Chapter 15 - Nathan returned to the penthouse before dawn. The office was still destroyed.

The leather chair remained in the center of the room.

His chair.

The chair his father had used.

The chair Arthur had wanted him to inherit.

Nathan stood before it.

Maggie entered behind him.

Lena followed.

Owen stayed by the door.

Nobody spoke.

Nathan held the final drive.

Everything was on it.

Every name.

Every payment.

Every murder.

Every betrayal.

Every lie.

And one final secret.

The person who owned Vale International.

Nathan inserted the drive into his computer.

A password screen appeared.

Lena stepped forward.

“Thomas used to tell me numbers mattered.”

She typed.

9-1-7.

The screen rejected it.

She tried again.

12-4-12.

Rejected.

Nathan thought for a moment.

Then he entered his mother's death date.

Access granted.

The screen opened.

Thousands of encrypted files appeared.

At the top was one folder.

FINAL SUCCESSION

Nathan opened it.

A contract appeared.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

His face slowly changed.

Maggie stepped closer.

“What is it?”

Nathan didn't answer.

Owen looked over his shoulder.

His face went white.

“What?”

Nathan turned the monitor.

The contract listed the controlling beneficiary of Vale International.

Not Marcus.

Not Arthur.

Not Nathan.

A name Nathan had never heard.

Then a photograph loaded.

Nathan stared.

It was a man sitting in a hospital bed.

Older.

Weak.

But unmistakable.

Nathan felt his chest tighten.

“That's impossible.”

Maggie looked at the screen.

“Who is that?”

Nathan whispered,

“My father.”

Owen shook his head.

“Marcus is dead.”

Nathan pointed.

“Not Marcus.”

The man in the photograph was Thomas Rowe.

Alive.

Older.

Scarred.

Sitting in a wheelchair.

Maggie stopped breathing.

“No.”

Nathan clicked the next file.

A video opened.

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, Maggie, then everything went according to plan.”

Maggie's eyes filled with tears.

Thomas continued.

“I couldn't contact you because Arthur was watching every move.”

Nathan leaned closer.

“You were the only person I could trust.”

Thomas paused.

Then looked directly into the camera.

“Nathan, you need to hear this.”

Nathan froze.

“You were not created to inherit my empire.”

Thomas smiled faintly.

“You were created to destroy it.”

Nathan looked at Maggie.

Thomas continued.

“Marcus raised you because he loved your mother. I stayed away because every person close to me became a target.”

A pause.

“Arthur believed he controlled the organization.”

Thomas shook his head.

“He never did.”

Nathan whispered,

“Then who did?”

Thomas looked into the camera.

“You.”

Nathan's eyes widened.

“Before I died, I transferred the controlling shares of Vale International into a trust under your name.”

“But I thought…”

Thomas continued.

“The organization cannot operate without you.”

Nathan understood.

All those years.

All the surveillance.

All the manipulation.

Every attack.

They had been waiting for one thing.

His signature.

His identity.

His consent.

Thomas had known.

He had built the final trap.

Nathan looked at the destroyed office.

At the chair.

The chair Arthur wanted him to sit in.

He suddenly understood the title everyone had been using.

The woman in his chair.

Maggie had been sitting there when he entered.

Not by accident.

Thomas's final message continued.

“Maggie, Nathan has to trust you.”

Nathan looked at her.

She lowered her head.

“I was there the night Thomas disappeared,” she whispered.

“You knew he survived?”

“Yes.”

“You've known?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Thomas made me promise.”

Nathan looked at the screen.

Thomas said,

“If Nathan learns the truth too early, he'll run.”

The video paused.

Then one final line appeared.

HE MUST CHOOSE THE CHAIR BEFORE HE CHOOSES THE TRUTH.

Nathan stepped toward the leather chair.

He touched the backrest.

For years, he had thought it belonged to his father.

Then to himself.

Now he understood.

It belonged to the person willing to end everything.

Nathan sat down.

Maggie watched him.

Lena stood beside her.

Owen lowered his weapon.

Nathan opened the final folder.

Inside was a list of instructions.

One sentence stood alone.

RELEASE THE BOOK AT 6:00 A.M.

Nathan checked the clock.

5:57.

He looked at Maggie.

“Once I do this, everyone comes after us.”

“Yes.”

“The company will collapse.”

“Yes.”

“People will go to prison.”

“Yes.”

“People will try to kill us.”

Maggie nodded.

“Yes.”

Nathan looked at the upload button.

5:59.

He placed his finger on the mouse.

Then a new message appeared on the screen.

UNKNOWN SENDER

Nathan opened it.

Three words.

THOMAS IS HERE.

A live video loaded.

Thomas sat in a dark room.

Alive.

Older.

Breathing.

And beside him stood a man Nathan recognized.

Owen.

Nathan slowly turned.

Owen was gone.

The elevator doors were open.

Maggie looked toward them.

“Where did he go?”

Nathan's phone rang.

Thomas's voice came through.

“Don't release the book.”

Nathan froze.

“Dad?”

A long silence.

Then Thomas whispered,

“Because everything Maggie told you was a lie.”

Nathan looked at Maggie.

She stood perfectly still.

Thomas continued.

“She didn't save you tonight.”

A pause.

“She brought you to me.”

Nathan's eyes widened.

“What are you saying?”

Thomas whispered the final words.

“She is the one who started the war.”

The line went dead.

Nathan looked at Maggie.

For the first time all night, she looked afraid.

The clock struck 6:00.

The upload began.

And somewhere beneath the city, thousands of locked doors opened at once.
