Chapter 7 - The Passenger Who Never ExistedI drove back to Chicago with the photograph resting on the passenger seat.

The city blurred past the windows. Snow gathered along the sidewalks, covering the bloodstains from old violence and the footprints of people who would never know how close they had come to danger.

Caleb sat beside me, reading a report on his phone.

"Bell's new identity checks out," he said. "Nathan Cole has been employed at the nursing home for five months. He hasn't left the facility since last Friday."

"Then he'll be easy to find."

"Not necessarily. The nursing home is owned by a company registered to a trust. The trust's beneficiaries include three people connected to Dante."

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

"Of course they do."

"There's also the passenger Margaret mentioned. I checked the accident report from four years ago. The vehicle was registered to Elena, but the police report lists only one occupant."

"What about the hospital records?"

"Same thing. Only Elena's name appears."

I glanced at the photograph.

"Then someone disappeared from the official story."

When we reached the estate, Nora was waiting in the study.

She stood beside the fireplace, her face pale with worry. A small suitcase sat on the floor.

"What's that?" I asked.

"I'm leaving."

"No."

Her chin lifted.

"You can't order me to stay."

"I can order you to stay on this property while someone is trying to murder your daughter. And unless you'd prefer to explain to Maisie why her mother vanished, I suggest you sit down."

Her eyes flashed.

"Don't you dare use her against me."

I immediately regretted the words.

Nora had protected that child for four years. She had carried her through illnesses, nightmares, birthdays, and questions about a father who might never come looking for her.

I had arrived late to every important moment in their lives.

I lowered my voice.

"I'm not trying to control you. I'm trying to keep you safe."

She studied me for a long time.

Then she sat.

I placed the photograph of Elena and Dante on the desk.

"Do you recognize this?"

Nora stared at it.

Her breath caught.

"Where did you get that?"

"From a woman who has been paying Dr. Bell."

Nora covered her mouth.

"Then Victor is alive."

"You know him?"

"He helped Elena deliver Maisie."

The room seemed to stop.

Nora took a shaky breath.

"Elena was terrified that Dante would learn about the evidence she had collected. She asked Victor to help her arrange a safe meeting. He was supposed to take her and the baby somewhere outside Chicago."

"Maisie was a newborn."

Nora nodded.

"Elena wanted to disappear until she could expose your brother. She believed Dante would leave her alone if he thought the baby had died."

"What happened?"

"The car crashed before they reached the meeting place. I was waiting at a second location when Victor called me. He said Elena was dead, but the baby had survived. He told me Dante was coming to the hospital and that I had to take Maisie immediately."

I looked at the photograph.

"You knew Elena intended to disappear?"

"I knew she wanted to protect her daughter. I thought she was dead. I believed Victor when he told me."

"And you never checked?"

Nora's expression crumpled.

"I searched for her for months. I contacted every hospital, every morgue, every person who might have known something. No one had seen her. Eventually, I accepted that she was gone."

She wiped her face.

"I didn't steal your daughter for money, Mr. Marchetti. I kept her because someone had to love her while the people who wanted her dead searched for her."

The words landed harder than a punch.

For a long time, I couldn't speak.

Then a small voice came from the hallway.

"Mommy?"

Maisie stood in the doorway, holding a stuffed rabbit.

She looked at Nora.

Then at me.

"Are you my daddy?"

Nora froze.

I felt every answer I had ever prepared for a difficult question disappear.

I knelt in front of her.

"I think I might be."

She considered that.

"Then why didn't you come to my birthday?"

I looked away.

There are questions a man can answer with money, power, or violence.

That wasn't one of them.

Before I could respond, Maisie held out the rabbit.

"That's okay," she whispered. "You can come to the next one."

She walked back toward the nursery.

I remained on my knees long after she disappeared.

Then Caleb's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds before looking at me.

"Gabriel, we found Dr. Bell."

"Where?"

Caleb's face hardened.

"Dead."

He paused.

"His body was discovered this morning. There's a message carved into the door of his apartment."

"What message?"

May you like

Caleb looked toward the hallway where Maisie had vanished.

THE NEXT BODY WILL BE YOUR DAUGHTER'S.
