Chapter 7: The Grandfather's Hidden Truth

Nobody spoke.

Not for several seconds.

The rain outside continued falling against the glass window of the coffee shop, but inside, the silence felt heavier than the storm.

Richard Whitmore stood near the entrance.

A powerful man.

A man who carried himself like someone who was used to being obeyed.

His expensive coat was perfectly dry.

His expression was calm.

Almost too calm.

But Emma's reaction had changed everything.

"I've seen him before."

Those five words remained in everyone's mind.

Especially Catherine.

Because a mother remembered every detail about her child.

Every smile.

Every habit.

Every fear.

And Catherine knew something was wrong.

Emma wasn't looking at Richard like she was seeing a stranger.

She was looking at him like she was trying to remember a nightmare.

Catherine slowly turned toward her daughter.

"Emma..."

The little girl grabbed the edge of her old red scarf.

Her eyes never left Richard.

"Where did you see him?"

Emma didn't answer immediately.

Her breathing became shallow.

The billionaire father noticed.

He moved slightly closer.

Not touching her.

Just standing there.

A quiet reminder that she wasn't alone.

"Take your time."

Emma looked at him.

Then back at Richard.

"I don't know."

Richard smiled faintly.

"She's confused."

The billionaire father's eyes immediately moved toward him.

That sentence.

Again.

The same sentence.

Every time Emma said something dangerous, someone tried to explain it away.

The father stepped forward.

"She has been through trauma."

Richard looked at him.

"And you are?"

The man didn't like the question.

Not because it was rude.

Because it was a distraction.

"My name doesn't matter."

Richard smiled.

"Interesting."

The billionaire father remained calm.

"What matters is that a child is afraid."

Richard's expression changed slightly.

Only for a moment.

But enough.

He didn't like being challenged.

Catherine stared at Richard.

"Why are you here?"

Richard looked at her.

"Because I heard my granddaughter was found."

The word granddaughter sounded strange.

Almost rehearsed.

Catherine shook her head.

"You disappeared from our lives."

Richard's face remained cold.

"You left the family."

"I lost my daughter."

"And I lost my granddaughter."

Catherine's eyes narrowed.

"Don't pretend you were searching."

A silence followed.

A dangerous silence.

Because both of them knew there were things they weren't saying.

Daniel looked confused.

He quietly whispered to his father.

"Why are they angry at each other?"

The billionaire father didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

But he could feel it.

This wasn't just a missing child case.

It was a family war that had been buried for years.

Richard walked toward Emma.

Catherine immediately stepped forward.

"Stop."

Richard looked at her.

"I just want to see her."

Emma moved backward.

That was enough.

The billionaire father noticed.

"You should stop."

Richard looked at him.

"You don't understand family."

The father answered quietly.

"Maybe."

Then he looked at Emma.

"But I understand fear."

Richard's jaw tightened.

For the first time, his calm mask slipped.

Only slightly.

But everyone saw it.

Victor, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke.

"Richard."

Everyone turned.

Victor looked exhausted.

"You shouldn't have come."

Richard looked at him.

"Interesting."

His voice became colder.

"You are worried about what I might reveal?"

Victor's face changed.

The billionaire father immediately noticed.

There was history between them.

A lot of history.

"You two know each other."

Victor didn't answer.

Richard smiled.

"Of course we do."

He looked at Emma.

"Victor worked for my family."

Catherine's expression hardened.

"We know."

Richard continued.

"But what you don't know..."

He paused.

"...is why."

The room became silent.

The billionaire father crossed his arms.

"Explain."

Richard looked around the coffee shop.

At the birthday cake.

The balloons.

The candle.

A strange place for a family secret.

"Seven years ago, Emma disappeared because someone wanted her gone."

Catherine's face changed.

"Who?"

Richard looked at her.

"Someone inside this family."

The words hit everyone.

Victor immediately shook his head.

"No."

Richard ignored him.

"The night Emma vanished, there was a plan."

Catherine whispered:

"A plan?"

Richard nodded.

"Someone wanted control of the Whitmore fortune."

The billionaire father looked at Emma.

Then back at Richard.

"Are you saying someone kidnapped her for money?"

Richard's expression was serious.

"Yes."

Daniel looked frightened.

"Then why didn't you tell anyone?"

Richard became quiet.

That was the first time he looked uncertain.

Catherine noticed.

"Why?"

Richard looked away.

And that silence answered something.

The billionaire father stepped closer.

"You knew something."

Richard didn't deny it.

"I suspected."

Catherine stared at him.

"You suspected someone took my daughter..."

Her voice broke.

"And you said nothing?"

Richard looked at the floor.

For the first time, the powerful man looked old.

"I was trying to protect the family."

Catherine's eyes filled with anger.

"You protected a family name."

She pointed toward Emma.

"But you didn't protect her."

Nobody spoke.

Because she was right.

Richard had protected something.

But it wasn't Emma.

The billionaire father looked at Victor.

"And you?"

Victor remained silent.

"Why did you take her?"

Victor looked at Emma.

His expression became complicated.

"I didn't take her."

Catherine laughed bitterly.

"Then explain."

Victor closed his eyes.

Then slowly said:

"That night, I received a message."

The room became still.

"A message telling me Emma was in danger."

"From who?"

Victor hesitated.

Then looked at Richard.

Everyone followed his eyes.

Richard's face remained calm.

But his silence was loud.

The billionaire father understood.

The accusation was not small.

Victor continued.

"I was told if I didn't get Emma away immediately..."

He looked at the little girl.

"...she would disappear forever."

Catherine froze.

Daniel looked at Emma.

The little girl stood completely still.

Trying to understand a story about herself.

A story she had never been allowed to know.

The billionaire father turned toward Richard.

"Was it you?"

Richard didn't answer.

The silence lasted too long.

Then suddenly...

A phone vibrated.

Everyone looked.

It came from Richard's pocket.

He checked the screen.

And for the first time...

The powerful grandfather looked terrified.

The billionaire father noticed.

"What is it?"

Richard didn't respond.

He slowly turned the phone around.

On the screen was a message.

Only four words.

But they changed the entire situation.

"She remembers everything now."

Emma looked at the phone.

Then whispered:

"No..."

Everyone turned.

The billionaire father crouched beside her.

"What is it?"

Emma stared at Richard.

Her face became pale.

Because she recognized the meaning behind those words.

She had seen them before.

Not the message.

The handwriting.

The same handwriting that appeared on the notes Victor gave her when she was little.

The same handwriting from the person who controlled her life for seven years.

Emma whispered:

"He's still here."

The billionaire father looked around the coffee shop.

"Who?"

Emma slowly raised her hand.

And pointed toward the window.

Everyone followed her finger.

Outside, across the street...

Someone was standing beneath an umbrella.

Watching.

Waiting.

And Emma knew that face.

May you like

Because it was the face from her nightmares.

The person who started everything.
