Chapter 11 - ElenaThe woman introduced herself as Elena Vassari.

She did not mention Belucchi.
She did not need to.
Dante could feel the history in the room.
She sat opposite him while armed men appeared behind the walls.
Not guards.
Professionals.
Quiet.
Disciplined.
Nico was outside.
Matteo was somewhere in the city.
Isabella was hidden with the children.
For the first time, Dante was alone.
"You arranged everything."
Elena smiled.
"Not everything."
"Sophia."
"Alive."
"My father."
"Dead."
"Matteo."
"Alive."
"Me."
Elena leaned back.
"You were always the difficult one."
Dante hated that sentence.
"Why me?"
"Because Enzo loved you."
"That was his weakness?"
"No."
"It was yours."
Elena smiled.
"Maybe."
Dante pushed the ledger across the table.
"What is this?"
"History."
"Children."
"Assets."
"They're children."
"To you."
Dante's voice hardened.
"You treated them like property."
Elena didn't flinch.
"The world treated them worse."
"That's your excuse?"
"No."
She touched the ledger.
"It's the truth."
Dante stared at her.
"You created Project Crown."
"I funded it."
"Why?"
"To preserve certain bloodlines."
"For what?"
"Control."
The answer was so simple it frightened him.
"Why Lily?"
"Because her blood is valuable."
"How?"
"Her father."
Dante froze.
"Not me."
"No."
Elena smiled.
"Someone else."
Dante stared.
"Who?"
"You'll find out in the ledger."
He opened it.
A coded page.
One symbol.
A crown.
Next to it:
PATERNAL LINE: UNKNOWN
Dante looked up.
"You don't know who Lily's father is."
Elena smiled.
"We know."
"Then say it."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because you will not believe me."
Dante stood.
"Try me."
Elena motioned to the wall.
A screen appeared.
Video.
Sophia giving birth.
Then a man entering the room.
Dante stared.
The man was young.
Dark hair.
Same eyes as Lily.
Dante knew him.
Everyone in the city knew him.
He had been dead for eight years.
Matteo's son.
Marco Belucchi.
Dante's cousin.
The heir who supposedly died in a warehouse fire.
Dante sat down.
"Marco was Lily's father."
"Yes."
"Then Sophia was..."
"His protection officer."
Dante shook his head.
"No."
Elena nodded.
"She loved him."
The video changed.
Marco and Sophia together.
Lily as a baby.
Marco holding her.
Then Marco handing the baby to Isabella.
Isabella crying.
Marco saying something.
The audio was weak.
Dante increased the volume.
Marco's voice became clear.
"She cannot grow up here."
Sophia answered:
"Then where?"
Marco looked toward the camera.
"With Dante."
Dante's face went blank.
His cousin had planned for him to raise Lily.
Without telling him.
Why?
The video continued.
Marco looked terrified.
He said:
"Elena will never stop."
Dante turned toward the older woman.
"You killed him."
Elena shook her head.
"Gabriel did."
"And my father?"
"Enzo tried to expose the program."
Dante looked at the ledger.
"The fire."
"Yes."
"The truck."
"Yes."
"Sophia's husband."
"Yes."
"The driver."
"Yes."
Dante felt rage build.
All the deaths.
All the fires.
All the missing people.
One structure.
One machine.
One family.
He looked at Elena.
"Why am I alive?"
She smiled.
"Because you were the key."
"What key?"
"You were the only child who survived the memory protocol."
Dante's hands tightened.
"What memory protocol?"
Elena stood.
"The part your mother warned you about."
"My mother is dead."
"No."
Dante's eyes lifted.
Elena smiled.
"Lucia lied to you."
The lights flickered.
A gunshot sounded outside.
Then another.
Nico shouted through a speaker:
"Dante, get down!"
The library doors blew inward.
Smoke filled the room.
Dante dropped behind the table.
Elena disappeared through a hidden passage.
He grabbed the ledger.
A man rushed through the smoke.
Dante fired.
The man fell.
Silence.
Then a voice behind him.
"You're going to hate me."
Dante turned.
Lucia stood there.
Holding a bloody knife.
May you like
She whispered:
"I killed your father."
