Chapter 14 - THE TRUTH BENEATH THE HOUSENobody moved.

My former husband looked at me as though we had simply bumped into each other at a grocery store.
“It's been a while.”
I couldn't speak.
Reyes aimed his gun.
“Hands where I can see them.”
He obeyed.
Slowly.
“I knew you'd find the house.”
“How?”
“Because I knew Michael would eventually tell you.”
Michael stepped forward.
“You framed me.”
“Yes.”
“You killed my team.”
“No.”
“You let everyone believe I was dead.”
“Yes.”
His calmness frightened me more than anger would have.
I stared at him.
“Did you hurt those children?”
His face changed.
“No.”
“At all?”
“No.”
“Then why did you build the network?”
He looked at me.
“Because the network existed before I ever touched it.”
He explained.
Years earlier, corporations, private security firms, and corrupt contractors had created a system for gathering sensitive information through schools.
He infiltrated the system to expose it.
Then he discovered the truth.
Some people were using it to blackmail families.
He tried to steal the records.
The organization retaliated.
His partner was killed.
Atlas witnessed the murder.
Michael helped him hide the evidence.
But someone betrayed them.
Mercer.
Holloway.
And eventually Hale.
“Then why did you let me believe you were gone?” I asked.
“Because I knew they would use you.”
He looked at Lily.
“And they did.”
Michael shook his head.
“You left her without protection.”
“I had Atlas.”
I looked at the dog.
My former husband approached carefully.
Atlas growled.
He stopped.
“He remembers.”
“Everything?”
“Enough.”
Then the house lights turned on.
Every room lit simultaneously.
A dozen hidden cameras activated.
The walls shifted.
A section beneath the staircase opened.
Inside was a room filled with equipment.
Monitors.
Records.
Photographs.
Every school.
Every child.
Every person connected to the case.
My former husband walked inside.
“This is the original control room.”
Reyes looked around.
“How many people knew?”
“Too many.”
“Where's Hale?”
He smiled.
“Not here.”
“Mercer?”
“Betrayed him.”
“Mrs. Holloway?”
“Arrested.”
“Then who is still operating the network?”
He looked at me.
“No one.”
I didn't believe him.
Then every monitor changed.
A live feed appeared.
A warehouse.
Hale stood in the center.
He held a remote.
Beside him was a gasoline can.
And Lily's classroom artwork.
My former husband went pale.
“Hale found the last archive.”
“What does he want?”
“The ledger.”
“He has one.”
“Not the original.”
He looked at me.
“The original is inside Atlas's collar.”
I touched Bear's neck.
The metal ring.
I suddenly remembered.
Unit 47.
The collar had never been ordinary.
It contained a tiny encrypted storage device.
Hale wanted it.
We didn't have time.
The warehouse location appeared on the screen.
Reyes ordered his team out.
We reached the building thirty minutes later.
Smoke poured from the roof.
Hale had already started the fire.
Inside, we found shelves of records.
Burning.
Melting.
Disappearing.
Lily screamed.
“Dad!”
Michael had spotted Hale across the warehouse.
Hale was holding Atlas.
The dog struggled.
A metal clamp was locked around his collar.
Hale smiled.
“Come any closer and I remove the device permanently.”
Michael raised his hands.
“Let him go.”
“Give me the ledger.”
My former husband stepped forward.
“I'll trade.”
Hale laughed.
“You don't get to negotiate anymore.”
Then the sprinklers activated.
Water crashed down.
Hale fired.
Chaos erupted.
I grabbed Lily.
Reyes rushed forward.
Michael ran toward Atlas.
Bear bit through the restraint.
The collar broke.
The device dropped.
Hale lunged.
So did Bear.
The dog collided with him.
Hale fell.
The device slid across the wet floor.
I reached it first.
I looked down.
The tiny drive was blinking.
One final file appeared.
SATURDAY_0001
I opened it.
The screen displayed a single photograph.
A warehouse.
My former husband.
Hale.
Mercer.
And one fourth man.
May you like
The fourth man was wearing a teacher's badge.
It belonged to Mr. Davis.
