Chapter 1 - Matteo De Luca had spent twenty-seven years convincing himself that the dead stayed dead.It was the only rule a man like him could afford to believe.

Dead men did not knock on restaurant doors.

Dead men did not send photographs.

Dead men certainly did not stand beside the woman Matteo had loved most in his life.

Yet there they were.

Sofia Marino stood behind the locked glass entrance of Bellavita, rain sliding down the window behind her. Her hair was darker than Matteo remembered, streaked with silver now, her face thinner, older, harder.

But it was Sofia.

There was no mistaking her.

And beside her stood the man Matteo had buried beneath six feet of stone in a remote cemetery outside Palermo.

Matteo's right hand slowly curled into a fist.

The restaurant had become a frozen theater.

Every waiter stood motionless.

Every guest stared toward the entrance.

Two of Matteo's men immediately moved toward the door, but Matteo lifted one finger.

“Don't.”

They stopped.

Elena Marino looked at her mother as if the world had just split beneath her feet.

“Mom?”

Sofia pressed one hand against the glass.

“Don't let him come near you.”

Elena looked confused.

“Who?”

Sofia's eyes shifted toward Matteo.

“You know exactly who.”

Matteo walked toward the entrance.

He moved slowly.

Not because he was afraid.

Because twenty-seven years of memories were waking up inside his chest one by one.

Sofia.

A summer night.

A hidden apartment.

A promise.

A gunshot.

A funeral.

And Marco Bellini.

The man standing beside Sofia.

Marco had been Matteo's closest friend.

His brother in everything but blood.

Twenty-seven years earlier, Marco had allegedly betrayed Matteo's family, stolen millions, murdered three men, and then attempted to kill Matteo himself.

Matteo had found him after a car exploded on a mountain road.

Only a charred body had remained.

The ring had been recovered from the ashes.

A black stone surrounded by silver.

Matteo had buried Marco himself.

Or what he believed was Marco.

Now that same ring rested on the hand of a living man.

Matteo stopped three feet from the glass.

He looked directly at Marco.

“Take off the ring.”

Marco smiled.

“Still giving orders.”

His voice was deeper than Matteo remembered.

But it was him.

There was no doubt.

Matteo unlocked the door.

Sofia grabbed Marco's arm.

“No.”

Marco gently pulled free.

“It's time.”

The door opened.

Cold rain air entered the restaurant.

Sofia stepped inside first.

She looked at Elena.

Then Matteo.

Her eyes filled with something that looked almost like regret.

“Elena,” she whispered.

Elena moved toward her.

“You're alive.”

Sofia nodded.

“I am.”

“You told me she died.”

Matteo's voice was quiet.

Sofia looked at him.

“I had to.”

“Why?”

“Because they were looking for her.”

“Who?”

Sofia's silence lasted only a second.

Then she answered.

“The same people who are looking for you now.”

Before Matteo could respond, every light in Bellavita went out.

The restaurant plunged into darkness.

Someone screamed.

A chair crashed.

Matteo instantly grabbed Elena and pulled her behind him.

“Everyone down!”

Three gunshots shattered the windows.

Glass exploded inward.

Matteo's men drew their weapons.

Guests dropped to the floor.

Another shot cracked through the darkness.

Then silence.

Emergency lights flickered on.

Matteo looked toward the entrance.

Sofia was gone.

Marco was gone.

So was Elena's phone.

Matteo turned sharply.

“Elena?”

No answer.

He searched the room.

Nothing.

Then his personal phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

A photograph appeared.

Elena was sitting in a dark room.

Her hands were tied behind her back.

Her face was terrified.

And standing behind her was a man wearing a black stone ring.

Another message appeared.

YOU FOUND THE GIRL. NOW FIND HER FATHER.

Matteo stared at the screen.

His blood went cold.

Because he already knew something the kidnapper didn't.

Elena's father was not supposed to be alive.

And if that man was Marco Bellini...

Then Matteo had spent twenty-seven years burying the wrong body.
