Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO CAME HOME EARLYThe first thing Luca Ferraro did after ordering Charles Harland off the property was stand completely still.

The mansion seemed to hold its breath with him.

Rain whispered against the tall windows of the main corridor. Somewhere upstairs, an antique clock ticked with the relentless patience of a predator. The servants had gone silent. Even the security team seemed afraid to make a sound.

Luca looked down at his hands.

One still smelled faintly of bleach.

The other had dried blood on the knuckles.

Not his blood.

Nora’s red little fingers were what he kept seeing.

Three years old.

Standing on a stool.

Washing a grown man’s shirt.

Why?

Because somebody had convinced her that if she did not work, her mother would lose everything.

Luca had spent twenty-six years building an empire that made ministers lower their voices and billionaires check their phones twice before saying no to him.

Yet a three-year-old had walked through every wall he had built.

“Mr. Ferraro?”

He turned.

His head of security, Matteo Rizzo, stood at the entrance.

“Doctor Klein is with Elena. He says the antibiotics should stabilize her.”

“And Nora?”

“She fell asleep beside her mother.”

“Good.”

Matteo hesitated.

“There’s something else.”

Luca’s eyes sharpened.

“What?”

“The laundry room.”

Luca waited.

“We checked the security cameras.”

“And?”

Matteo swallowed.

“They were disabled.”

“For how long?”

“Thirty-seven minutes.”

Luca’s expression changed.

“When?”

“Between 8:12 and 8:49 this morning.”

The same period Nora had been in the laundry room.

Luca stared toward the corridor.

“Who disabled them?”

“We're tracing it.”

“No.”

Matteo blinked.

“I'll trace it myself.”

Luca walked toward the security office.

His mansion had twelve exterior cameras, nine interior cameras, motion sensors, biometric access points and a private surveillance system so sophisticated that most governments would have considered it excessive.

Nobody simply turned off one camera.

Not without authorization.

The security office door opened.

Three monitors filled the dark room with blue light.

Matteo pulled up the access log.

“Someone used an executive override.”

Luca stopped.

“Whose?”

Matteo turned the screen.

A single name appeared.

CHARLES HARLAND.

Luca stared at it.

“Call him.”

“He isn't answering.”

“He will.”

Matteo nodded.

Luca reached for the monitor.

“Wait.”

A tiny movement appeared in the corner of the footage.

The camera had not been completely disabled.

Someone had forgotten the hallway feed.

A figure crossed the corridor.

Tall.

Male.

He stopped outside Elena’s apartment.

Then he looked directly toward the camera.

Luca leaned closer.

The image was blurred.

But he recognized the posture.

Harland.

The figure raised one hand.

It looked like he was holding a key.

Then he entered Elena’s apartment.

Luca's face went cold.

“When was this?”

“Yesterday. 11:43 p.m.”

Luca looked at Matteo.

“Who gave Harland permission to enter her room?”

“No one.”

“Who let him have a key?”

“We'll find out.”

“No.”

Luca's voice was quiet now.

“That’s not the question.”

Matteo waited.

“The question is why a man who has worked for me for eleven years thought he was allowed to walk into a sick woman's apartment at midnight.”

Before Matteo could answer, the elevator bell rang.

A maid stepped into the hall.

“Mr. Ferraro?”

“What?”

“There’s a package.”

“For me?”

“No. For Miss Vega.”

Luca frowned.

“Where did it come from?”

“The front gate. No return address.”

“Bring it here.”

The maid obeyed.

It was a small brown envelope.

No stamp.

No courier label.

Only Elena Vega’s name handwritten across the front.

Luca opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

He looked at it.

Then his stomach tightened.

The photograph showed Elena.

Younger.

Much younger.

She stood beside a man Luca knew better than almost anyone.

His older brother.

Adrian Ferraro.

Luca’s dead brother.

The official story was that Adrian had disappeared twelve years ago after betraying the family.

No body.

No explanation.

Just a trail of rumors and a final bank transfer.

But Elena wasn't alone in the photograph.

A newborn baby was in Adrian's arms.

Luca turned the photograph over.

Three words were written on the back.

SHE KNOWS WHY.

Luca looked toward Elena's apartment.

For the first time that day, he felt something colder than anger.

Fear.

Because Adrian had never mentioned Elena.

And Luca knew exactly one thing about his brother.

Adrian never kept harmless secrets.

He kept dangerous ones.

Very dangerous ones.

Luca slipped the photograph into his coat.

“Matteo.”

“Yes?”

“Lock down the estate.”

“Already done.”

“No visitors. No deliveries. Nobody leaves without my permission.”

Matteo nodded.

“And Harland?”

Luca looked toward the rain-streaked window.

“Find him.”

“And if he refuses?”

Luca's eyes went dark.

“Then find him before he knows we're looking.”

Upstairs, Nora woke from her sleep.

She sat beside her feverish mother and whispered to the empty room.

“Mama…”

Elena opened her eyes.

“What is it, sweetheart?”

Nora pointed toward the door.

“There was a man.”

Elena's face changed.

“What man?”

“The man who told me to wash the shirt.”

A pause.

May you like

Then Nora whispered the one sentence that made Elena go completely pale.

“He said Uncle Luca wasn't supposed to come home.”
