks arrived.

She didn't smile.

She closed the hospital room door behind her.

"I need to tell you something."

Owen immediately sensed the seriousness in her voice.

"What happened?"

"We believe Richard Kane has lost control of his operation."

"Is that good?"

"Usually."

"But desperate people become unpredictable."

She looked directly at both of us.

"He won't stop because the evidence is overwhelming."

"He'll stop only when he's arrested."

She paused.

"And until then..."

May you like

"You are still his final chapter."
