Chapter 6 - The BlanketI hadn't noticed the open zipper because I'd been struggling with Leo and arguing over the seat.

The realization filled me with a sick, helpless rage.

“He touched our bag,” I whispered.

Denise asked the man to explain why he possessed an item belonging to my son.

He held up both hands.

“Someone gave it to me.”

“Who?”

He glanced at Victoria.

She began sobbing.

“He told me the baby would be returned safely. He said the mother had signed an agreement.”

“I never signed anything!” I shouted.

Leo startled at my voice, and I immediately lowered it.

“I never agreed to anything. He's my son.”

The man shook his head.

“This family doesn't know the full story.”

“Then tell it,” Denise replied.

He looked around the cabin, measuring the faces watching him.

Then he said something that made the blood drain from my face.

“Your husband knows.”

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

“My husband?”

“David Bennett.”

My husband was hundreds of miles away, working on a construction project in another state.

He had spoken to us that morning. He'd reminded Maya to behave on the plane and told me to call when we landed.

“David has nothing to do with this,” I said.

The man's expression remained calm.

“Ask him why he changed the baby's hospital records.”

I felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath me.

Leo had been born six weeks earlier. His birth had been difficult, and he'd spent his first two nights under observation. David had been there for the delivery, but he left shortly afterward to return to work.

I'd handled most of the hospital paperwork alone.

Was there something I hadn't seen?

Something David had signed?

I reached for my phone.

Denise gently stopped me.

“Please wait until we can secure the situation.”

The man watched us with a faint smile.

“Go ahead. Call him.”

May you like

Then he leaned toward me and lowered his voice.

“Ask him why your son was never supposed to leave that hospital alive.”
