Chapter 13 - Brothers at the EdgeThe meeting place was an abandoned paper mill outside Hollow Falls.

I arrived at 11:57 p.m.

I wasn't alone.

Vincent's team occupied the surrounding woods, and two federal agents waited in a vehicle several hundred yards away. My father's ledger had given us enough evidence to convince one prosecutor that the Vale organization was being used to conceal murder, bribery, and an attempted criminal takeover.

The prosecutor had agreed to arrange surveillance.

He had not agreed to intervene before midnight.

Until then, I had three minutes to save Noah.

I entered the mill carrying a metal case.

Adrian stood beneath a hanging industrial light, wearing the same charcoal suit he'd worn at the press conference.

Samuel sat nearby, his hands bound.

Noah occupied a chair at the far end of the room.

His face brightened when he saw me.

"Luca!"

Adrian pressed a pistol against Samuel's shoulder.

"Careful."

I stopped.

"Let them go."

"Give me the case."

I placed it on the floor.

Adrian gestured toward it.

"Open it."

Inside lay the ledger, several bank statements, and a stack of photographs.

He studied the contents, turning pages with the satisfaction of a man reviewing a profitable investment.

"Father was a sentimental fool."

"He tried to stop you."

"He tried to take my future away."

"Your future?"

Adrian looked up.

"You always had everything, Luca. Father trained you to lead. He told everyone you were special. Even when you made mistakes, he called them sacrifices. When I made mistakes, he called them weaknesses."

"So you decided to kill him?"

"I didn't kill him."

"Then why did you bury me?"

His expression hardened.

"Because you wouldn't leave anything to me. I spent twenty-five years waiting for you to step aside, and you never did."

"You could have asked."

A bitter laugh escaped him.

"Asked? You would have given me another division, another company, another handful of responsibilities. You would have made me your subordinate and called it love."

"You're my brother."

"And you were always the favorite."

I studied him.

For a moment, I could see the twelve-year-old boy who had stood beside our father's coffin, frightened and angry, desperately searching for proof that someone would stay.

Then the memory vanished beneath the man who had tried to murder a child.

"What happened to Rachel?" I asked.

Adrian's expression went blank.

"She interfered."

"She was a nurse."

"She discovered the payments. She copied records she didn't understand. She threatened to bring the whole organization down."

"So you ordered her killed."

"I ordered her frightened."

The words came out too quickly.

I stared at him.

"Who drove the truck?"

Adrian looked away.

"Marcus arranged it."

"And Father?"

For the first time, Adrian seemed uncertain.

"He was never supposed to survive."

My stomach tightened.

"Explain."

Adrian's jaw flexed.

"Our father escaped the first attempt. He disappeared, leaving us to believe he was dead. I spent three years trying to find him because I knew he had the original documents."

"Then you had him killed tonight?"

"No."

The answer surprised me.

Adrian glanced toward the rafters.

"Marcus betrayed me, too."

A shadow moved behind him.

Silas Vane stepped into the light.

He held a pistol pointed at Adrian.

"You're making this very complicated," the assassin said.

Adrian turned.

"What are you doing?"

"Collecting the balance."

"You work for me!"

"I work for whoever pays."

Silas's gaze shifted to me.

"You brought the documents?"

I watched him carefully.

"Some of them."

He smiled.

"Then perhaps we can reach an agreement."

Noah suddenly spoke.

"You're the man who hurt my mom."

Silas froze.

The boy stared at him with trembling determination.

"You were there that night. I remember your ring."

Silas slowly lowered his pistol.

"You're a very observant child."

"You killed her."

For several seconds, the assassin said nothing.

Then he looked at Adrian.

"Did you tell him?"

"No," Adrian snapped.

Silas laughed quietly.

"Of course you didn't."

He turned toward me.

"Your brother wanted Rachel silenced. Marcus arranged the accident. I drove the truck."

The room went still.

Samuel struggled against his restraints.

Adrian stared at Silas in disbelief.

"You said you'd never discuss the job."

"I was paid to complete it, not protect your feelings."

I felt the rage rising inside me.

Three years.

Three years of questions, false reports, and a family destroyed because a woman had found evidence that powerful men were afraid to lose.

I took one step forward.

Silas raised his pistol.

"Don't."

Noah looked at me.

His eyes begged me to do something terrible.

I wanted to.

I wanted to make Silas feel every moment of fear Rachel had experienced. I wanted to destroy Adrian and Marcus until nothing remained but ash.

But Noah was watching.

And I finally understood that he wasn't merely a witness to my war.

He was the reason I had to end it differently.

I lowered my weapon.

"I'm done," I said.

Silas blinked.

"What?"

"I said I'm done."

I stepped away from the case.

"The evidence is already with the prosecutor. The documents in that box are copies. Every payment, every message, every name is backed up somewhere your money can't reach."

Adrian's face changed.

"You wouldn't."

"I would."

"You'd destroy our family?"

I looked at Samuel and Noah.

"You already did."

A siren sounded outside.

Then another.

Silas cursed.

Adrian drew his pistol and turned toward Noah.

I lunged.

The shot struck a metal beam above us.

Vincent's team stormed through the doors as Silas disappeared into the darkness.

I slammed Adrian against the concrete floor.

For the first time in our lives, my brother looked genuinely afraid of me.

"Please," he whispered.

I pressed my knee against his chest.

"Twenty-five years, Adrian. That's how long I spent protecting you."

His eyes filled with tears.

"You're my brother."

I looked down at him.

"That was the one thing you should never have forgotten."

A deafening crash shook the mill.

The lights went out.

May you like

And from the darkness came Silas's voice.

"Everybody down!"
